Liquid Morphine (Roxanol)What is liquid morphine?Liquid morphine, also called Roxanol, is a short-acting pain medication. It is also used to treat shortness of breath. Liquid morphine dilates the bronchioles in the lungs, therefore increasing the oxygen capacity.
How do I take this medication? • This medication may be mixed
with fluids or soft foods, or placed directly in the mouth.
• It may also be placed under the tongue if the patient cannot swallow or does not like the taste.
How do I measure this medication? Measuring the correct dose of medication is sometimes confusing. You may receive a bottle with a dropper, or a syringe without a needle. There are 20 milligrams of morphine in every millimeter of liquid (20 mg/ml). The nurse will usually instruct you in milligram doses. Refer to the picture below to better understand how to administer the medication.
How long will it take to work? This form of morphine is usually effective about 15 minutes after it is administered. It lasts for 2–4 hours. It is important to keep a record of how much has been given and the times at which it was administered. This will help your nurse and physician make adjustments to the dose if needed.
