Francis Farquharson of Monaltrie, from Aberdeenshire Occupation:Prisoner no.: 842Prisoner at:Inverness

Commonly called the ‘Baron Ban’ on account of his fair hair. In 1775 he asked to be allowed to rent some of hisforfeited estates. This was granted. He died in 1791. Monaltrie is near Ballater on the River Dee. FrancisFarquharson raised a regiment from Deeside and Braemar. Joined the Prince after Prestonpans on 3 October 1745with 30 men. He did not go to England but served in the actions of Inverurie, (Inverurie) Falkirk and Culloden. AtCulloden he was taken prisoner and imprisoned at Inverness on 19 April 1746, before being sent to London.Wounded at unknown location. At his trial date, 15 November 1746, he was found guilty and sentenced to death butreprieved the day before his execution and sent to the London house of Munie, a Messenger. He was pardoned oncondition that he went and remained abroad. This condition was altered to one binding him to confine himself to suchplace in England as the King directed. He was kept part prisoner at Berkhamstead, Hants until 1766 when he wasreleased. He retuned to Monaltrie where he devoted the rest of his life to improving the social and material conditionof his country. He introduced into Aberdeenshire improved methods of farming, which he had carefully studied whilein exile in England. His name is still cherished (in 1916) in the county as the man who did much to make Aberdeenthe great farming county it became.Reference sources:No Quarter Given. It is possible he was the son of Major David Stewart ‘late Gentleman to the Duke of Perth’His horse was killed underhim at Culloden and imprisoned at Inverness on 19 April 1746. He may be the Major Stewart who after his capturewas handcuffed so tightly that his skin was broken and was kept in that condition for ten days. He was tried atSouthwark and convicted but had sufficient interest to obtain a pardon as evidence was produced that he had savedthe life of Major Bowles of Hamilton’s Dragoons at Prestonpans. His case was considered by the Privy Council in July1747 and it was decided to pardon him on condition of his remaining in such place as the King should direct.
