Connecting the university to theNashville community and beyond is a hall-mark of L. Randolph Lowry’s presidency atLipscomb University. He views the city ofNashville as the university’s campus andthe world as its classroom.

Since his arrival on campus as the uni-versity’s 17th president in September 2005,Lowry has led the Lipscomb communitythrough a period of tremendous growth.

With its growth in recent years, Lipscombis consistently ranked as one of the top uni-versities in the Southeast. It is recognizedfor its quality in education and faculty, astudent population of more than 4,500 thatleads in academics, sports and communityservice, and a commitment to its faith-based roots that is as strong today as itwas when it opened more than 120 yearsago. Most important for Lowry is positioningLipscomb as a leader in education, prepar-ing students for not just what lies aroundthe corner, but for what is happening at allcorners of the world.

Lowry has also guided the institutionthrough physical and financial growth. Hesuccessfully led the Lipscomb 2010 initia-tive, a $54 million plan that dramatically ad-vanced the institution’s academicprograms and campus facilities, includingestablishing Middle Tennessee’s first Col-lege of Pharmacy. He also launched seveninstitutes designed to not only offer aca-demic programs but to also serve the com-munity through their programs andservices. Recently, Lowry announced Lip-scomb:Next, an initiative to invest $125 mil-lion by the university’s 125th anniversary in2016. Under Lowry’s leadership, the univer-sity has experienced an 81 percent enroll-ment growth.

In addition to his reputation for educa-tion innovation, Lowry is also one of the na-tion’s leading experts in the disputeresolution field. He has been featured in avariety of national media outlets as a con-flict management expert. He has receivednumerous accolades for his leadership in-cluding being named “Most Admired CEO”by the Nashville Business Journal.

Lowry is no stranger to service or mak-ing an impact. He received his Juris Doctor-ate from Hamline University in St. Paul,Minn., and joined the law school faculty atPepperdine University in 1986. He holds abachelor’s degree in political science and amaster’s degree in public administrationfrom Pepperdine. Lowry is an annual visitingprofessor at Vermont Law School and theCity University of Hong Kong. His consultingand training practice has included work inthe Netherlands, India and Argentina.

For more than 20 years, Lowry has beenone of the nation’s most sought-afterspeakers on dispute resolution. After estab-lishing an innovative program at WillametteUniversity School of Law in Salem, Ore., hefounded the Straus Institute for DisputeResolution at Pepperdine University Schoolof Law. The Straus Institute has beennamed the number one graduate programof its kind for eight consecutive years, achieving the top ranking in 11 of the last 16years by U.S. News & World Report.

In 2004, he formalized his longstandingconsulting and training practice into thefirm now called Strategic ResolutionsGroup, LLC. A lawyer, mediator, author, con-sultant and teacher, he has served clients inconflict management consulting, systemsdesign and training in more than 40 statesand on six continents.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Twentyyears ago when it was decided toadd intercollegiate softball atLipscomb the situation resem-bled the world at the beginning ofthe book of Genesis – a formlessand empty void.

There were no players. Therewas no coach either. And if therehad been players, there was nofield on which to play.

While it took more than the sixdays God needed to create theworld, everything surroundingthe softball program fell quicklyinto place..

“We had nine months at themost to get a team together,”Andy Lane, the softball team’sfirst coach, said. “We had very lit-tle scholarship money. We hadenough to sign a pitcher or twoand a few infielders. We addedsome basketball players and avolleyball player to complete theroster.”

Lane remembers well the firstmeeting to discuss the additionof softball with Dr. Carl McKelveyand then athletics directorJonathan Seamon.

“Softball at the time was reallygrowing,” Lane said. “There wereseveral donors who had an inter-est in seeing softball added. Itjust made a lot of sense as welooked to add sports. Softballwas the obvious next one.”

Lane had served as an assis-tant baseball coach with KenDugan, but had transitioned intobeing the school’s sports infor-mation director. He was serving

as associate athletic directorwhen he was asked to take overthe program.

“I was in the softball meetingas an administrator,” Lane said.“Dr. McKelvey was clicking his inkpen and saying that we needed acoach, but there wasn’t anymoney so it would have to besomeone already on the staff.

“I told them I had nevercoached softball, but I would helpthe school if that is what theschool needed. So much of it inthe early years was logistics.”

Lane’s biggest question waswhere the team was going toplay. It was also the main ques-tion asked by many potential re-cruits. Lane’s answer was asimple one, “Trust us”.

Job One: A Place to Play

“We had to build a field tobegin with. The old Onion Dellsite had become just a greenspace. Jim Allen was instrumen-tal in saying `let’s build a soft-ball field there’.

“One thing I wanted to do waslay home plate exactly where ithad been at Onion Dell. Therewere no remnants of Onion Dellat all except for a big tree thatwas still there. Coach Duganlooked around, saw the tree andpointed and said home platewas right here.”

Lane knew he needed help inlearning the game of fast pitchsoftball. As soon as the meetingwhere he was named coachended, he called a good friend,Bobby Bolden.

“Bobby’s daughter was playingsoftball at Georgia Tech,” Lanesaid. “I told him I needed to seewhat fast pitch softball was allabout. Georgia Tech and Sam-ford were playing so we went tothe game.

“It was my first fast pitchgame. I could tell immediatelythat pitching was the most im-portant thing.”

The announcement that soft-ball was going to be the newestsport at Lipscomb was made inDecember of 1994. In additionto all of his other tasks, Laneneeded an assistant. He hiredJ.J. Dillingham who also workedin Lipscomb’s sports informa-tion department.

Dillingham was also involved inrecruiting and he remembers1995 as being a tough year.

“In the spring and summer of1995 we didn’t have a field toshow recruits,” Dillingham said.“It was basically a plot of land.

“We didn’t have a locker room

at the time. We showed themrenderings of what we plannedto build. We had to tell them toenvision what it would be like. Itwas extremely challenging tryingto find kids who believed in whatwe were going to do.”

A Trusted Advisor Steps Up

The first year it was all aboutfielding a team and trying to wina few games. Lane points to DonLockridge, coach of the NashvilleEagles club team, for giving theLady Bisons some early assis-tance in filling out a roster.

“Don is the greatest softballcoach this city has ever had,”Lane said. “If we did anythingright it was recruiting some ofhis players. He had the top travelteam in the country.”

The first team in 1996 featuredthree TCAC All-Conference per-formers – second baseman AmyBecker, outfielder April Burtonand catcher Amy Jones.

But Lane kept recalling his firstimpression of fast pitch softball. He knew he needed strongpitching.

Pitching Pays the Bills

“I remember having a conver-sation with Steve Liddle (formerLipscomb player and majorleague coach),” Lane said. “Hetold me you better get a pitcher. That’s the name of the game infast pitch.”

The pitcher Lane got to signwith Lipscomb was Erin Hall, whohad played high school ball in thestate of Washington.

“Nate Hall came into my officeand said he would like to talkwith me about his sister whoplayed softball,” Lane said. “Mostof the top players were comingfrom west of the Mississippi so I

was interested when he said shewas from Washington State.

“We drove to Rockford, Illinoisto watch her pitch. Getting Erinwas the game changer for us.We averaged 30 to 40 wins ayear and there is no doubt it wasbecause of her.

“She had an incredible career. She embraced what Lipscombwas all about.”

Dillingham also credits Hall forbeing the key part of the founda-tion for the early success of theteam.

“We had a fairly decent year in1996 and finished fourth in theTCAC conference tournament,”Dillingham said. “In the fall of1996 we started playing in the

TransSouth. We won the confer-ence in 1997, Erin Hall’s first.

“We pretty much dominatedbecause of her. No one had seenthe West Coast style of pitchingthat she brought. She was veryeffective and very dominating.”

Championships Followed

Hall was named an All-Confer-ence performer in 1997 alongwith third baseman ShannonButler, shortstop Leslie Tuttle, first baseman Emily Rauschen-berger, Burton and Becker.

In 1998 the Lady Bisons onceagain won the conference cham-pionship behind the arm of Hall.In both 1997 and ’98 they also

played in the NAIA National Tour-nament.

Lane coached the team thefirst four years of the program. In1998 Kelli Dobbins (first team),Jamie Gleaves (second team)and Rachel Mattson (honorablemention) were NAIA All-Ameri-cans. In 1999 Hall and Dobbinswere named second team NAIAAll-Americans. Hall was namedhonorable mention in 2000.

“We were able to get some ofthe best players in Nashville atthat time,” Lane said. “Lipscombwas a great place to recruityoung ladies academically andsocially.”

2015 TEAM SPOTLIGHT

byMARK McGEE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It may be a “me, me,me” world, but for the Lipscomb softballteam the slogan for 2015 promotes a muchdifferent message.

For the Lady Bisons 2015 is all about theacronym “INAM” which stands for “It’s NotAbout Me.” Fans will notice the letters onsome of the Lady Bisons equipment thisseason.

Shortstop Paige Neely heavily influencedthe decision to use the slogan. She admitsshe was inspired when she first heard“INAM” spoken by Keenan Reynolds, quar-terback for the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I went to high school with Keenan,” Neelysaid. “I heard him talking after a game whenhe had set a school record. A reporter wasasking him questions about the record and

SOFTBALL GAMEDAY 17

Page 20: Lipscomb Softball Gameday 2015 Issue 1

about him but he completely turned thequestion around and talked about his team-mates.

“He kept on talking about `INAM’. I didn’tknow what it meant so I looked on Twitterand he had a hashtag `INAM’.”

One of the traditions for theLady Bisons is to paint brickswith slogans. The bricks arestacked up on a wall in thedugout and are added toeach year.

“I guess the coachesliked it,” Neely said. “Theytold me they wanted to useit as the team motto thisseason.

“We are focusing on theteam and what we do. You aregoing to have more success if you put theteam above yourself.”

Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said theteam’s use of a slogan for the season is rel-atively new, starting approximately twoyears ago.

“We decided it would be a neat way to ap-proach a season by having a central theme,”Ryman said. “Everything comes back to that

slogan and stems from that. I loved whatI.N.A.B. stood for.

“’It’s Not About Me’ is a cool phrase.Everyone on the team picks a word, or evena small phrase, something that defines them

for the season. What is going to betheir focus or central theme?

What can they come back toindividually as the thing they

want to focus on? Whatphrase or word reallydrives them?”

Neely chose ‘INAM’during the team exercisein preparation for painting

the bricks.“At the time no one knew

what it stood for,” Ryman said.“Everyone then explained why they

chose a certain word or phrase.“Paige told us what it stood for. It is a neat

idea and theme. The rest of 2014 that washer focus. Coming into this year we startedthinking about a slogan for the season and Ikept coming back to ‘INAM’.”

For a coach any theme that stresses theimportance of the team’s success over indi-vidual performances is a desirable one.

“I think in the times we live in now it is aworld of instant gratification,” Ryman said.“It is a world of ‘what’s in it for me. How isthis going to benefit me?’ We live in a veryme-driven society.”

Ryman thought the timing was right thisseason to change the focus from beingmore “me-centered” to being more “we-centered.”

“We have gone a lot of differ-ent ways with this,” Rymansaid. “We made a more spir-itual connection – it is notabout what we want, it isabout what God wants. How are we here to serveHis needs and what Hewants?

“As a team the time wasright to shift the focus. Asgood as our girls have been therecan still be more focus on how to be abetter teammate.”

All of the girls wear bracelets engravedwith the theme and Philippians 2:3.

“They serve as a constant reminder that itis not solely about you,” Ryman said. “Youcan’t win a game with a just a catcher or ashortstop. At times that sounds so obviousand so cliché’.

“But at the end of the day when they reallythink about it, they see how reliant they areon their teammates. If I make a low throw tofirst base, the first baseman can save me byscooping up the ball.”

Another reminder is through their weeklydevotionals as a team. A book being used inthe devotionals, in addition to the Bible, is“It’s Not About Me: Rescue From the Life WeThought Would Make Us Happy,” written byMax Lucado.

