Think Deep – Stand up – Speak out & Change Your World Katarína Sabolová & Markéta Zajícová

Saturday, 13:00 – 14:30, Ďumbier This is a 2-day continuous workshop (Saturday, Tuesday), thus, by subscribing, participants apply for both days

What are the things that really matter about Human Nature? Is it the person? The personality? The situation? The context? The culture? The values? The environment itself? Are there only good or only bad people? Are there only good or only bad conditions/environments? This workshop session and later on the practical follow-up are aiming for a mind-set shift related to Zimbardo’s developed training concept while focusing on shifting from a fixed one into growth: (1) by letting participants get a deeper understanding of the evil vs. hero concept (Zimbardo, 2004) and the cross-cultural differences; (2) by applying a cross-cultural approach and its various aspects in relation to the topic of the workshop; (3) letting our participants first think and reflect and later by giving them the opportunity to practice and get inspired by today's very famous approach developed by Philip Zimbardo known as HIP - Heroic Imagination Program, which is actually a core program of “Understanding Human Nature”. Building on one of its main pillars - focusing on the mind-set, our workshop tries to support and help our participants in the mind-set shift from a fixed mindset— which we can understand as a belief that one cannot change one’s abilities or personal characteristics such as intelligence — toward a growth mindset — in sense of a belief that one can improve aspects of oneself with time and effort (Zimbardo, Heroic Imagination Project, 2015).

Life Has Always Two Sides – Or Does It? Benedikt Říčný

Saturday, 13:00 – 14:30, Kriváň

As psychologists, we encounter a wide range of people; people with a wide range of stories and experiences they made throughout their lives. Each of these stories and experiences is different. We perceive these stories through our eyes and our perspectives, which again are very different. To come closer to their point of view, empathy is our most significant tool. As psychologists, we do not judge, we are trained to approach people and situations without our prior judgement, through empathy and individual analysis of the issue at hand. Do we though? Are we truly able to dissociate ourselves from what we are currently dealing with in order to fully comprehend the matters our clients are speaking about? Do we not just fall into a cognitive bias or fallacy, into a false precedence of objectiveness? Most likely, we do, and that is okay. Psychologists are people after all. This workshop will give you points to think about for the next time you approach a new client, a new topic, a new situation, not only in your professional life, but hopefully in your personal as well.

How to Resist Someone´s Dark Side? Nika Šablatúrová & Markéta Pešoutová

Saturday, 15:10 – 16:40, Ďumbier

Nowadays, when people are surrounded by different stimuli and do not have enough time to recognise them adequately, it is highly possible that they will be the victims of someone´s

Saturday

manipulation. This workshop will give the opportunity to improve participant´s skills and work on their assertiveness. One of the aims of the workshop is to understand the importance of the ability to distinguish manipulation. The second goal is to learn various tools how to detect manipulation. This workshop will improve participant’s ability to confront manipulation. Among other professions, psychologists can often get away with manipulating people - especially clients. Knowing how to work with those people will increase participant´s effectiveness in dealing with different situations of everyday live.

How to Develop Positive Psychological Capital (PsyCap)

to Enhance Personal Performance Agniezska Zawadzka

Saturday, 15:10 – 16:40, Kriváň

Psychological capital or PsyCap is defined as “an individual’s positive psychological state of development and is characterised by: (1) having confidence (efficacy) to take on and put in the necessary effort to succeed at challenging tasks; (2) making a positive attribution (optimism) about succeeding now and in the future; (3) persevering toward goals and, when necessary, redirecting paths to goals (hope) in order to succeed; and (4) when beset by problems and adversity, sustaining and bouncing back and even beyond (resilience) to attain success’’ (Luthans, Youssef et al., 2007, p. 3). Efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience have been featured as best meeting the defined PsyCap inclusion criteria of being state-like and demonstrating performance impact. Following the above definition, PsyCap theory development indicates that the four dimensions possess a common underlying positive agentic capacity, that is, those with high PsyCap tend to be more determined, expend more effort, expect success, manoeuvre obstacles more effectively, and bounce back from setbacks more readily (Luthans, Avolio, Avey & Norman, 2007; Luthans, Youssef et al., 2007). The aim of this workshop is to show how we can develop each of the four components of the PsyCap to enhance personal performance.

The Power of Positivity – The Benefits of Experiencing Positive Emotions and Developing Positive Emotionality

Agniezska Zawadzka & Magdalena Walczak Sunday, 9:00 – 10:30, Ďumbier

What is positivity and why do we need it? Can the experience of positive emotions change our lives permanently for the better, increasing their quality? Dr. Barbara L. Fredrickson has been searching for the answers to these questions for over 20 years. Doctor Fredrickson presents results of the research in The Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions describing numerous benefits of the development of positive emotionality. According to Dr. Fredrickson, positive emotions are accompanied not only with a feeling of pleasure, but also with many positive changes in intellectual, physical, social and psychological resources (Fredrickson, 2003). At the workshop, we will discuss each of these areas and show you how you can develop yourself, so that you can flourish and experience more and more happiness every day.

3 Facets of Intercultural Competence Ulrike de Ponte & Hans van Eck

Sunday, 10:00 – 13:00, Chopok

This is a 3-day continuous workshop (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday), thus, by subscribing, participants apply for all 3 days 180 minutes, limit of 25 participants

EFPSA represents a multicultural and colourful network of psychology students, therefore the topic of „Intercultural Competence“ in combination with „Two Sides of One Mind“ can be important because of at least these three reasons:

Sunday

6

1) Psychology offers a lot towards that topic; 2) Intercultural competence in psychologists can support bridging the gap between the „Two Sides of One Mind“;3) EFPSA as a multicultural group is a huge resource for learning from different perspectives This 3-day-workshop will give you a taste of how the Regensburg study programme is working (combine experience and theory); it will reflect on the dark side of „colonialism by the Euro-American scientific community“ and ideas of how to deal with it; it will illustrate how you can foster intercultural competence in yourself.

Working with Transference in Psychodynamic Treatment

of Narcissistic Patients Karel Riegel

Sunday, 11:00 – 12:30, Ďumbier

A major part of currently known psychotherapeutic approaches to personality disorders (PDs) aims on symptom reduction. From the long-term perspective, it seems to be more efficient to target the level of personality functioning and the personality organisation. The Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) aims on the change in the personality structure, which represents an ambitious challenge especially in the case of narcissistic patients. The workshop offers all participants a look beyond the symptoms, i.e. the look on the mechanisms of personality functioning of patients with narcissistic personality structure in a therapeutic relationship using specific strategies, tactics, and technics of the TFP. The presentation contains case studies covering the diagnostic process, as well as demonstration of the critical moments in the work with transference. For better understanding, the attendance in the preceding theoretical lecture is highly recommended.

Key Role of the Group Scheme in the Integrated Psychotherapy/Knobloch Lenka Beranová, Markéta Petrášová, Gabriela Kosíková

Miroslava Coufalová & Alžbeta Hulmanová Sunday, 11:00 – 12:30, Kriváň

Theory of IP/K is based on the conceptual framework of group scheme. An individual is a part of a small social group and Integrated Psychotherapy continuously works with the whole group system, which is remote from Freud's conceptual system of one person´s settings. Individual group scheme or the cognitive-emotional map of significant others forms the basis of a complex, information processing system that influences experience throughout life as well as motivation and interpersonal functioning. This workshop presents the use of group scheme as the principal part of the therapeutical process in the Integrated Psychotherapy / Knobloch, showing interaction of an individual with the representatives of their significant others, facilitated by the psychotherapist.

Growing up in a Dysfunctional Home Erling Vevante

Sunday, 14:10 – 15:40, Ďumbier

Limit of 25 participants

Sunday

7

Childhood is the foundation we build our lives upon, for children growing up in dysfunctional homes this becomes a shaky foundation. Hardship and the lack of resolving one’s issues and emotions often mark a child for life. We might say that a childhood, good or bad will last for lifetime. Understanding the mechanics of one’s childhood can be the key we need to understand and later behaviours and it will put us in a better position to understand their behaviour and to help. In this workshop, we will look upon what our educational program revolves around, childhood. At the beginning, we will define a “dysfunctional home”, which will give us a solid base to debate effect and consequences on growing up in this type of family. In the extension of this, we will discuss how we use understanding of problematic family background when trying to help these children.

How to Become a More Forgiving Person? Lucia Martinčeková

Sunday, 14:10 – 15:40, Kriváň

Limit of 25 participants

"We are supposed to forgive everyone; everyone includes ourselves." Denis Waitley

All of us from time to time fail to meet expectations, break our own standards of right and wrong, hurt ourselves, others or are hurt by someone else. Feelings of anger, guilt, shame, self-condemnation, blame or unhealthy ruminative thinking are typical reactions. However, when they are too intense or last too long, they may become maladaptive, depress us, worsen our daily functioning, or even steal our sense of hope and purpose. Although wounds heal in time, time does not heal wounds - concrete actions do; therefore, participants of the workshop will learn about the main principles of forgiveness toward others and self-forgiveness. We will reflect on and discuss about our experiences with and without forgiveness and work through practical exercises designed to promote forgiveness. Forgiveness is a process and cannot be reached during one workshop, however by learning, applying and practicing forgiveness, participant may become more forgiving person and experience increased well-being.

