PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The same HUNTER quality found in all ofour remote control valves is also found inthe PGV family. This Professional GradeValve is a solid, heavy-duty performerdesigned to satisfy the requirements of themost demanding job sites.

Meets the Needs of AllResidential/Commercial ProjectsThe versatility of the PGV valve is theanswer to anyone who demands options. The valve is offered as an angle, globe orglobe/angle combination in a full range ofsizes, including 1" with or without flowcontrol, 11/2", and 2". Flow capabilityranges from a low of 1 gpm (0.23 m3/hr,3.8 l/m) all the way up to 120 gpm(27.2 m3/hr, 454.2 l/m).

Available as an option, the HunterAccu-Set™ valve pressure regulator is animportant tool for the professional installer. The Accu-Set™ is the product of choice forinstallation on PGV valves when the staticsupply pressure is just too high for sprinkleroperation or when the irrigation main linesneed to be at maximum pressures due tolong pipe runs. Also, the Accu-Set™ is theideal pressure regulator to use when differentirrigation zones require different outletpressures due to product specifications, suchas sprays and rotors. Easy to install and easyto read, this dial-in pressure regulatingmodule automatically adjusts as needed toprovide an accurate and consistent workingpressure in the zone piping.

Designed for Years of LifeHunter developed the PGV valve with itsmultitude of features, because of a marketneed for a strong product with dependableperformance.

The rugged, extremely tough body andbonnet contribute to a high pressure rating of150 psi (10.3 bars, 1034 kPa). In addition, the valve features captive bonnet screws,

diaphragm and a captive solenoid plunger.Plus, the heavy-duty Hunter solenoid, withits 5-year warranty, is sure to keepeverything working for years and years.

Easy to Install, Easy to MaintainMaintenance is an ongoing reality to anyproject and like all Hunter products, theeasy-maintenance PGV was designed withthe installation and service needs of theprofessional installer in mind. Offering aglobe/angle configuration in one valveallows the installer to readily place the valvefor easy access. The PGV’s diaphragm, solenoid plunger, and bonnet screws are allcaptive parts, eliminating the chance of lostparts. Through-holes in the body allow dirtto fall through the screw holes instead ofallowing it to pack at the bottom, where itcan make it impossible to tighten the screwupon reassembly.

The bonnet screws used in the PGV lineare unique to Hunter valves. These screws, specifically designed for use in plastic, thread quicker and truer into the valvebody. They are compatible with a varietyof tools: a hex nut driver, a Phillips screw-driver or slotted screwdriver for easyservicing. When installing irrigationsystems, something as simple as a bonnetscrew design is all that it takes to savetime and money.

FEATURES ANDBENEFITS

Globe or Angle Models…Flexibility in design

Many times the irrigation main line isinstalled much deeper than the system’slateral lines. This may be due to localcodes or for freeze protection. For thesesituations, Hunter offers 11/2" and 2"valves with a globe/angle configuration inone valve. The globe configuration offersthe best choice for those systems that havethe main line at the same depth as thelaterals. The angle configuration allowsthe installer to place the valve on top of adeep main line, which allows easy accessto the valve for maintenance.

In addition, the PGV angle configurationboasts a lower pressure loss across thevalve compared to a globe style valve, providing a big advantage on systems thatmay experience low operating pressures.

Body Options…Maximum choices, minimum effort

Hunter is aware of the many differentvalve requirements that are prevalent intoday’s irrigation market. With that inmind, the PGV is designed as a veryadaptable valve in the residential/commercial market. The PGV is availablewith a variety of inlet and outlet sizes andconfigurations: NPT, BSP, Male x Barb,Male x Male, and Slip.

The barb outlet valves have become aninstant hit in the colder regions of the US,where polyethylene pipe is frequentlyused for laterals. Contractors report theirinstallation times have decreased tremen-dously when this valve is used on theirjobs. Eliminating the addition of an extraadapter or two to the manifold not onlysaves time and money, but also saves onthe possibility of leaks.

Barbed Connections…Poly pipe connectionsmade easy

An overwhelming requestby Hunter valve userswas to develop a valvewith a barb outlet connectionbuilt into the valve for poly pipe users.Hunter responded with four 1" models tochoose from. The 1" globe with flowcontrol in MNPT and MBSP threads andthe 1" globe without flow control in bothMNPT and MBSP threads are nowavailable. With all of these models, thetime-saving benefits have proven to besubstantial for the installer, because they nolonger need to thread adapters or nippleswrapped with Teflon tape into the valve toattach to poly pipe systems.

Flow Range…Highly versatile valve for all flowrequirements

The flow range of the PGV is exactly whatinstallers are looking for in 1", 11/2", and 2"valves. Systems requiring a flow rate aslow as 1 gpm (60 gph), such as for low-volume irrigation, are easily accommodatedwith the 1" PGV. Also, irrigation systemsrunning up to 120 gpm per zone, which canbe found on large commercial sites, arewell within the 2" valve’s designedcapabilities.

