Message from the Head of School International Dinner The International Dinner last Friday was a great example of community collaboration at its best. Our families, students, staff and friends of BSM produced a wonderful evening that celebrated our cultural diversity and sense of community. Everyone enjoyed a fun evening that catered for all ages and tastes. It was an evening of great food and entertainment held in the true spirit of our family friendly atmosphere. One of the highlights for me was the number of attendees who were ex-parents, ex-students and/or friends of the school who have maintained that connection with BSM. In addition to all the positives, and there were many, the evening impressively raised over Php1,000,000 for our service projects with a strong focus on post Typhoon Yolanda support. These evenings do not succeed without a lot of hard work and commitment behind the scenes and this was a parent organised event. On behalf of nearly 1500 people who attended, I would like to express our thanks to the organising group and all members of the wider community who came together and contributed to make the 2014 International Dinner such a successful event. Community Service Two weekends ago, Simon Wooldridge organised for 4 staff, accompanied by our partner NGOs and by Mike Wooldridge (BBC Reporter), to visit southern Cebu and sites where we will be providing support to many communities who have been severely hit by Typhoon Yolanda. It was a really interesting visit that allowed us to connect with these groups and better understand both their needs and how we can provide support. This is one of several visits over the coming weeks, some of which will include our students. Mike Wooldridge has put a radio segment together about the visit, has an article on the BBC News website and has provided great coverage in his article on The Education section of the site http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-26135103 and http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-26140662. Additionally, last weekend two of our Year 13 students joined a BSM parent and a group from One Million Lights, in distributing 1,100 solar lights to households on Malapascua Island to families who were also affected by Typhoon Yolanda. The 1,100 lights were supplied through the BSM Typhoon Response Fund. Please see later in this newsletter a more detailed report. Happy Valentines Day First of all let me wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day and I know lots of you will have received lovely homemade cards from your children that I have seen them making during the week at school. Year 6 Assembly Secondly we must thank our year 6 children for an informative and entertaining assembly this morning where they illus-trated the different ways that they have used technology in the classroom throughout the year. Well done. International Day/International Dinner Whilst we are on assemblies, I will thank all the performers at the assembly last week. We had 3 great dances to entertain us. First our teachers demonstrated their Spanish dancing skills in dramatic fashion, this was followed by our ever won-derful support staff dance troupe who did a great rendition of the Singkil traditional dance, with a brave Girlie balanced precariously on two bamboo poles carried aloft. We ended with a rousing children’s Indian dance that they performed very well and clearly with a great deal of enjoyment. That illustrated the cultural elements to our International Day as did the International Dinner in the evening that was again a carnival of cultural shows and feast for the taste buds. Most acts were considerably more rehearsed than the gong and bells that Mr Barrett and I played! It was once again a fantastic BSM community event that was full of flavour and joy, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The other element to International day that we introduced this year was that internationalism now means so much more. A reflection that our students are growing up in a world where they are truly global citizens; which is particularly true of students at an international school. As responsible global citizens we also wanted to instill the belief that what we do makes a difference and our community service projects are a wonderful example of that. Year 6 delivered a rap of first world problems that really made us reflect on what real problems are. I have included a few here-: No Impact Week Another special event that we are running next week is our No Impact Week where we will take a theme each day with the following broad headings.

Stop making trash

Switch to more sustainable transport

Eat local, eat less meat Conserve energy

Use less water We have sent a separate comprehensive information letter out on all the activities for this week if you want to know more.

ICT in Education One often hears the phrase ‘ICT is everywhere these days’ and it is true that from the moment we wake up, ICT affects almost all aspects of our daily life. As a parent, getting to grips with new technology might sometimes appear as a rather daunting challenge or possibly even one that is simply too hard to overcome, and bridging the gap between your son or daughter’s use of technology and your own may sometimes seem impossible. Undeniably, one area which has greatly been affected by Technology and ICT in particular is education. Research shows that the use of ICT in the classroom tends to lead to improved student learning and when used purposefully plays a sig-nificant and positive impact on student achievement. Below are some of the benefits of ICT in Education:

Students tend to find learning in a technology-enhanced setting more stimulating and engaging than in a traditional classroom.

Students are generally more ‘on task’ and express more positive feelings when they use computers than

when they are given other tasks to do. Technology use during lessons tends to motivate students to continue learning outside school hours. The use of multimedia in class that combines video, audio and interactive elements can be used to provide

challenging and authentic content that will engage students in the learning process. Technology enables students to present their work in a professional way and create documents and

presentations to demonstrate what they have learned, and share those easily with their peers. Through ICT portals like Haiku and MyBSM, students are provided with the flexibility of ‘anytime, anywhere’

access and provided with opportunities to collaborate on assignments with people inside or outside of school wherever an Internet connection is available.

