Alphabet Memory Purpose: The purpose of Alphabet Memory is to help Kindergarten students become comfortable associating upper case letters with their matching lower case letters. Students a lso have to say the sound the letter makes when they pick up a card, which reinforces letter-sound recognition. By having students do bo th, matching the letters and saying their corresponding sounds, they are practicing their automaticity skills with letter and sound rec ognition. When students are able to automatically recognize the letter and its sound, it helps them become a more fluent reader, which in turn leads to b etter comprehension. Material List:  Gallon Ziploc Bag  Alphabet Cards  Printed Directions Overall Description: At this center students will be working on their reco gnition of upper and lower case letter partnerships, while also saying the letter sounds. Alphabet Memory is a typical memory game in that all of the cards will be placed face down. Students will take turns flipping over two cards (one card at a time). The student must say the sound the letter makes before flipping over the next card. If the cards are not an upper/lower case mat ch, the student will flip the cards back over and his/her turn is up. If the cards are a match, the student must say the correct letter sound to take the pair of cards. When a student gets a match, his/her turn continues until a match is not gotten. Students will take turns until all of the cards are gone, with the winner being the person who has the most cards. This game can be played with 2-3 students. Student Directions: 1. Take the cards out of the bag. 2. Place the cards in rows, with the letters facing the ground. 3. The person who has the next birthday will go first. 4. Flip over one card, say the letter sound.
