3. Hearn, Editha L. You Are as Young as Your Spine. New York: Bunim & Bannigan, c2006. 3rd edition. Print. pp120.

Summary:

You Are as Young as Your Spine is written for all those who suffer from back problems, and the neck pain, rheumatism, sciatica, and other pain they cause. Hearn tells how to recognize the early warning signs of spinal disc trouble and how to relieve and prevent disc problems by taking care of your spine through a series of Corrective Movements. These simple movements take about one minute and should be done at least three times a day, especially when the spine begins to feel tired, stiffen up, or ache. Hearn also recommends exercises designed to strengthen the trunk muscles, which take ten minutes a day and are done in bed with full back support. Among the other valuable features of this book are the several chapters of practical information about how to avoid or ease back pain in daily life: while sitting at a desk, driving a car, carrying packages, lifting a child, or lying in bed.

H., et all. “Treatment of Multiple Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease Using Electro-Acupuncture and Oriental Herbal Medicine in a Dog.” Pakistan Veterinary Journal 32.4 (2012): 631-634. Academic Search Complete. Web. 29 Apr. 2015. Summary: A 4-year-old male Pekingese dog was admitted to the veterinary medical center, Chonbuk National University for evaluation of severe hind limbs ataxia, atrophy and paresis. Diagnosis based on physical examination, neurological assessment and computed tomogram (CT) indicated multiple thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) throughout the thoracic and cranial lumbar spine. Traditional veterinary medicine (TVM) based diagnosis was kidney yang deficiency syndrome. Initial high dose prednisolone therapy (1.5 mg/kg PO, twice daily) did not show any significant improvement. The dog was then treated with electro-acupuncture (EA) and oriental herbal medicine for 6 months, which significantly improved mobility, proprioception and spinal posture of the patient. Diagnosis, Treatment, and Future Directions.” Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine 27.6 (2013): 1318-1333. Academic Search Complete. Web. 29 Apr. 2015 Summary: Evidence of intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD) is extremely common in dogs, and its prevalence increases with age. It has many important consequences because degeneration of the intervertebral disks often is a prelude to disk herniation, which can injure the spinal cord, spinal nerves, or both. This review summarizes the advances in diagnosis and treatment of IVDD that have been made since the 1950s when the first detailed description of the degenerative changes were published. It also discusses new approaches to treatment of the associated spinal cord injury and new methods by which to classify injury severity that are currently under development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The article presents the first part of the write up about diagnosing intervertebral disk disease (IVDD), which is considered as one of the common conditions affecting chondrodystrophic dogs. It relates that among the symptoms for the disease include abdominal pain and thoracolumbar spinal pain. It further affirms that various examinations such as cranial nerve tests are needed to be able to know the prevalence of the disease.

WEB RESOURCES on IVDD

1. Dodgerslist: Dodgerslist: canine back problems, all things IVDD http://www.dodgerslist.com/ Summary: Linda Stowe created Dodgerslist because of a Dachshund named Dodger. Dodger had IVDD and was euthanized because of the lack of knowledge that conservative treatment IS a viable treatment option. When she heard of this sad story, she immediately went to work to create Dodgerslist with one goal in mind - save dogs' lives! Nine years later, Dodgerslist has members in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Mexico, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, India, Morocco, South Africa, and Dubai, and even one in Hong Kong. There are people reading our main website from many more countries too. This year, thanks in large part to your donations and subscriptions to our quarterly newsletter, Dodger's Digest, we were able to run ads in veterinary magazines and get our brochures into the hands of more and more neuro and ortho specialists and vet offices throughout the United States. With that has come increased awareness and increased support within the veterinary community for our quest. When all is said and done, what that means is that more dogs' lives are saved!

2. K9backpack http://www.k9backpack.com/ Summary: Allow us to introduce ourselves and let you know a bit about us, and why the K9 Back Pack was born: The K9 Back Pack team. We’re Brenda, Christina, Sharon and Guadalupe; former Dodgerslist team members, with many, many years of experience supporting IVDD dogs and owners. Having faced the condition with our own dogs, we know too well that when you need help and support, you need it not only with facts, but with understanding and kindness. We also know that IVDD is stressful for the whole family and that learning doesn’t have to be strict. We know that not all dogs and situations are the same and that sometimes what works for one, doesn’t work for another. We are not vets. Yet we spent countless hours experiencing the condition, listening, reading, researching, and replying to messages by e-mails, twitter and Facebook. We met so many of you when your dogs were down and you needed a helping hand, and to this day, some of you are still our friends.

Recently, all of us felt the need for a space in which people could learn and help their dogs heal while doing it with a smile and empathy. We felt we should reach out to people, posting and replying where they feel comfortable; the need for a place where we could really make a difference, without limitations. So now we embarked on a new project with the hopes of providing support and education, in a friendly, empathic and fun environment: The K9 Back Pack! We are on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and have our own web page, to make it easy for YOU to get support, the way YOU prefer. Share the news with your friends!