“This group has a lot of learning to do in

certain areas, but this is a really smartgroup,” Ryman said. “It has been neat to seethem change their focus. “

There are many things, often inconven-ient, that are part of a softball season. Oneof those is sometimes receiving a 9 p.m. texton a cold, rainy or snowy night to tarp the

field at Draper Diamond at Smith Sta-dium in order to practice or play

the next day.“It is easy to say I am in the

middle of doing somethingor it is too cold to do it,”Ryman said. “You cancome up with all kinds ofexcuses, but the field isnot going to tarp itself.

“It is little decisions likethat where you say this isn’t

convenient for me, but itdoesn’t matter because it is the

best thing for the team. They are reallylatching on to that accountability…to be ableto talk with each other and say somethingwhen someone says something that is notteam oriented. They are learning the deeperthings about what we are doing.”

Ryman stresses that the motto isn’t justfor the players. It applies to her and the restof the coaching staff.

“I am never going to walk away and say,`yeah we won that game because of me’,Ryman said. “It is not about me. It is aboutthem. They are the ones out on the field andin the spotlight. They are the ones who de-serve that credit.

“I may make the greatest squeeze playcall in the world. But, guess what? I am not inthe box. I don’t have to execute the play. Sowhether I make the call or not the player hasto do it. It is not about me and it’s not aboutany single one of them.”

“At the endof the day when

they really think aboutit, they see how reliant

they are on their teammates.”Kristin Ryman

The Lady Bisons were one of two teamsfrom the Atlantic Sun to earn at-large bidsto the NCAA Tournament in 2014. It markedthe first time the conference had receivedat-large bids.

They advanced to the finals of theKnoxville Regional before losing 2-0 to hostTennessee.

The season record was 41-15, 18-8 in theconference. They finished ranked No. 33 inthe RPI, the highest rating in the NCAA-erafor any LIpscomb team.

But that was last year. They enter 2015without seven of those players. They addedthree transfers and three freshmen to themix this year and are picked by A-Sun

coaches to finish second in the conference.Shortstop Paige Neely, centerfielder Brit-

tany Elmore and pitcher Tanner Sandershave been named preseason all-conferenceby both the A-Sun coaches and CollegeSports Madness. Infielder Mimi Cartwrightearned a second team selection on the Col-lege Sports Madness team.

The infield will have a completely new lookwith two starters – Neely and Cartwright –returning, but not at their former positions.

“We have always been a good defensiveteam,” Ryman said. “We have had our mo-ments here and there, but when you look atour fielding percentages through the years weare always in the top half of the conference.

Last year the Lipscomb Lady Bisons made history.Coach Kristin Ryman, entering her 10th season ashead coach, wouldn’t mind seeing history repeat

itself, but she isn’t dwelling on 2014.

Defense, Leadership are Keys

“Defense is a big emphasis for us. Know-ing we are going into the spring season withan infield where no one is playing the posi-tion they played before is a little nerve-wracking.”

Leadership is important, especially with

so many changes in the infield. Rymanpoints out that she and her staff spent al-most as much time in the fall working onand determining who the leaders might beas they did on the physical aspects of thegame.

“We spent a ton of time in the fall workingwith our infield and figuring out who weregoing to be our leaders on defense,” Rymansaid. “Just getting them comfortable andconfident in the positions they are playing isgoing to be a big deal for us.”

Neely is expected to move from thirdbase to shortstop replacing Bridgette Beglewho graduated. Cartwright, the startingsecond baseman last season, is beinglooked at for the third base position.

“Mimi can still play second, but we thinkshe fits better at third this year,” Rymansaid. “Paige is making the shift to shortstop,a position she is very familiar with but hasnot played in a while.”

Riley Brown and Abby Fenichel are also

getting in work at third. If Cartwright movesto third the second base battle will be be-tween Baylee Williams, a junior collegetransfer from Chattanooga State, and sen-ior Jordan Abell who was sidelined for muchof the fall with a concussion.

“Both Baylee and Jordan bring a few dif-ferent things to the table,” Ryman said.

