At Lionville Middle School, we are dedicated to developing the whole-child, making sure every student feels loved, valued, challenged, and prepared to positively influence society and thrive in life. We recognize that we must fulfill the students’ physiological and safety needs, as well as their need for a sense of belonging, before they can be expected to learn in the classroom.

Our dynamic professional staff strive to create powerful learning opportunities where our students tackle real-world problems that charge them to think creatively and critically, work collaboratively, and learn deeply in rich, academic content areas.

Moreover, we work to include opportunities for growth and development beyond the classroom where students can learn from authentic experiences, grow as learners, and forge meaningful relationships within our school community.

Reach/Advisory Period

The purpose of our Reach/Advisory Period is multifaceted. Ultimately, that time period is designed to foster stronger adult-student relationships, a stronger sense of belonging, and community among students.

During that time, teachers work with students to ensure that their learning needs are being met, and encourage them to make good choices; social, academic, etc.

Also during that time, students have the opportunity to work on their Capstone Project, which is a student-chosen, self-inquiry based year long project.

Co-Curricular and Extracurricular

Students will have many opportunities to develop and sustain friendships based on similar interests at our school. Co-Curricular and extracurricular activity is important in our community, whether it be sports, music, art, drama or other interest-based activity. Lionville offers a robust co-curricular and extracurricular program that features after school activities during the school year. Intramural activities will be seasonal, based on student interest. Clubs will be recommended and formed by students and a faculty sponsor. All of these activities will be published and announced in school, on Schoology and on our school website.

Health and Physical Education

All students are required to take Health and Physical Education courses in BOTH 7th and 8th Grades.

The Physical Education program is designed to meet the physical, mental, emotional, and social needs of the middle school student through vigorous physical exercise, life skills including cooperative learning, team building, problem-solving and positive peer interaction.

It is important during these formative years that students acquire a knowledge base to make healthy lifestyle decisions. Students will view health as a state of physical, mental, intellectual and social well-being.

7th Grade World Language Electives/Encores

The World Language courses for 7th grade students will provide a functional approach that emphasizes communication skills. Students will be engaged in motivating activities that develop their ability to use the language authentically through extended sequential study.

The program will depict everyday life and social customs in the countries and the cultures of the target languages. A variety of activities, designed to emphasize everyday situations, will enable students to become skilled in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication.

Three courses will be offered to student 2x/cycle: Spanish Expeditions, French Expeditions, and German Expeditions.

Academic Expeditions

Our Academic Expeditions courses is designed as a bridge for 7th grade students as they exit our Reading programs throughout the academic year. In lieu of entering a world language when they meet the exit criteria for Reading, students will take this course.

The course will reaffirm strategies that students learned and mastered while in the Reading intervention program, and help them employ those strategies across all curricular areas.

Additionally, students will also learn and employ varied techniques designed to help them in the classrooms, with topics ranging from study and research skills to task management.

January, 2019 Hello parents/guardians of current LMS 7th grade students, The staff at Lionville Middle School is very excited to begin planning for the 2019-2020 school year. The course selection process is about to begin, and there is some information that we wanted to relay to you. This year, rising 8th grade students will choose their encore courses electronically via Home Access Center (HAC). Beginning on February 4th, students and parents will have the opportunity to go onto HAC and enter encore course selections. Directions on the scheduling process are attached. The HAC will close on February 11th. Any changes after that date are made by your child’s school counselor. Several courses will be pre-loaded and locked. Those pre-loaded required courses are Science, Social Studies, & Math, and intervention courses based on determined need. For many students, Grade 8 Math has been pre-loaded as their math recommended placement. Later this spring, administrative teams will utilize various data points to officially determine math placement. Students and parents will be notified if a change in their math course is required in late May/early June. Course descriptions for the encore classes are posted in the Middle Level Course of Studies handbook on our respective school sites; www.dasd.org/lms or www.dasd.org/dms . Information about the encore courses will also be shared at the student course selection presentation (1/23/19) and the parent course selection night (1/30/19). A draft course selection sheet will be provided to your student on January 29th. A copy of this draft sheet is included in this letter for your information. This course selection sheet can be used as a guide when scheduling via HAC. While we do our best to schedule all the encore requests, it is possible that changes will occur based on seat availability when scheduling occurs this summer. Submitting Course Requests through Home Access Center

In preparation for the 2019-2020 school year, Lionville Middle School students (rising and current) will submit their encore course requests through the Home Access Center (HAC). Core classes and courses requiring recommendations were already entered prior to HAC opening. These recommendations have been locked into the system. If students would like to change their world language course, contact their assigned school counselor.

Between February 4th and February 11th, students will submit their course requests electronically through HAC. Students will not be able to submit course requests online after February 11th. If changes need to be made after February 11th, students need to contact their respective school counselor. Please note that the building schedulers will try their best to fulfill all requests, however, all requests are not guaranteed to be scheduled.

The directions to submit course requests online are listed below. Please note that you should have 6.98 credits scheduled,.

Steps to Submit Course Requests through HAC:

5. If you chose the wrong course and need to delete it and replace it with another course, complete the following steps:

a. Click on the Edit button in the respective Subject Area of the course you need to delete. b. Find the course you wish to delete. It will be near the top of the list. c. Click on the Request box to erase the check mark in the box for that course. d. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the Select a Course window. e. Follow the steps under #4 above to add the course you want to add to your requests.

6. You need to schedule 2 alternative courses. This is in case the originally requested course does not fit into your schedule. To select an alternative course for a particular course, complete the following steps:

a. Click on the Edit button in the respective Subject Area of the course you need to add. b. Find the course you wish to add as an alternate request to a specific course by scrolling down through the list. c. Click on the Request box to choose the course. d. Click on the --- Make Course an Alternate --- drop down option on the right side of the screen. e. Select the option Alternate to ANY Course. f. Select the course that you would like this course to be the alternate for from the drop down list of courses that have already been requested on the right. g. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the Select a Course window.