Experiential Learning Workshop – “All We Can Do

Is to Inspire People” Ivo Hrdina

Sunday, 14:10 – 15:40, Chopok Limit of 14 participants

Workshop is identical (not continuous) to workshop on Monday, thus, we recommend to apply for only one of these days

By experiential learning we understand an educational process that combines experiential situations, their debrief and reflection in order to gain an experience which is transferrable into real life. The goals of such educational processes can be set up and reached in various types of environments, in various social groups (differentiated by age, social status, professional rank or other demographic factors) and accomplished by various means (games of all kinds, model situations, creative and dramatic workshops, talks and discussions, physically as well as mentally demanding challenges, activities leading to increased self-knowledge). In the Czech

Sunday

Republic experiential learning has a long tradition represented by many organisations offering self-development courses and often psychologists are involved in the educational process. The author of this workshop is a member of the biggest and oldest NGO “Vacation School Lipnice” focused on experiential learning. The main aim of the workshop is to introduce the experiential learning process. It will be more practical than theoretical (basic theories will be introduced) and participants will have an opportunity to try some of the activities often used in experiential learning courses.

Participants should be ready for active cooperation.

Working with Embodied Metaphor:

Symbolic Modelling Approach Jakub Lanc

Sunday, 16:00 – 17:30, Ďumbier

Within the psychotherapy or coaching context, metaphors often comes up from a client. What if we could use it as a doorway to help the client reach deeper and long lasting changes? Through the concept of ‘embodied metaphor,’ we will traverse the interface between mind and body, metaphor and model, the conceptual and the symbolic. A metaphor is more than a linguistic device - it is an active process central to the way we think, make sense of the world and take decisions. Metaphors allow people to express and give a definite form to feelings, behaviour, complex situations and abstract concepts. Knowing how to listen to a person’s metaphorical words and observe their symbolic gestures can give both of us great insight into how their inner world works. In practice we’ll learn ways to explore the ‘metaphorical landscape’ of the client and facilitate its changes, thus facilitating changes in their perceptions, decisions and actions. This workshop is based on the symbolic modelling methodology as well as recent research in the field of embodied cognition.

Conflict – Friend of Foe? Karolina Sikora

Sunday, 16:00 – 17:30, Kriváň

Have you ever imagined your life without conflicts? It is present in little things and is definitely unavoidable but sometimes unappreciated as well. During the workshop we will have a look at it from a whole different perspective to make it our friend and a growth opportunity. We will have a look at the river metaphor and learn the language of a giraffe. Using some active learning methods we will be able to understand and practice expressing our negative feelings in connection with Nonviolent Communication methods.

Aims of the workshop: 1. Learning the importance of all emotions and healthy ways of expressing them, 2. Gaining knowledge about what a conflict is, what is its role and how to respond to it, 3. Discussing the idea of peace as a process, 4. Practicing NVC methods

Learning objectives: At the end of the training the participants will: 1. Be able to resolve conflicts in an assertive way, 2. Have a bigger understanding of the dual nature of emotion, the conflict and its role in our personal and interpersonal growth, 3. Learn the cycle of peace and NVC methods.

Psychomime and Psychodrama as a Method of Group Therapy Marián Bartko

Sunday, 16:00 – 17:30, Chopok

The Attachment Style of People Addicted

to Psychoactive Substances Anna Štekrová

Monday, 9:00 – 10:30, Ďumbier

“Attachment behaviour characterises human beings form the cradle to the grave.” Bowlby, 1979

This research deals with the issue of attachment of people addicted to psychoactive substances. The theoretical part concludes with a chapter in which a possible link between bad quality of attachment and the development of addiction is analysed. The results of administration of the 'self-reported' questionnaire ECR-RS (Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationships Structures Questionnaire) - with the addition of the item “satisfaction in the relationship” - are presented in the research section. Method: The questionnaire filled out by a group composed of inpatients diagnosed with addiction to psychoactive substances. 62 people were in the investigated group and the 56 in the control group. Results: Research has found that the group of addicted people and the control group differ in the type of attachment and the level of its dimensions, namely avoidance and anxiety. Safe attachment occurred in the control group almost 3 times more likely, than in the group of inpatients with an addiction. Conclusion: Supported by other empirical studies, we consider safe attachment to be a protective factor in the development of addiction. Furthermore, in this research we confirmed that the level of dimensions of attachment, which a man develops with his mother in early childhood, is likely later transferred on his manner of attachment to his romantic partner, regardless of addiction.

