Litchfield RESCUE REVIEWFirefighters Make Quick Work Of Mike Lane Blaze

A fire in a split level home at 15 Mike Lane on May 10th, was quickly knocked down by the first arriving crews. Hudson Fire Alarm received several calls reporting the fire at 19:##. All Litchfield companies were toned to the scene.

Deputy Chief Travis arrived on the scene and reported heavy smoke showing and a short time later reported heavy fire on sides A and B and assumed command of the scene. A working fire was struck bringing mutual aid to the scene.

Engine 4 was the first company to arrive and the crews stretched a line into the front door of the home. Heavy smoke poured from the eves as crews entered. Tanker 3 was the company to arrive and stretched a supply line to Engine 4.

Crews faced heavy flames and high heat as they worked to knockdown the flames. Engine 1 arrived on the scene and were directed to stretch a backup line into the building. Firefighters had the flames under control in a short time with extensive overhaul needed in the interior of the home.

Heavy smoke continued to come from the roof of the home and Londonderry crews were assigned to place a ladder to the attic vent to check to see in the fire had extended into the attic. A Bedford tanker staged for further water supply.

Blaze continued from page 1

Chief Fraitzl arrived on scene and assisted with operations of the scene. Firefighters worked for some time to open up the exterior walls on the home and removed sheet rock from the interior walls to check for any flames still burning in the walls. The attic vents were removed and no extension was found in the attic. The fire was placed under control at 20:###

A Derry engine was assigned as the RIT Team with a Hudson ambulance assigned to the medical sector. Firefighters from Merrimack and Hudson covered the Litchfield Station during the fire.

Litchfield and Londonderry firefighters open up and overhaul the exterior walls of the home. Litchfield Marine 1 Assists With Boat

Recovery At 13:33, Hudson requested Marine 1 to assist with the recovery of a abandoned boat on the Merrimack River on May 13th. Hudson firefighters found the boat washed up onto a group of rocks and determined more help would be needed to remove the boat.

Crews quickly determined the boat was abandoned and to be located on the Nashua side of the river and nashua Fire was called to the scene. Marine 1 picked up a Nashua firefighter at the Nashua Boat Ramp and transported to the scene to evaluated conditions. A Hudson marine unit setup down river as a safety unit with a Nashua marine unit transported two firefighters in water rescue suits to to the scene to pull the boat o the rocks.

The boat was pulled into the open river and a tow line was hooked to the Litchfield Marine Unit to tow the boat to the boat ramp. Due to the current and the boat being flooded crews determined that the risk was to great and towed the boat to a safe area on shore and called New Hampshire Fish and Game to handle the removal.

Tanker 3 Responds To Merrimack Second Alarm Tanker 3 responded to the Town of Merrimack on May 15th, to assist firefighters knockdown a 2 alarm fire. Merrimack firefighters received numerous calls reporting the fire just before 20:00. On their arrival they found a large single family home heavily involved and struck a second alarm. Tanker 3 and Chief Fraitzl were toned to the 37 Greatstone Drive scene at 20:14.

As heavy fire took over the home the firefighters backed out and set up a defensive attack. Tanker 3 was one of several tankers called to the scene to supply water to crews battling the flames.

The fire consumed the hone with the blaze placed under control at 22:22 with Litchfield crews remaining on the scene for some time assisting.

Nashua firefighters cut a vent hole in the roof of 30 Canal Street on May 17th, after flames broke out in the large apartment building. Two alarms were needed to control the fire.

Crews Respond To Bedford Brush Fire On May 27th, at 17:38 Hudson Fire Alarm toned Forestry 1 and Car 1 with additional manpower to Iron Horse Drive in Bedford to assist battling a 2 alarm brush fire. Bedfords fire was one of four large brush fires along the railroad tracks sparked by a passing train.

Due to the area the fire was in hand tools and long hose lines stretchers were needed to control the fire. Firefighters from across the area responded mutual aid to the fire in Bedford, Merrimack and 2 in Manchester.

Firefighters in Lowell Mass struck 2 alarms with special calls to bring this fire in a large commercial building under control on May 10th.

Engine 4 Responds To Hudson 2nd, Alarm Blaze Two alarms were struck on May 7th, after flames broke out at 21 Glasgow Circle in Hudson. On arrival of Hudson crews found a 1 1/2 story single family home heavy involved and struck a second alarm. Toned on the second alarm were crews from

Litchfield, Nashua, Londonderry, Windham, Derry and Pelham to the scene. At 08:56 engine 4 with a crew of Captain Nicoll and Firefighters C Schofield and Miller were called to the scene.

Two AMR ambulances from Nashua were called to the scene to treat and transport several patients. One occupant was transported from the scene suering injuries related to the fire. A second occupant was treated on the scene. A neighbor who entered the building to assist the occupants was also transported for injuries.

