LIPITOR ® (atorvastatin calcium) Tablets/Pharmacy First Program The LIPITOR/Pharmacy First program was created by Pfizer specifically for new LIPITOR users who fill and refill their prescriptions at Pharmacy First partner pharmacies. The package for this program includes: A User Manual filled with information about LIPITOR and heart health that provides answers to questions new patients may have and helps them understand why they should stay on medication A card inviting them to enroll in the My HeartWise™ Program from LIPITOR for free LIPITOR adherence programs, such as the My HeartWise Program, have been very effective for many patients. With periodic mailings, these programs have kept patients engaged since their introduction in 2002. The program is constantly evolving, and is another great way to help LIPITOR users stay motivated and committed to taking their medication. Data shows that only about half of those who were prescribed a lipid-lowering drug were still taking it 6 months later. 1 To help support their adherence to LIPITOR therapy, your patients should know that in clinical studies, 98% of LIPITOR users did not have side effects that stopped them from taking their medication. And LIPITOR has been tested in over 400 current and ongoing trials with over 80,000 patients. It’s the most tested drug in its class. Information like this is important for your patients to be aware of. That’s why this program may be valuable for your patients and why we encourage you to provide them with this resource. The LIPITOR/Pharmacy First program creates a great opportunity to strengthen the communication between the patient and the pharmacist. We think that it will prove to be of value to patients. LIPIT OR/Pharmacy First Adherence Program Protocol 1. It is important to keep these packages behind the counter. 2. LIPITOR® (atorvastatin calcium) Tablets is indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction,revascularization procedures, angina, and stroke in adult patients with multiple risk factors but withoutclinically evident CHD; to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with type 2diabetes and without clinically evident CHD, but with multiple risk factors; as an adjunct to diet toreduce elevated total-C, LDL-C, apo B, and TG levels; and to increase HDL-C in patients withprimary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial and nonfamilial) and mixed dyslipidemia.

LIPITOR is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations ofserum transaminases; in women who are or may become pregnant or who are nursing; in patients withhypersensitivity to any component of this medication.

Rare cases of rhabdomyolysis have been reported with LIPITOR and other statins. With any statin, tellpatients to promptly report muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Discontinue drug if myopathy issuspected, if creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels rise markedly, or if the patient has risk factors forrhabdomyolysis.

Due to increased risk of myopathy seen with LIPITOR and other statins, physicians should carefullyconsider combined therapy with fibric acid derivatives, erythromycin, immunosuppressive drugs,azole antifungals, or niacin and carefully monitor patients for signs or symptoms of myopathy earlyduring therapy and when titrating dose of either drug.

It is recommended that liver function tests be performed prior to and 12 weeks following both theinitiation of therapy and any elevation of dose, and periodically thereafter. If ALT or AST values >3 x ULN persist, dose reduction or withdrawal is recommended.

In clinical trials, the most common adverse events were constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, andabdominal pain.

Read the Patient Information that comes with LIPITOR before you start taking it and each timeyou get a refill. There may be new information.This leaflet does not take the place of talking withyour doctor about your condition or treatment.

If you have any questions about LIPITOR, askyour doctor or pharmacist.

What is LIPITOR?LIPITOR is a prescription medicine that lowerscholesterol in your blood. It lowers the LDL-C(“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides in your blood.It can raise your HDL-C (“good” cholesterol) aswell. LIPITOR is for adults and children over 10whose cholesterol does not come down enoughwith exercise and a low-fat diet alone.

LIPITOR can lower the risk for heart attack orstroke in patients who have risk factors for heartdisease such as:• age, smoking, high blood pressure, low HDL-C,

heart disease in the family, or• diabetes with risk factor such as eye problems,

kidney problems, smoking, or high blood pressure

LIPITOR starts to work in about 2 weeks.

What is Cholesterol?Cholesterol and triglycerides are fats that aremade in your body. They are also found in foods.You need some cholesterol for good health, buttoo much is not good for you. Cholesterol andtriglycerides can clog your blood vessels. It isespecially important to lower your cholesterol ifyou have heart disease, smoke, have diabetes orhigh blood pressure, are older, or if heart diseasestarts early in your family.