What is Biofeedback? Miloš Šlepecký & Antónia Kotianová

Monday, 14:10 – 15:40, Ďumbier

Biofeedback (BFB) is a therapeutic procedure, which uses electronic or electromechanical instruments to accurately measure, process, and feedback reinforcing information via auditory or visual signals. BFB uses computerised technology to help clients learn to control or manage problematic stress responses. BFB can help a person change their behaviour by several pathways. By measuring the stress response, the therapist can find typical response patterns and modalities and can increase awareness of the Mind-Body Connection. The basic BFB theories are operant conditioning (Skinner) and classical conditioning (Pavlov). The method is unique by using only positive reinforcement and it is impossible be unsuccessful. The aim is to achieve Self-Regulation and this way gaining control over the symptoms. The Transfer of training to everyday life is critical for the final success. There are several modalities suitable for training. Peripheral skin temperature measures the extent of vasoconstriction or vasodilatation. Temperature training can help to achieve a state of relaxation, to get relief in migraine states or heals Reynolds syndrome. Finger phototransmission units (photoplethysmograph) measure vasoconstriction and vasodilation as a typical sympathetic response. Blood volume pulse (BVP) provides information about the

heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), which is a very important marker for health condition. It can be trained and improve. Units that record skin conductance activity indicating sweat gland activity as an important marker of ongoing activation. Training can get arousal to optimal level. Units that measure electromyographic activity (EMG) indicate the amount of electrical activity during muscle contraction. They are used in relaxation training and muscular rehabilitation. Respiration unit measures the rate, amplitude and architecture of breathing. Respiration training is an important part in stress related diseases. Neurofeedback (NFB) measures and trains brain waves. The localisation of electrodes and the type of training depend on initial assessment. NFB is an important part of treatment procedures in ADHD, ADD symptoms, epilepsy or brain injuries where research suggests to be a very efficient. There are several sophisticated neurofeedback methods as a classical training, training of slow cortical potential, Loreta training, Z score training, passive or active infrared training. Special applications of BFB training were developed for enhancing or optimal performance in sport, business, military, or schools. During the workshop, we want to show how biofeedback can help a person to change their behaviour using sophisticated technology and therapeutic skills.

Functioning and Unusual Interconnections of Sensory Organs: Seeing without Eyes, Hearing without Ears

Eva Phanvanová Monday, 16:00 – 17:30, Chopok

Sensory organs are ‘communication channels’ between the world and a person. They allow us to perceive the world, and in the end – survive. However, we often forget about their necessary role in our lives. The goal of the workshop is to realise the importance of the sensory perception through various activities. The participants will focus on the experience of perception through their senses and they will be more aware of their own feelings, while perceiving. Moreover, participants will learn about a phenomenon called synesthesia, in which stimulation of one sensory modality elicits perception in one or more other sensory modalities. Participants will try themselves different activities, through which they will get the idea of synesthesia and the way synesthetes perceive ‘their world.’

Understanding our own deep dark emotions can be hard work, and still our job is to assist others in their inner journey. How we observe, our attitudes and belief systems determine how well we connect to our finest resources. Jung’s theory about the unconscious mind claims that we have hidden creative talents imprisoned in our shadow that had previously been ashamed or not valued. These need to be recognised for them to be of service. That is why we need to develop non-judgemental observation, to see through the symptoms and understand what these talents have to tell us. We will also learn how to listen to our body as it is connected to our unconscious mind. Mindfulness is key to understanding and befriending our shadow aspects. The aim of this workshop is to practice some simple tools and learn how to use them for ourselves and to work with others. We will be able to share our experiences in different fields so we can have more flexibility to apply these tools.

“Mind the Mind” – To Combat the Stigma of Mental Disorders! Isidora Bašić

Tuesday, 13:30 – 15:00, Ďumbier

To stigmatise someone means to put a sign of disgrace and discredit on that person, and by doing so, to set them apart from the others in the society. The stigma of mental disorders still remains a powerful negative attribute in everyday life. That is why the Social Impact Initiative team first thought of educating high school students about stigma and its effects, making this campaign EFPSA’s contribution to European society. What does it look like to be a part of the “Mind the mind” campaign by the Social impact team? What was the strength of our impact in the first wave of the campaign and what do we hope to achieve in the second wave? How many challenges did we successfully overcome? During this workshop we will evaluate our impact so far, as well as the idea itself. Was making high school students our target group a good decision? What information should we pass on to high school students during a 90 minute workshop, in order for them to realise the importance of destigmatisation? A very important part of our campaign are also the Local Coordinators and the volunteers that arrange and deliver the workshops. We will discuss some of the frequent problems they came across and try to come up with some productive solutions.

Lucid Dreaming: How to Control Your Dreams Adam Prikler

Tuesday, 13:30 – 15:00, Kriváň

Dream lucidity is the awareness of the fact that you are dreaming. This awareness can range from a faint recognition of the fact to a momentous broadening of perspective. Lucid dreams usually occur while a person is in the middle of a normal dream and suddenly realises that they are dreaming. At this workshop, we will briefly discuss the history of lucid dreaming research, a bit of the processes that occur during sleep and various techniques of becoming aware of lucid dreaming while asleep. Afterwards you will have more control of your dream world and this ability could be very helpful when it comes to psychohygiene and personal growth.
