Mary Kingsley’s Fur Hat

Famous for her eccentric behaviour and appearance, Mary Kingsley wore this moleskin hat during her travels in West Africa.

Often described as “an extremely amusingwomanwith a strange taste for odd forms ofdanger”,MaryKingsley came to adventuring late in life, despite the fact that explorationseemedtobeinherblood.Thenieceofawell-respectedtravelwriter,shespentmuchofherlifehelpingherfatherinhisstudiesofAfricanreligionsandlaws,andnursinghermother;however,beforeherfirsttriptoAfricain1892,shehadnevertravelledfurtherthanParis.

Atatimewhenitwasn’tappropriateforawomantowalkthestreetsofLondonunaccompanied,travellinginpreviouslyunexploredareasofWestAfricaentirelyalonewasdecidedlyeccentricbehaviour.However,whenaccusedofbehaving improperly,Kingsleyreplied:“Neither theRoyalGeographicalSociety’slist,noranyother,ofarticlesnecessarytotravellersintropicalclimatesmakesmentionofhusbands.”

Shehadequallyfirmviewsaboutwhatclothingwasappropriatefortravel,reportedlysaying:“YouhavenorighttogoaboutAfricainthingsyouwouldbeashamedtobeseeninathome.”Shegainedareputationforeccentricdress,andworethismoleskinhat,nowstoredwithinthearchivesoftheRoyalGeographicalSociety,throughouthertravelsinWestAfrica.ShegotthatmoleskinhatwhilestayingwiththecannibalisticFengtribeintheGabon.

KingsleywentontoworkasanurseinCapeTownduringtheBoerWar,anditwashere,in1900,thatshediedofheartfailure.Herbodywastakenouttoseainatorpedoboatandshewasgivenamilitaryandnavalfuneral.Burialatseawasauniquehonourforwomantoreceiveatthetime,andshewasfurtherhonouredwhentheAfricanSocietywasfoundedinhermemoryin1901.
