written two Affidavits of the Registrars elect, according to the
Statute. Then follow five leaves ofBirths, Burials, and Marriages,and one shamefully torn loose leaf, which seems to be one of manytorn out after the fourth leaf, then after two more, very manyleaves, perhaps more than now remain altogether have been cut
out, fragments only of the inner margin remain. The rest of the
book, nine leaves, begins at the other end, & contains an account
of Church briefs for fires &* the amount collected under each, from1694 to 1744. w

Previous to the demolition of the church, copies were made of the
inscriptions in the church and churchyard. Many of them relate to

''From the fact thatprior to the Restoration of Charles II. it was
judged unsafe to keep any record of Catholic baptisms and marriages,this Register of St. George's, Worcester dating, as it does, from1683 is probably the earliest in existence. Moreover, the curious
little volume with ivhich it commences an account book, 8 inches in
length, by about three inches in breadth bears evident traces ofhaving been at some time deprived of its earlier leaves. Throughoutthe volume the signature of a priest is only once attached, viz., that ofthe Rev. Charles Hanne, on 12 March 1749 ; but from 1778,the date of the commencement of the second volume, and, singularly
enough, the very year of the passing of the first Catholic ReliefAct,the name of the officiating priest is nearly always given." The