Heavy fire burned through the roof and all crews were removed from the building. Nashua Engine 4 used its deck gun to hit the heavy fire in the front of the building while master streams operated on side 2 and 3 hitting the fire.

The large streams quickly darkened down the flames and crews reentered the building. Numerous hose lines were stretched into the building. Windham and Londonderry crews were assigned to relieve first in crews, with the Nashua ladder and Derry crew assigned to opening up. Litchfield was assigned as RIT with the Pelham crew staging a short time and sent to cover Station 1. The fire was placed under control at 09:28 with crews performing overhaul and hitting hots spots for another hour.

Nashua firefighters struck 5 alarms for this blaze involving two buildings on west Hollis Street on June 8th.

LFD participated in the Memorial Day Parade on May 25th.

Times Past This month we go back to February 3, 1957, to cover a building fire on Page Road. The owner of the 3 room cottage was washing dishes in his home a short distance away about noon time and spotted heavy smoke coming from the building. Knowing his two children play inside the vacant building he rushed outside.

Not finding his children and fearing the worst he kicked in the locked door feeding the fire with fresh air. The flames intensified burning the man. He tried to enter the building but was driven back by the flames. His wife suered a severe cut to her arm after breaking a window trying to enter the building. Her mother n law suered a broken leg while running to assist the bleeding children's mother.

Litchfield firefighters arrived on the scene finding the building heavily involved and requested Hudson firefighters for assistance. As crews worked to contain the flames the building became fully involved and collapsed.

As firefighters battled the flames the family and firefighters thought for sure the children had perished in the blaze. As firefighter searched the collapsed remains for the children the father noticed foot prints in the snow leading away from the building. The father followed the prints finding the children hiding in the woods thinking they were in trouble.

The building and the stored contents were totally destroyed.

Firefighters Participate In Swift Water Training Litchfield Firefighters Kimball, Rea, and Miller participated in a Swift Water Rescue Course that was held along the Merrimack River in Bedford on May 16. The intense training taught the firefighters how to perform rescues of victims caught in the fast-moving currents and how to self rescue if needed.

The courses participants also reviewed the use in dierent types of equipment needed for this type of rescue and then jumped into the cold Merrimack River in an area covered with fast-moving rapids putting their new learned skills to use. This training will be a great benefit to the residence of Litchfield if the need ever arises for this type of rescue.

Overheated Saw Requires Evacuation Of Campbell High

A box alarm followed by a phone call reporting smoke in the building on June 15th, required the evacuation of Campbell High School. Just after 10 AM Hudson Fire Alarm toned all Litchfield companies to the 1 Highlander Court scene for

smoke in the wood shop area. While companies were responding additional calls were received and a second alarm was struck to ensure needed resources were available for the safety of the occupants of the school.

On arrival Engine 4 confirmed smoke in the building and begin the search to find the source. Additional arriving companies took a hydrant for water supply and assisted in the building. It took some time for firefighters to determine the sources of the smoke. crews found an overheated saw in the workshop area causing the smoke condition. Firefighters worked another half hour to clear smoke out from the building so the students could return to their classrooms.

Mutual aid companies from Hudson, Londonderry and Bedford responded on the second alarm to the school. These companies staged and were returned shortly after arrival.

Tanker 3 Called To Windham Second Alarm Windham firefighters requested assistance on May 24th, to bring a two alarm fire under control. Hudson Fire Alarm toned Tanker 3 to the 63 Blossom Road scene at 15:43.

On arrival of Windham crews they found and outside fire spread into the homes attic. Heavy fire took hold in the attic and a second was struck.

Tanker 3 staged in the case the attack engine was in need of water supply as firefighters performed overhaul on floor 2 of the large 2 1/2 story single family home.

Firefighters from Litchfield, Hudson, Pelham, Derry, Londonderry Auburn and Hampstead responded to the scene to assist Windham.

This is the scene on May 24, during a 2 alarm fire at 63 Blossom Road in Windham.

One Person Injured After Crash A single vehicle crash at the intersection Charles Bancroft Highway and Corning Road on June 30th, sent one person to the hospital. Litchfield Engine 4, Rescue 1, Car 1 and a Hudson ambulance responded to the scene and found a vehicle o the road into the woods with a patient in the car.

Crews quickly evaluated the patient's condition and packaged the patient for transport to a local hospital. Crews remained on the scene for about one hour until the vehicle could be removed from the woods.

Litchfield and Hudson firefighters package the injured driver after a vehicle crashed into the woods of the Charles Bancroft Highway.

Litchfield Firefighter association members Warren Adams and Jim Rea presented Bethany Newell the LFA Scholarship at the Campbell High Graduation on June 17th.
