PHONEMIC AWARENESS

~The knowledge that words are made up of a combination of individual sounds .~Although there are 26 letters in the English language, there are approximately 40 phonemes, or sound units, in the English language.~See handout for list of phonemes, their spellings and examples

EXAMPLES OF PHONEMIC AWARENESS SKILLS

~Blending: What word am I trying to say? Mmmmm...oooooo...p.~Segmentation (first sound isolation): What is the first sound in mop? /m/~Segmentation (last sound isolation): What is the last sound in mop? /p/~Segmentation (complete): What are all the sounds you hear in mop? /m/ /o/ /p/

STRATEGIES FOR TRICKY WORDS

*Phonics is used when a reader comes across an unknown word (tricky word handout)~Look at the pictures~Get your lips ready to make the first sounds~Stretch it out~Chunk the word~Skip it, come back~Flip the vowel (short/long sounds)~Try it again~Ask for help

READING WITH FLUENCY

~Expression- do not sound like a robot~Rate- don’t read too fast. Don’t read too slow~Accuracy- read the right words~Punctuation-

COMPREHENSION

~Comprehension is the ability to make meaning from what the text says both explicitly and implicitly.~ The goal of comprehension instruction is to teach children specific strategies to use for understanding text as they read.

BUILDING STAMINA

~ Allow children to read BOTH; books on their reading level as well as books that interest them~Create a comfy reading space in your home~Interactive stories and books on the computer~Be good role models~Make reading a part of family time~Set a timer and keep track of progress
