Power The Power LED will light up when the HomeLinkPhoneline Router is powered on. Note that there is noON/OFF switch; simply plug in the power adapter.

The LAN Indica tors

Link/Act Green. The Link/Act LED serves two purposes. If theLED is continuously illuminated, the HomeLinkPhoneline Router is successfully connected to a device. Ifthe LED is flickering, the Router is actively sending orreceiving data over that port.

Full/Col Green. The Full/Col LED also serves two purposes. Ifthis LED is continuously illuminated, the connection issuccessfully running in Full Duplex mode. If the LED isflickering, the connection is experiencing collisions.Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is flickeringtoo often, there may be a problem with your connection.Check the Troubleshooting section if you think there is aproblem.

100 Orange. The 100 LED illuminates when a successful100Mbps connection is made through the correspondingport.

The HomeLink Phoneline Routers Front Panel LEDsThe WAN Indicators

Link Green. The LinkLED illuminates when a successful

connection is made between the HomeLink PhonelineRouter and your Broadband device or network.

Act Green. The Act LED flickers when the HomeLinkPhoneline Router is sending or receiving data over thebroadband port.

Diag Red. The Diag LED illuminates when the HomeLinkPhoneline Router goes through its self-diagnosis mode

during boot-up. It will turn off upon successful comple-tion of the diagnosis. If this LED stays on for an abnor-mally long period of time, refer to the Troubleshootingsection.

The HPNA Indicators

Link A LinkLED will light up when the port successfully

connects to your phoneline network.

Act Green. The Act LED flickers when the HomeLinkPhoneline Router is sending or receiving data over theHPNA port.

Col If theCol LED is flickering, the connection is experienc-ing collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If thisLED is flickering too often, there may be a problem with

your connection. Check the Troubleshooting section ifyou think there is a problem.

If your network connections begins acting erratically, you may want to reset theHomelink Phoneline Router.

To reset your Homelink Phoneline Router, do the following:

1. Shut down all of your network components.

2. Disconnect the Homelink Phoneline Routers power supply and wait fiveseconds.

3. Plug the Homelink Phoneline Routers power supply back into the power

outlet.

Daisy-chaining your HomeLink PCs and peripherals can create a simple net-work that acts in the same way an Ethernet network acts on your PC's desktop.

While Ethernet networks usually revolve in a star topology around a hub orswitch, phoneline networks link together like a string of Christmas lights. In aHomeLink network, data passes into on one side of a port, and a new telephonecable continues out from the ports other side. You can string up to 30 PCs ona single HomeLink network, provided that the entire length of cable does notexceed 300 meters (1000 feet).

HomeLink networks can send data through existing telephone lines without

disrupting your telephone service, connecting over your existing telephonejacks. If you have PCs on two different floors of your house, plug one of thedownstairs PCs into the phone jack in the wall, and you're able to network yourPCs upstairs without running excessive amounts of extra cable.

4. Configure the following values.

Router Name & Domain NameThese fields allow you to supply a hostand domain name for the HomeLink Phoneline Router. Some ISPs requirethese names as identif ication. You may have to check with your ISP to seeif your Broadband Internet service has been configured with a host and

domain name. In most cases, leaving these fields blank will work.

Now that your HomeLink PhonelineRouter is wired into your network, youcan begin configuring your system.

1. Open your web browser and type

http://192.168.1.1 in the browsers Addressbox. This number is the default IP address of theHomeLink Phoneline Router. Press theEnterkey.

2. A username and password promptwill appear. Leave the User Name boxempty and typeadmin (the default password) in thePasswordbox. ClicktheOK button.

6. Windows will ask you to restart the PC. Click theYesbutton.

Repeat steps 1-6 for each PC on your network. When all of your PCs areconfigured,the HomeLink PhonelineRouter Setup and Installation is

complete.

3. In the Configuration window, select the TCP/IP protocol line that hasbeen associated with your network card/adapter. If there is no TCP/IP linelisted, refer to the Appendix to install the TCP/IP Protocol now.

4. Click the Properties button, then choose the IPAddress tab. SelectObtain an IP address automatically. Press theOKbutton. You have com-pleted the client settings.

5. Click theOK button. Windows may ask for original Windows installation files.Supply them as needed (i.e.: D:\win98, D:\win95, c:\windows\options\cabs.,etc.)

The Basic Setup screen is the first screen you will see when you access theUtility. If you have already installed and setup the Router, you have alreadyseen this screen and have already properly configured all of the screens values.

Router NameThis entry is necessary for some ISPs.

Domain NameThis entry is necessary for some ISPs.

Firmware Version This entry shows the version of the firmware you areusing. Future versions of the HomeLink Phoneline Routers Firmware maybecome available on the Linksys website.

Utility

The HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router has an internal integrated-circuit chip but no keyboard, monitor or mouse capabilities. Because of theselimitations, an administrative utility has been programmed into that chip. Allrouter-based administrative tasks are performed through this utility. The utilitycan be accessed by any PC on the network by typinghttp://192.168.1.1into the PCs web browser address window.

Upon entering the address into the web browser, a password request page willpop up.

Leave the User Name field empty, but type admin into the Password field.

4. Enter the HomeLink Phoneline Routers administration password into thePassword Confi rmbox.

5. Click theBrowsebutton and find the firmware upgrade file that you down-

loaded from the Linksys website. Double-click theupgrade file.

