Monday, 25 April, 2011
Each year thousands of Australians gather at Anzac Day services around the world to pay tribute to Australia's past and present servicemen
and women. It is an important day for all Australians. ANZAC Day celebrations will be held on Monday, April 25 2011, at various locations
throughout PNG. The two major ceremonies are conducted at Bomana War Cemetery and the Isurava Memorial.
Dawn Services will be held at the following War Memorials, and all will be attended by Australian Defence Staff:
Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby; Isurava Memorial, Isurava; Lae War Cemetery, Lae; Coastwatchers Memorial, Madang; Bita Paka War Cemetery, Rabaul; San
Remo Memorial, Kimbe; Surrender Memorial Cape, Wewak; Bomana War Cemetery
The main Anzac Day ceremony will be conducted at the Bomana War Cemetery in Port Moresby. The ceremony is coordinated by the Port Moresby Returned and
Services League (POM RSL) Club, and strongly supported by the Australian High Commission, Australian Defence Staff and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.
With a total of 3,351 Australian burials, no other war cemetery in the world contains more Australian war dead. It is a special place for all Australians and a fitting
place
to remember those Australian servicemen and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. A large attendance is expected and your participation
is
welcomed.
Isurava Memorial
The Isurava Memorial commemorates Australians, Papuans and New Guineans and those who fought in, or supported the battle over the Kokoda Track in 1942. The
Service is organised by the Australian High Commission and, because of the Memorial’s remote location, can usually only be attended by those trekking the Kokoda
Track at the time. As in previous years, participation in the Service by a small number of trekkers is encouraged.Philippines Manila Embassy www.philippines.embassy.gov.au Anzac Day 2011
The Australian and New Zealand embassies will again jointly host the Anzac Day commemoration in Manila. This will be held on Monday 25 April at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier (Libingan ng mga Bayani) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, Manila, starting at 5:30 am (click here for the map).
The commemoration provides an opportunity for reverent reflection on the ‘Spirit of Anzac’ epitomised during the Gallipoli campaign, which is so much a part of the
ethos and heritage of both Australia and New Zealand. The service will honour the sacrifice of those Australians and New Zealanders who lost their lives in time of
war and in the cause of peace.
The Anzac Day ceremony is attended mostly by the Australian and New Zealand communities, but is open to anyone else who wishes to remember the fallen of
those two countries.
Anyone attending the event may lay a wreath during the ceremony. This is normally done by organisations with a particular association with Australia or New
Zealand. There is no obligation to lay a wreath but anyone is welcome to do so. People wishing to lay a wreath should make their own arrangements — a range of
wreaths suitable for Anzac Day are available from Jamaica’s Floral Design (telephone 843 5821 or 844 7676).
People attending are encouraged to wear medals. Personal medals should be worn on the left breast; medals of family members should be worn on the right breast.
If you are attending the commemoration please arrive by 5:15 am to allow a prompt start. A ‘gunfire breakfast’ will be available following the ceremony.
