Good readers apply comprehension strategies as they read to better understandwhat they are reading. Annotating a book while you are reading allows you tokeep track of your thinking as you read and share it with others. Your focus willbe on making connections to the text, visualizing what is happening, determiningthe most important parts, and asking yourself questions.

You should have at least 4 completed sticky notes for each week’s

reading. You are welcome to do more. You must also create two “thick”questions with answers to share with your group members.

Sticky Notes To create the sticky note, you can use the following sentence starters to lead yourthinking:

• “That reminds me of…”

• “I have connection to…”

• “I remember when…”

“I wonder why…”• ‘Why….”

• “I’m confused by…”

• “This is really important because…”

• “I think this means…”

• “I predict….”

Every sticky note must have a page # and a completed sentence starter. Leavethe sticky notes in your book.

Thick Questions

You must create at least two “thick” questions to share with your group members.

A thick question is a question that is not found directly in the text. You must infer to find theanswer. Thick questions require more than a one or two word response. They deal with thebig picture and large concepts.