Who Should Not Take LIPITOR?Do not take LIPITOR if you:• are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or

are planning to become pregnant. LIPITOR mayharm your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stoptaking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away.

• are breast feeding. LIPITOR can pass into yourbreast milk and may harm your baby.

• have liver problems• are allergic to LIPITOR or any of its ingredients.

The active ingredient is atorvastatin. See the endof this leaflet for a complete list of ingredientsin LIPITOR.

LIPITOR has not been studied in children under10 years of age.

Before You Start LIPITORTell your doctor if you: • have muscle aches or weakness• drink more than 2 glasses of alcohol daily• have diabetes• have a thyroid problem• have kidney problems

Some medicines should not be taken with LIPITOR.Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take,including prescription and non-prescription medi-cines, vitamins and herbal supplements. LIPITORand certain other medicines can interact causingserious side effects. Especially tell your doctor ifyou take medicines for:• your immune system• cholesterol• infections• birth control • heart failure • HIV or AIDS

Know all the medicines you take. Keep a list of themwith you to show your doctor and pharmacist.

How Should I Take LIPITOR?• Take LIPITOR exactly as prescribed by your doc-

tor. Do not change your dose or stop LIPITORwithout talking to your doctor. Your doctor maydo blood tests to check your cholesterol levelsduring your treatment with LIPITOR. Your dose of LIPITOR may be changed based on theseblood test results.

• Take LIPITOR each day at any time of day atabout the same time each day. LIPITOR can betaken with or without food.

Don’t break LIPITOR tablets before taking.

• Your doctor should start you on a low-fat dietbefore giving you LIPITOR. Stay on this low-fatdiet when you take LIPITOR.

• If you miss a dose of LIPITOR, take it as soonas you remember. Do not take LIPITOR if it hasbeen more than 12 hours since you missedyour last dose. Wait and take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take 2 doses ofLIPITOR at the same time.

• If you take too much LIPITOR or overdose, call your doctor or Poison Control Center rightaway. Or go to the nearest emergency room.

What Should I Avoid While Taking LIPITOR?• Talk to your doctor before you start any new

medicines. This includes prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbalsupplements. LIPITOR and certain other medi-cines can interact causing serious side effects.

• Do not get pregnant. If you get pregnant, stoptaking LIPITOR right away and call your doctor.

What are the Possible Side Effects of LIPITOR?LIPITOR can cause serious side effects. Theseside effects have happened only to a smallnumber of people. Your doctor can monitor youfor them. These side effects usually go away ifyour dose is lowered or LIPITOR is stopped.These serious side effects include:• Muscle problems. LIPITOR can cause serious

muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure. You have ahigher chance for muscle problems if you aretaking certain other medicines with LIPITOR.

• Liver problems. LIPITOR can cause liver prob-lems. Your doctor may do blood tests to checkyour liver before you start taking LIPITOR, andwhile you take it.

Call your doctor right away if you have:• muscle problems like weakness, tenderness,

or pain that happen without a good reason,especially if you also have a fever or feel moretired than usual

• nausea and vomiting• passing brown or dark-colored urine• you feel more tired than usual • your skin and whites of your eyes get yellow• stomach pain

Common side effects of LIPITOR include headache,constipation, diarrhea, gas, upset stomach andstomach pain, rash, and muscle and joint pain.These side effects are usually mild and may goaway.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have sideeffects that bother you or that will not go away.

These are not all the side effects of LIPITOR. Askyour doctor or pharmacist for a complete list.

How Do I Store LIPITOR?• Store LIPITOR at room temperature, 68 to 77°F

(20 to 25°C).• Do not keep medicine that is out of date or that

you no longer need.• Keep LIPITOR and all medicines out of the

reach of children. Be sure that if you throwmedicine away, it is out of the reach of children.

General Information About LIPITORMedicines are sometimes prescribed for condi-tions that are not mentioned in patient informa-tion leaflets. Do not use LIPITOR for a conditionfor which it was not prescribed. Do not give LIPITOR to other people, even if they have thesame problem you have. It may harm them.
