LIBRARY NEWS March—April 2015 CEO UPDATE Let’s be grateful we are not on the east coast! But I am happy to say the deep freeze winter has not kept patrons from visiting the library. The branches are hopping with people – I love nothing more than that great library buzz when it’s clear the li- brary is a gathering place: people at the computers; using their devices; piling stacks of books, DVDs and magazines at the check-out counter; runny nosed, bright cheeked children shyly extending their hand out for a stamp; people sitting together talking or lingering after a programme together. You can’t help but get that “I libraries” feeling. Things to look forward to this spring are the Human Library Project on April 18, our series of talks on gardening – yes spring really is coming! More Trav- elogues – thank you Jocelyn! Plus storytimes – talk to Jocelyn or Monica to find out more. We also have a couple of neat March Break programmes, check them out in the program calendar! And of course, new books and new DVD’s are added to our collec- tion all the time. Just ask any staff member for what’s new. LANARK LIBRARIES CONNECT

ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY

is a library-initiated project that encourages Lan-ark County residents to come together through the shared experience of reading. The 2015 theme will be aging.

FLEE, FLY, FLOWN by Janet Hepburn

has been selected by voters as the one book to bring us together in this discussion. Multiple cop-ies will be purchased by Lanark County libraries, and events such as book discussions, film screen-ings, panel discussions, and workshops, all around the theme of aging will take place as we lead up to our main event in October.

HUMAN LIBRARY PROJECT

Lanark County libraries are banding together again this year to host the second annual Human Library Project! This year’s Human Library Project will feature a mix of returning ‘best sellers’ from last spring and ‘new releases’. The newcomers include a former federal Deputy Minister and Order of Canada recipient, Kundalini yoga instructor, a microbrewer, a non-profit housing guru, a therapy dog owner, a chil-dren’s book illustrator, an equality advocate, an award-winning puppeteer, an adventure racer, an Ojibwe lawyer, and more . Watch for a full listing of books and further details to be released soon. Until then, re-serve some time on Saturday, April 18th to experience a talking book first hand! Check out Noreen Young,

puppeteer, at the Pakenham Branch!

Corridor Gallery March 2015: Gallery Walls: Suzanne Warren Powell, Mixed Media Artist, "Wabi-Sabi Meditations". Suzanne's in-terests lie in Oriental Philosophy and nature and she teaches courses in Wabi Sabi, the aesthetic branch of Zen philosophy. For over 25 years Suzanne has taught, lectured and juried for many art organizations. She is a co-founding member and Artist mentor for the Ottawa Mixed Media Artists.

April, 2015: Gallery Walls: Shirley Mancino, Mixed Media Artist, "Paintings with Panache". Shirley is a profes-sional painter, teacher, lecturer, art critic and juror. Her passions for life and travel can be seen in her dra-matic artworks. Mancino has a distinctive and innovative style which brings a fresh and vibrant perspec-tive to people-scapes, animals and abstractions.

ANCESTRY.ca Looking to fill out your family tree? Come in to either branch of the library to use Ancestry.ca – Library Edition. It’s free to use on either your own computer/device, or on one of our computers. What can you do with this database? Almost anything you can do with a paid subscription to Ancestry.ca! And when you find a document you’d like to take a closer look at, you can email them to yourself and have a look at them later (and even print them!) at home.

There are thousands of records from around the world…census, immigration, and military rec-ords, as well as city directories, wills and photos and so much more. You’re sure to be able to add a few leaves to that tree! Also - stay tuned for more information on upcoming one-on-one ses-sions with Stephanie Tuffin to help you get started! For more information, call the Almonte Branch at 613-256-1037, or email Stephanie at [email protected]

SEED LIBRARY Our seed lending library is a free exchange designed to promote healthy local food and a stronger community. It’s also a great way to save money and try seed stock that is suited to your own climate. And to top it all off -- saving and sharing seeds is just plain fun!

Stuffing Seeds: In preparation for the spring launch of our MMPL seed lending library, we are busy stuffing seeds into our brand spanking new "Lanark County Grows. MMPL Seed Library" envelopes! Pomegranate Crunch Lettuce, Queensland Blue Squash, Gold Rush Yellow Beans, and Striped Roman Tomatoes are just some of the mouth-watering vegetable va-rieties that our seed-sharing friends from across Canada have donated to our first year seed offer-ings. Of course, we also will offer up some locally grown flower and herb seeds, collected by very kind and hardworking community gardeners here in Lanark County. If you have some surplus or re-mainder seeds that you can donate, please bring them in to the Almonte Branch.

Special Thanks to Heirloom Seed Suppliers: In ad-dition to the wonderful donations from community members and local gardeners across Mississippi Mills, we would also like to acknowledge the

following seed supply companies for their gener-ous support of our seed library initiative. These fabulous Canadian seed companies are all about preserving heirloom seeds. They work hard at finding quality open-pollinated seed for northern gardens. Some of them are certified organic. They have all donated to our community cause. They are small companies with big hearts!

Please take a look at their websites for more infor-mation about their amazing array of heirloom flower, herb, and veggie seeds:
