    Method of ProcedureServer Installation Part 1

    Installing CentOS 4 Linux Server

    Pre-installation

    1. Make sure you have a DVDROM drive.

    2. Make sure your PC can boot via the DVDROM drive.

    3. If you are going to use the whole hard disk, backup all your important data. Otherwise it

    will be formatted and all data on the disk will be deleted.

    4. During the installation you will be asked to enter the root password and a system user

    password, we recommend you to remember this information.

    5. List down network configuration settings.

    consult your network administrator for the followinginformation.

    IP Address

    Netmask

    Gateway

    Primary DNS

    Secondary DNS

    Tertiary DNS (optional)

    6. vi basic commands(Needed during the Apache, MySQL5, PHP5, ImageMagick,

    Magickwand, Java, Apache-Tomcat Installation).

    vi filename Editing or creating file.

    i Insert or Edit text before cursor /

    key Exit to

    :wq writes changes to current file and quits edit session

    :q quits edit session when no changes have been made

    :q! quits edit session and discards changes

    7. Linux Basic Command (Needed during the Apache, MySQL5, PHP5, ImageMagick,Magickwand, Java, Apache-Tomcat Installation)

    cd Change directory

    cp Copy files

    ls List files

    mv Move or rename files

    mkdir Create directory

    chmod Unix command that lets you tell the system how much (orlittle) access it should permit to a file

    tar Create tape archives and add or extract files.

    8. Installing Linux in text mode will render the mouse unusable. You will need to use thefollowing keys to navigate around the screen during the installation process:

    TAB used to shift through the options

    SPACE BAR used to select/deselect (an asterisk means the option is selected)

    Arrow keys used to move up, down, left and right on the screen.

    Starting Installation

    Insert the CentOS DVD Installer and reboot your machine.

    After you see the Figure A screen, type linux text Press Enter key to start CentOS

    Installation in text mode.

    Note: Before you start the installation you will be ask to test your CentOS4 DVD installer (FigureB). We recommend you to test it before you start the proper installation. This will make sure timeis not wasted on bad installation media/disk.

    2. Language SelectionUsing your mouse select a language to use for the installation. We recommend you to

    choose English (English), and then click OK to continue.

    3. Keyboard ConfigurationUsing your mouse select the correct layout type (for example, U.S. English) for the

    keyboard you would prefer to use for the installation and as the system default. Once you havemade your selection, click OK to continue.

    4. Installation TypeThis window will let you choose the installation type. Select Server and click OK.

    5. Disk Partitioning Setup

    Choose Autopartition as shown in Figure 5.a. Press Enter to continue.

    6. Automatic PartitioningChoose Remove all partitions on this system as shown in Figure 6.a. Press Tab to select OKand press Enter continue.

    7. Disk SetupThis window (Figure 7.a) show the summary of how the servers disk will be partitioned using theAutopartition chosen under Step 5 (Figure 5.a) The Size (MB) will vary depending on the space ofthe Hard Drive. Press Tab to select OK the press Enter to continue.

    8. Boot Loader Configuration.

    Make sure the User GRUB Boot Loader option is selected, otherwise, the system will notboot even after a successful installation. Select OK and press Enter to continue

    9. Bootloader ConfigurationThis window will let you append options to the kernel before it is loaded by the boot

    loader. Just select OK and press Enter to proceed. (Kernel options are not necessary/critical atthis point).

    10. Grub PasswordThis part is optional. It is recommended that this part be skipped. Grub password can still

    be provided after installation if required. Press Tab to select OK then press Enter to continue(Figure 10.a)

    11. Bootloader Configuration

    The bootloader can be configured on this screen. It is recommended to leave this part onits default state. The bootloader can be configured after installation if there is a need to. PressTab to select OK then press Enter to continue (Figure 11.a)

    12. Network Configuration

    The installation program automatically detects any network devices you have and displaysseparate windows for each devices configuration.

    The installer will prompt for configurations starting on the first network device (eth0), thenmoving to the next (eth1) and so on.

    Configure the network devices according to project plan. Figure 12.a shows the firstnetwork device configured with a static IP address (DHCP needs to be deselected to enable the IPAddress and Netmask boxes). Ideally for servers, network devices must be activated on boot,hence, make sure the Activate on boot option is selected.

    Figure 12.b shows a second network device configured via DCHP. This window is optionaland also depends on the machine specifications.

    After configuring the network devices, press Tab to select OK then press Enter tocontinue.

    Figure 12.c displays the Gateway and DNS options. Configure as per requirement. PressTab to select OK then press Enter to continue.

    13. Hostname Configuration

    The servers hostname can be configured under this window (Figure 13.a). Hostnameconfiguration can will depend on the existing network setup and project requirement/s.

    14. Firewall and SELinux Configuration

    On this screen, make sure to select [No firewall] and select OK and press Enter tocontinue. You may be prompted with a warning dialog about not setting the firewall. If this occurs,simply select Proceed and press Enter to continue (Figure 14.b)

    SELinux must be disabled (Figure 14.c). MySQL server will not start if this option isenabled.

    15. Additional Language SupportWe recommend selecting English (USA) language for this option and also the language

    you are using. Use the Reset button to cancel your selections. Resetting reverts to the

    default; only the language you selected for use during the installation is installed (ReferFigure15.a). After selecting your language, select OK then press Enter to continue.

    18. Package Installation Defaults.Select Packages to be installed (Use the Spacebar). Press F2 to select optional modules

    for the selected package (Refer to Figure 18.b). Below image shows MySQL Database packagebeing selected. Figure 18.b show optional module under MySQL Database package when F2 ispressed. After selecting all the required modules, select OK then press Enter to continue. After allthe required packages are selected, select OK then press Enter to continue.

    19. Package Group Selection

    Check the following packages:a. X Window System

    b. GNOME Desktop Environmentc. Server Configuration Toolsd. Web Servere. Mail Serverf. Windows File Server

    g. Development Tools we need to install most of these packages to satisfyother packages dependencies.

    h. X-Software Developmenti. System Tools.

    In the Development Tools package press F2 then select all underlying modules (refer toFigure 19.b):

    Select OK the press Enter to continue.

    20. About to Install

    Select OK then press Enter to begin the installation

    21. Installing Packages

    The installer will format the disk, transfer the packages to the disk (Figure 21.a), preparethe selected packages for installation (Figure 21.b), and finally install the packages (Figure21.c)

    22. Finish Installation

    After Installing the packages select Reboot and press Enter to restart the computer.

    POST Installation

    1. Grub MenuDuring boot up, the newly installed system will skip the GRUB menu by default. The user

    is given 5 seconds (Figure 1.a) to press any key to enter the menu (Figure 1.b), otherwise, thesystem will continue onto the next boot up phase (Figure 1.c) until the login prompt is displayed(Figure 1.d)

    2. First Login

    Try logging in with the root account created during the installation process. If login issuccessful, your installation can be concluded as successful.
