Oikonet: Learning Activities
LISBOA: oikonet 1st workshop (Proposal), 14 -19 July 2014
BNETWORK, BARCELONA , 10 January 2014
Organization team
• Alexandra Paio • She holds a degree in Architecture and a Ph. D. in urban design. She is assistant
professor at ISCTE-IUL and researcher at ISTAR-IUL. Currently she is teaching at 3rd and 5st level (Architecture, Shape Grammar and Digital Tools) at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism.
• Co-director of the advanced studies 3rd cycle postgraduate programme in digital architecture (ISCTE-IUL/FAUP). Founder and Coordinator of the digital fabrication laboratory - Vitruvius-FabLab at ISCTE-IUL.
• Research interest: generative computer-aided design planning for urban and housing for low-income populations using shape grammars and digital fabrication technologies. The main goal is to develop a grammar for humanized living and self-built housing based in the analysis of informal settlements in Africa and Latin America.

LISBOA: oikonet 1st workshop (Proposal), 14 -19 July 2014
Organization team
• Sandra Marques Pereira Sociologist, postdoctoral fellow at DINÂMIA-CET and a guest lecturer at ISCTE-IUL
Teaches Society and Architecture within the Master of Architecture. She also teaches at the doctoral programme of Architecture of the Metropolitan Contemporary Territories.
PhD thesis title, that recently received the 2011 IHRU Award (Institute of Housing and Urban Renewal) for the best doctoral thesis in this area, is: “Home and Social Change: an interpretation of the Portuguese society transformations through house”.
She is working on a project financed by the national Foudation for Science and Technology on residential trajectories and metropolization under which she is going to INED/Institut National d’études démographiques as an invited researcher.
Research interests: are the sociological meanings of domestic architecture as well as its uses and appropriations – ways of inhabiting. She is the author of the chapter “ Scenarios of domestic daily life: ways of inhabiting” of the last volume of the seminal collection, inspired in Ariés and Duby, A History of Private Life in Portugal.
Moreover, she has also experience within housing institutions outside academic world.

• Teresa Costa Pinto Sociologist, assistant professor at ISCTE-IUL and researcher at DINÂMIA-CET.
Director of the Master on Urban Studies where she teaches Cities and Territorial Theories. She is Member of Scientific Committee of DINÂMIA-CET.
PhD thesis title is “ Perception and Evaluation of Quality of Life in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon: resources, aspirations and needs in the construction of quality of life notion” (2006).
She is now working on a project financed by the National Foundation for Science and Technology on residential trajectories and metropolitan.
Her main research interest are in: social housing, housing policies, ways of living and habitat models, housing and quality of life.

Theme
• Contemporary living patterns in mass housing in Europe
This workshop is guided by three main questions: 1. What can we learn from the arriving of new ways of life, news families’
structures, the changing of demographic trends and new housing needs? 2. What framework conditions and project specifications must be in place
for co-design (and participation, at large scale) to be part of architectural processes?
3. How the digital revolution has transformed not only the process of architectural thinking but also making?

• Contemporary living patterns in mass housing in europe Hipo1 – formal mass housing In Portugal, the 1960s were a crucial point with respect to the emergence of a
new architecture through an exploration of new territories, projects and cultural, social and economic challenges.
The “Portela de Sacavém” (1965-1978) mass housing plan from Fernando Silva (1914-1983) became a paradigm in the context of urban peripheries in Portugal. Mass housing was a solution to democratize the access of home to a large number of people after the Second World War.
Soon it became a place associated with anonymity and uprooting. But, is it true? Or, it is only a prejudice that does not correspond to reality? Today, we must look at those neighborhoods in order to understand the way people live (in) it, the changes occurred and the emerging challenges.
Redesign and readapt the existing dwelling to contemporary living patterns.

Taken this into is necessary to think about: - new digital tools, - models and practices - define tactics, strategies and solutions.

Theme
• Contemporary living patterns in mass housing in europe Hipo2 – informal mass housing In Portugal the 1960s, as a consequence of the Colonial War, rural migration
to Lisbon had given rise to the first wave of mass informal housing. Dwellings were built for the proletariat and therefore landowners sought low-costs construction, profitability and minimum areas of land for housing. Some houses were composed mainly by a collective access serving the needs of insulation, ventilation and distribution. The “Bairro da Liberdade” is one of that informal settlement in Lisbon.
Between 1974 and 1976 a Portuguese governmental decree created the SAAL (Local Mobile Support Service). It was an attempt to produce types of architectural interventions with the direct involvement of the population and explored evolving housing as an alternative to the current formulae for the public housing tower block neighborhoods.
Rethink the design of contemporary housing in Europe based on the analysis of informal housing and in the participative processes of the SAAL.

Objectives
The objective of this international workshop will be: • to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue aimed at finding answers to the
meanings, ways and forms of contemporary living patterns in mass housing in europe
• the process also designs: from participation to fabrication
LISBOA: oikonet 1st workshop (Proposal), 14 -19 July 2014
BNETWORK, BARCELONA , 10 January 2014
Objectives
To explore working design process strategies based on: • Co-creation methods
- community participation - generative design research
• Contemporary living patterns - social housing; housing and quality of life; domestic scenario; new ways
of life; news families’ structures; the changing of demographic trends and new housing needs
- energy efficiency and construction materials • Digital tools CAD / CAM - parametric design - modular systems - digital fabrication