High-grade materials used for a150 psi rating…Made of durable materials to resist wear

If you are in the market for a valve thatneeds to take the pressure, the PGV is yourchoice. Featuring solid heavy-dutyconstruction built with an ABS skirtedbonnet, this valve takes up to a constant150 psi without regard to hot summertemperatures. The superior design of thePGV helps eliminate any reduction inperformance when temperatures go up: acommon occurrence with 100% PVCconstructed valves.

Captivebonnetscrews

Heavy-duty Solenoid…Provides dependable operationand long life

The entire line of Hunter valves hassomething in common: the same heavy-duty five-year warranty solenoid. Install-ers will find that not having to stock twoor three different solenoids for valves ofthe same manufacturer are a real plus.Another plus is the solenoid’s captiveplunger, which enables easy servicing ofthe solenoid but eliminates the chance forany lost internal parts.

It only takes 11/2 turns to remove orreplace the solenoid which makes twistedsolenoid wires a non-issue (a tremendousbenefit to installers or maintenance peoplewho work with valves).

The Hunter solenoid is unique becauseit operates on a reverse flow principle. Thecenter hole in the solenoid bowl is an inletport, instead of an exhaust port. Wheninstalling long wire runs, this solenoid isvery efficient, especially under highsystem pressures.

A big advantage to this reverse flowaction is that it reduces potential largepressure spikes against the valve. Suchspikes could cause damage not only to thevalve, but to other components of theirrigation system as well. With the PGV,when a surge pressure spike hits the closedvalve, the solenoid plunger will openslightly to allow the spike to traveldownstream and dissipate through thezone piping, minimizing any damage thatcould occur. The solenoid plunger thencloses immediately, preventingunscheduled system operation.

6

Captive Bonnet Screws, Diaphragm andSolenoid Plunger…No lost parts duringservicing

When servicing is required, the PGV is the valve thatmakes it easy. The screws, captive within the bonnet, aredesigned to be removed by anut driver, Phillips, or slottedscrewdriver. Another uniquecharacteristic to the PGV lineis the type of screw used.Specifically designed for usein plastic, the screw sports alarge thread gain, allowing it to threadquicker and truer into the valve body.

In addition, all parts are captive withinthe solenoid (a great feature in a valve, assuring those parts will not be lost in themud). The PGV also features screwthrough-holes in the valve body fortrouble-free screw placement. If dirt getsinto these holes it’s no problem: as thescrew is turned into the body, the dirtcomes out the bottom. (It sounds simple, but other brands actually require removalof the valve to clean out the debris.)

Fully Supported Diaphragm…Prevent stress failure in tough conditions

The PGV diaphragm is fully supported byan ingenious diaphragm support ringdesigned to prevent premature stressfailure. The ring is also designed withsmall holes in it. These holes allow waterto keep the diaphragm from sticking to thesupport ring after periods ofnon-use, such asbefore the landscap-ing is installed orwinter shutdown.

Diaphragm support ringprevents stress failures.

Debris Tolerant…Designed to eliminate failure causedby debris

With the PGV valve installed in theirrigation system, callbacks for weepingvalves are a thing of the past. The PGV ishighly debris tolerant because of its“crowned” body seat and a revolutionarynew polymer that is used in the diaphragm

seat assembly. By virtue of the factthat the body seat is crowned it

will not allow any contaminantsto catch during valve closing,

making it verydifficult for debristo become trappedby the diaphragm. If debris were tobecome imbedded

in the diaphragmseat, the polymer

material utilized in thediaphragm seat retains its

original shape after the imbedded debris isflushed through the valve.

Adjustable Flow Control WithNon-Rising Handle…Flow adjustment and servicing made easy

Flow management is a simple processwhen using the Hunter PGV with itsnon-rising flow control handle in the 11/2"and 2" sizes. A non-rising handle means

the valve can be placed closer to thevalve box lid for easier servicing.

When fine tuning the system, adjust to the desired zoneflow either by hand or usinga valve key. If necessary, theeasy-to-turn flow controlhandle completely shuts the

valve off without thepossibility of damageto the diaphragm, evenunder maximumpressure and flow

conditions.

Optional Flow Control in 1" SizesFacilitates flow management as needed

The 1" PGV can be ordered with orwithout an optional flow control stem. With the flow control option, zone waterpressure and flow can be managed right atthe valve for optimum efficiency. Aremovable flow control handle, generouslysized for easy gripping, makes flowadjustment a quick and easy process.

Heavy-duty Bonnet…Designed to provide maximum durability

Through repeated testing of valve designs, the PGV has incorporated in it a bonnetthat goes beyond the typical plastic valvebonnet. The design features a skirt aroundthe perimeter of the bonnet, which gives itincredible rigidity or “hoop strength.” Anexample of this would be the difference inrigidity between a Styrofoam cup with alid attached and one without a lid attached.Without a lid, the cup is very malleable, but when a lid is attached the cup walls arestrengthened tremendously.