6. Click theUpgradebutton and follow the instructions there.

Filters block specific internal users from accessing the Internet. You can set upa filter through an IP address or a network Port number.

To Modify Filter Settings

Enter the IP addresses you wish to filter into the IP address fields. The userswho have these IP addresses will not be able to access the Internet.

You can also filter users by entering their network port number. Enter theport numbers you want to filter into the port numbers fields. Users who areconnected to the HomeLink Phoneline Router will no longer be able toaccess any port number listed there.

DHCP Client Table Click on the Client Tablebutton to show the currentDHCP Client information. (This information is stored in temporary memo-ry, so the list of clients could disappear.)

Here you will find links to all of the Utilitys internal support documentation,as well as the application that upgrades the HomeLink Phoneline Routersfirmware. To upgrade the Homelink Phoneline Routers firmware:

1. Downloaded the latest firmware version from the Linksys website(www.linksys.com).

2. Go to theHelpscreen (above).

3. Click Upgrade Firmware. A new page will appear (below).

Forwarding is generally used to set up a webserver, ftp server, or e-mail serveron your network. To add a server using Forwarding:

1. Enter the port number used by the server. On the same line, enter the IP

Address of the server that you want the Internet users to be able to access.

2. Configure as many entries as you would like until all of the link entries arefilled.

3. Click the Apply to save the settings.

With Dynamic Routing you can automatically adjust to physical changes in thenetwork's layout. The HomeLink Phoneline Router, using the RIP protocol,determines the network packets route based on the fewest number of hopsbetween the source and the destination. The RIP protocol regularly broadcastsrouting information to other routers on the network.

Block WAN Request

By enabling theBlock WAN Requestfeature, you can prevent your networkfrom being pinged, or detected, by other Internet users. TheBlock WAN

Requestfeature also adds another measure of security to your network byhiding your network ports. Both functions of the Block WAN Request fea-ture make it more difficult for outside users to work their way into your net-work.

Click the Applybutton to save any changes.

Port forwarding sets up public services on your network. When users from theInternet make certain requests of your network, the HomeLink PhonelineRouter will forward those requests to the appropriate computer. The HomeLinkPhoneline Router's DHCP function must be disabled to use Forwarding.

Troubleshooting

This section provides possible solutions to problems regarding the installationand operation of the HomeLink Phoneline Router. Read below description tosolve your problems. If you cant find an answer here, check the Linksys web-site at www.linksys.com.

1. I Cant connect to the HomeLink Phoneline Router. The HomeLink Phoneline Router is properly installed, all connectionsare OK, and it is powered ON.

Make sure that your PC and the HomeLink Phoneline Router are on the

same network segment. If you are not sure, initiate the DHCP function,let the PC get the IP address automatically.

Make sure that your PC is using an IP Address within the default rangeof 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 and thus compatible with the HomeLinkPhoneline Router default IP Address of 192.168.1.1

Also, the Subnet Mask should be set to 255.255.255.0 to match theHomeLink Phoneline Router. In the HomeLink Phoneline Router, youcan check these settings by using Control Panel-Network to check theProperties for the TCP/IP protocol.

2. The Diag LED stays lit w hen it shouldnt. The Diag LED lights up when the device is first powered up. Meantime,the system will boot up itself and check for proper operation. After fin-ishing the checking procedure, the LED turns off to show the system isworking fine. If the LED remains lit after this time, the device is notworking properly. Try to re-flash the firmware by assigning a static IPaddress to the computer, then upgrade the firmware again. If that doesnthelp, contact your dealer for further inspection.

3. I cant brow se through th e HomeLink Phoneline Router.

Check if both ends of the network cable and power adapter are properlyconnected. Check if the status LEDs on the front panel are functioningproperly.

The DMZ Host setting allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet touse a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or Video-conferencing.

To expose one computer, enter the computers IP address and click theApplybutton. Deactivate DMZ by entering a zero.

7. After a few seconds you will be brought back to the main Network window.The TCP/IP Protocol should now be listed.

There are different grades, or categories, of twisted-pair cabling. Category 5is the most reliable and is highly recommended. Category 3 is a good second

choice. Straight-through cables are used for connecting computers to a hub.Crossover cables are used for connecting a hub to another hub (there is anexception: some hubs have a built-in uplink port that is crossed internally,which allows you to link or connect hubs together with a straight-throughcable instead).

You can buy pre-made Category 5cabling, or cut and crimp your own.Category 5 cables can be purchased

or crimped as either straight-throughor crossover. Inside a Category 5cable are 8 thin, color-coded wiresinside that run from one end of thecable to the other. All 8 wires areused. In a straight-through cable,wires 1, 2, 3, and 6 at one end of thecable are also wires 1, 2, 3, and 6 atthe other end. In a crossover cable,

the order of the wires changes fromone end to the other: wire 1 becomes3, and 2 becomes 6. See the diagramson the next page for more detailed

information on straight-through and crossovercabling.

To determine which wire is wire number 1, hold the cable so that the end ofthe plastic RJ-45 tip (the part that goes into a wall jack first) is facing awayfrom you. Face the clip down so that the copper side faces up (the springyclip will now be parallel to the floor).When lookingdown on the copper side, wire 1 will be on the far left.