Kristen Sturdivant graduated leaving firstbase open. There are a number of possibili-ties for the spot ranging from GraceyAguirre to freshman Caitlin Plocheck.

“Caitlin spent the most time there thisfall,” Ryman said. “She is a freshman andshe is talented.”

Laura Dukes, a senior transfer from Mid-dle Tennessee, is expected to be the pri-mary catcher replacing Rena’ Cothron whograduated. Also working behind the plate isfreshman Abby Fenichel.

“Laura brings the experience and matu-rity back there,” Ryman said. “Although thisis her first season with us she is a veteranbehind the plate.

“Abby brings a really strong upside physi-

cally. She does a nice job blocking. She doesa nice job throwing and framing. She is get-ting used to catching at this level and work-ing with our pitchers. She has a ton ofexperience playing at a really high level oftravel ball.”

Options in the Outfield

In the outfield Brianne Welch returns inleft and Elmore is back in center field. IfAguirre plays first base or serves as thedesignated player, the right field positionwill be up for grabs.

“Brianne is such a great defender andthat has always been her biggest strength,”Ryman said. “Her hitting has really improvedover the last year. She knows she has tocontinue to hit in order to stay out there.

“She brings that experience in the field. She brings a lot of lead-ership in the outfield. She is easily one of ourhardest workers. She isthat defender that wewant out there.”

Elmore, who can alsoplay second base, hasbecome a mainstay incenter.

“Brittany is a moreversatile player than alot of people might real-ize,” Ryman said. “Welike her in center. She is getting more confi-dent and comfortable out there.

“We are asking Brittany to bring a lot ofleadership because she is the centerfielder. We like her arm strength. We like the groundshe can cover.”

Welch could move to right. Other possibil-ities are Becca Dean, Fenichel and Plocheck.

“In an ideal world Gracey will be outthere,” Ryman said. “That is the way every-thing flows the best.”

Kasey Gibson and Dee Baddley are alsopossibilities in the outfield.

“Defensively we want to continue to be astrong team,” Ryman said. “We don’t wantto have a big drop off there and put pres-sure on our pitchers and our hitting to haveto win games. We want to play tough behind

our pitchers and give them the confidenceto do what they need to do.”

Hitting for Average, One through Nine

Ryman thinks this year’s edition could beone blessed with power at the plate.

“I think this team certainly has a powerpresence about it,” Ryman said. “How that isgoing to translate into extra base hits andhome runs is something I don’t know yet.

“We didn’t hit a lot of home runs this fallbut I can see this team hitting home runs. I

am intrigued to see thenumbers this spring.”

Players returningwith power potential areNeely, Aguirre, Welchand Cartwright. Dukes,Fenichel, Brown,Plocheck and Williamsalso have the ability togo for the fences.

“Hitting is a big confi-dence thing,” Rymansaid. “If we can getthose hitters rolling I

think they can take off from a power per-spective.”

Ryman predicts this team could be one ofher best from batters one through nine interms of batting averages.

“I certainly don’t think we are going to liveor die by the home run,” Ryman said. “I thinkwe are going to have more consistency withour hitters this year.

“I feel that this year, top to bottom, wehave hitters who will hit for a higher average. We are really excited with the potential.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – There were definitelya lot of “wasn’t sures” swirling around therecruiting and signing of Gracey Aguirrefour years ago for the Lipscomb softballteam.

Aguirre was a standout for the TexasStorm, one of the top club teams in thestate. But she wasn’t sure she wanted toplay softball in college.

At an exposure tournament in ChicagoLipscomb coaches Kristin Ryman and thenassistant coach Lexi Myers took a strong in-terest in Aguirre. When Aguirre’s coach toldher the name of the school wanting to talkwith her, there was another “wasn’t sure”.

“After the tournament my coach askedme if I had ever heard of a school namedLimpskin,” Aguirre said. “I told him I hadnever heard of them. I typed in the nameand when I Googled it all of these differentskin diseases popped up. I was like, who istrying to recruit me’?”