The use of ICT to help improve the quality of education is at the core of what we do at BSM and teachers fully under-stand that embedding ICT into their lessons is a vital element of 21st century education. If you would like to find out more about this, please visit the following websites: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/ICT_in_Education and www.nyu.edu/classes/keefer/waoe/amins.pdf In our next article we will look at the different devices that can be used in the classroom to enhance teaching and learn-

ing.

Next week is Week A.

International Evening Feedback I trust that you all enjoyed yourselves at International Evening last Friday night, which brought together approximately 1,500 people from across the diverse BSM community. The feedback I have received so far is overwhelmingly positive; here’s a selection

· “The BSM community works so well together – this makes me proud to be part of BSM” Parent

· “Based on this evening, I want to apply for a job at BSM” Teacher from Dulwich College, Beijing

· “I was most impressed with the behaviour and attitude of the students… what should I do to move my children to this school?” External supplier to one of the national food booths

· “The most beautiful school event I’ve ever been to” New parent

· “Which company did you use to put your entertainment program together? – I’d like to get them for my school”, Ex-ternal visitor

· “It was really good to see so many teachers performing this year” Senior student

· “The Thai food from the Dusit Thani justifies the ticket price on its own” Grand parent

· “Quality and range of food was worth much more than the PHP750 we paid – you should put your prices up next year” Parent

· “I had no idea we had so much talent among the community” Parent

Finances We are still working through the fine details of the finances, but the overall profit from the night will be around PHP 1 million, which will be donated to the BSM Community Service Fund. If you would like to see how this body spends its money, please click on this link: http://www.britishschoolmanila.org/sites/default/files/BSM%20Community%20Service%20-%202013%20Financial%20Hiighlights.pdf

Thank you Pulling off an event of this size (and clearing up afterwards) required an enormous co-ordinated effort from more than 200 people from both BSM and external suppliers. In addition to the Organising Committee members (Lea Stroem, Dedet Santos, Olly Campos) who all played key roles, we would like to thank the following for going beyond the call of duty:

· The country representatives

· The large number of members of the community who supported the country representatives with both time and resources

· The students and the parents participating in the parade – plus the British Ambassador for carrying the UK flag in the parade (even though his children attend ISM)

· Diana Cristobal, Mike Traje, Tina Coligado and the rest of the operations staff who cheerfully managed the preparations for weeks in advance plus the clean up afterwards

· Norman, Bles and the maintenance staff who installed the electrical work and co-ordinated with the sound system

· Danny and the security staff who remained calm while keeping tabs on the large number of external people entering the school

· The janitorial staff, who were still cleaning up after most of you had gone to bed

· The finance team

· Quennie Yang, Ana Odin and others from the support staff Social Events Committee who ran the auction, and staffed the entrance, among other things

· The school nurses

· The school photographers

· The bus chaperones who were pressed into service making decorations

PTA News

www.britishschoolmanila.org

· Eric of ICT who put together the video programme for the evening

· The students and others performing

· The students and parents serving food in the country booths

· Jigs Rabimbi and the grounds staff who helped with the decorations and set up

· The teaching support staff helping in the parade and monitoring the bouncy castles

Thanks and regards, Michael Morris BSM PTA President

As part of its on-going efforts to assist victims of typhoon Yolanda, BSM has fund-ed 1,100 solar lamps for the inhabitants of Malapascua. Malapascua is a small island off the northern tip of Cebu, previously best known for its long white beaches, and the most reliable thresher shark diving in the world. The island, however, was hit full-on by Yolanda, such that over 90% of houses lost at least part of their roofs, and many lost their homes entirely. The island’s economy re-lied most of all on tourism, fishing and coconut farming. Now, however, many tourists are (needlessly) still afraid to visit the island, most boats were damaged, and the majority of coconut trees were uprooted or broken. Electricity on the is-land was always problematic, as it is generated by a private diesel generator, and costs three times more than in Manila. This means that most of the population does not have electricity in their homes.

On 8 February, a team of One Million Light volunteers, including BSM students Alyssa Caganda and Jennica Chiang, as well as myself, travelled down to Malapas-cua for the distribution of the solar lamps. Now, the vast majority of households on the island will be able to cease spending a significant part of their limited rev-enues on kerosene, candles or batteries in order to have some light. The impact of these lights will include children being able to study in the evenings, being able to walk more safely through the post-typhoon debris (still not fully cleared), and in some cases to light up small businesses such as sari-sari stores. We hope that these photos can, in some small measure, convey the hundreds and hundreds of smiles and “thank you”s sent to you by these warm-hearted islanders. Without the generous donations of the BSM Community, this life-changing intervention would not have been possible. In order to keep helping the island, we encourage you to consider visiting this peaceful island paradise, and if you men-tion that you’re from BSM, you’re likely to be made very welcome! - Luc Vaillancourt, BSM Parent