Bonnet Air Relief…Air release to minimize system stresses

The PGV is designed with a patent pendingspecial air relief feature that facilitates theremoval of any air bubble from the topunderside of the bonnet. The removal of airfacilitates the elimination of water hammer. When the flow control stem is pusheddownward, any air trapped in the valve isreleased. The water pressure will then forcethe stem back up into place without leaking.

Internal Manual Bleed…Completely dry manual operation

For fast manual operation, a quick 1/2 turnof the solenoid allows water to bleed off ofthe top of the diaphragm and, as a result, opens the valve. All the water goes throughthe valve, which means no more watercontinuously leaking into valve boxes.

Accu-Set™ Dial Control PressureRegulation…For use on 1" without flow control, 11/2",and 2" valves

Exact pressure settings are a certainty everytime with Hunter’s Accu-Set™ pressureregulating module with its easy-to-read dialsettings. This dial assures exact downstreampressure between 20 and 100 psi (1.4 to 7.0bars, 138 to 689 kPa). There are no extragauges to carry for pressure adjustments orinspection. (A schraeder valve is included onthe unit for job specifications requiringchecking and setting using a gauge only.)

The Accu-Set™ dial-in module providesan accurate working (or dynamic) pressureto the zone. The module constantly adjustsas needed to provide a consistent outletpressure regardless of inlet pressurevariations.

The Accu-Set™ pressure regulator is animportant tool a professional installer willuse when the irrigation main lines need to beat maximum pressures due to long pipe runsor when static supply pressures are too highfor sprinkler operation. Also, the Accu-Set™

is the product of choice when different zonesrequire different outlet pressures due toproduct specifications, such as large rotorsprinklers zoned off the same main line assprayheads.

The benefit of the Accu-Set™ is that theirrigation system does not need to bepressurized to adjust it, resulting in a veryfast installation. With this unique pressureregulating module, just set the easy-to-readdial to the desired pressure, with or withoutthe system operating. The pressure dialed inis the pressure delivered to the zone.

The optional Accu-Set™ pressureregulating module is easy to retrofit on allICV valves, as well as 1" without flowcontrol, 11/2" and 2" field installed PGVvalves. On systems determined to havehigh-pressure problems after installation, the amount of time saved in labor, alongwith reduced costs, is considerable. That’sbecause the Accu-Set™ is installed without

8

a hassle, without cutting pipe and withoutreplacing valves.

Accu-Set™ Installation Instructions1. Remove the solenoid from the Hunter

PGV irrigation valve. (The 1" valvewith flow control is not designed foruse with the Accu-Set™.)

VALVE OPERATION

Basic Principles of Valve OperationWater enters the valve from the systemmain line and exerts a force against thecenter of the valve’s diaphragm. A smallorifice in the diaphragm allows the waterto flow through to the upper chamberbetween the diaphragm and the bonnet. The water continues to travel on through aport in the bonnet to the solenoid area. Thesolenoid has a light spring loaded metalpiston that, when the valve is closed, covers the inlet port hole. The surface areathat the water comes in contact with on topof the diaphragm is greater than thesurface area on the bottom of the diaphragm,so the valve stays closed until the water inthe upper chamber is released. (pressure xarea = force)

Electrically Opening a ValveWhen the solenoid coil is electricallycharged, the current creates an electromag-netic field and pulls the piston off of theport hole seat allowing water to flow intothe solenoid chamber, out of the solenoidexhaust port, and into the downstreampipe. The solenoid ports are larger than theorifice in the diaphragm, so the waterflows out of the upper diaphragm/bonnetchamber faster than it is allowed to enter. The pressure on the top of the diaphragmis released through these ports, and theforce from the mainline side pushesagainst the diaphragm and causes thevalve to open.

12

Manually Opening a ValveThe same principle is at work when avalve is manually opened using themanual bleed. The pressure on the top ofthe diaphragm is released through the useof an internal or external bleed. Theinternal bleed on the ICV mechanicallylifts the solenoid piston off of the upperchamber exhaust port allowing the waterto be released into the downstream pipe. Some valves have an external bleed whichallows water to exit the upper diaphragmchamber into the valve box.

Closing a ValveWhen the controller turns off the lowvoltage current flow, the solenoid pistonspring pushes the piston back over the inletport, and stops the flow of water fromgoing through the solenoid chamber andexhaust port. The upper diaphragm/bonnetchamber begins to fill, and soon reaches anequilibrium point when the psi (pounds persquare inch) is the same on both sides ofthe diaphragm. The diaphragm springcontinues to gently push on the diaphragm, closing the valve further. The combinationof the spring exerting pressure on thediaphragm and the water building up in theupper chamber bring the valve to a closedposition.