Aguirre didn’t have schools lined up totalk with her about continuing her career incollege, which prompted Ryman to deal withher own case of the “wasn’t sures.”

“Frankly, I was shocked that she wasn’tmore highly recruited,” Ryman said. “As therecruiting process continued she appearedto get better and better.

“Being from the state of Texas wherethere are a ton of schools from junior col-lege to Division I it was very surprising to meshe wasn’t more highly recruited. There aremoments as a coach when I kind of take a

step back and wonder if there is something Iam missing?”

Ryman started wondering if Aguirre wascarrying emotional baggage. Was there aninjury she was not talking about?

“The more and more we talked to people, the more we talked to her and her familyand her coaches we realized we weren’tmissing anything,” Ryman said. “Peoplewere missing her. It made it more exciting togo after her to be honest.”

The thought of moving from Houston toLipscomb also set up a “wasn’t sure” mo-ment for Aguirre, but she quickly dispelledany doubts she may have harbored.

“I had applied to Baylor and I wasalso looking at Dartmouth,” Aguirresaid. “When I first stepped foot onLipscomb’s campus I knew it was right.I had not gone on a campus tour or metCoach Ryman, but I had already saidyes in my head.”

The beginning of Aguirre’s softball careerwas the result of a “wasn’t sure” situation.

“When I was four my grandparentsthought they were signing me up for soccer, but they made a mistake and signed me upfor softball,” Aguirre said. “You can imaginethe look on my face when I went to what wasactually the first softball practice wearingmy soccer shoes and pads.”

Aguirre credits her grandfather, RubenGarcia, for encouraging her interest in soft-

ball and helping to mold her as a player.“My grandfather played college baseball

with Pan American and even went to theCollege World Series with them,” Aguirresaid. “He taught me everything I know aboutsoftball.”

When Aguirre transferred to Deer ParkHigh School as a junior she spent a seasonbeing coached by her grandfather whoserved as the junior varsity coach.

“That made us closer,” Aguirre said. “Dri-ving back and forth to practice he would tellme stories about when he played baseball. When I was having trouble he would tell mewhat he did when he had a similar problem.

“He would tell me that I play just like himwhich is weird. He is also a very quiet per-son. He is a `lead by example’ type of per-son. I go out there and do what I have to doto get it done just like him.”

Aguirre has been a key player for the LadyBisons throughout her career. She is stillmaking a comeback from surgery thatended her 2014 season after 24 games.Just how quickly she progresses will deter-mine where she plays this season. Shecould be in her old spot in right field, or shecould possibly play first base or serve as

the designated player.Whatever the position Aguirre plays,

Ryman wants to find a place for her bat inthe order. She was hitting .350 with twohome runs, five doubles, one triple and nineruns batted in at the time of her injury.

Aguirre admits she really can’t explain herhitting ability, but she likes being challengedat the plate.

“My favorite count is when I have twostrikes on me,” Aguirre said. “I know I haveto produce and I do better in pressure situa-tions. I don’t’ take the game too seriously. Idon’t overthink it. I just go up there and domy thing and whatever happens.

“I have no idea where my powercomes from. Until I was a sophomore Ididn’t consider being a power hitter – Ialways saw myself as a contact hitter. Before college I had only hit two homeruns my whole life.”

Ryman can point to two key reasons forAguirre’s success at the plate. One, me-chanics, can be coached. The other, hand-eye coordination, is a gift.

“She just had mechanics that most girlsdon’t have coming out of high school,”Ryman said. “She will swing and miss everyonce in a while but rarely does she swingand miss on strike three.

“She has been our lowest strikeout playerevery season and would have probably beenlast year if she had not been injured. She isjust so good at seeing the ball and hittingthe ball. We have to remind her that doesn’tmean you are swinging at everything. Wewant her to swing at pitches where she isgoing to be the most successful.”

Most every hitter, whether in softball orbaseball, has a weakness. Ryman points outthat Aguirre is an exception.

“She just doesn’t have a hole in herswing,” Ryman said. “It is hard for a pitcherto beat her. She finds ways to make thingshappen. We want her at the plate in keysituations.”
