INTRODUCTION

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of John Melmoth Dow, who was closely connected with the Central American coast trade. For nearly thirty years, he was a ship captain off the western coast of Central America and later in life settled on the Isthmus as agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.

Born in New York in 1827, he was intended for the law, the study of which he began at an early age. Failing health drove him to the sea. In 1850 he joined the Panama Railroad Company, which had received a concession from Colombia to build a line across the Isthmus of Panama. Dow made his first voyage to the coast of Central America in 1851 as 2nd Officer on the steamer "Fremont." When David Hoadley became president of the Panama Railroad Company in 1853, Dow was given command of the steamer "Constitution." The Panama Railroad was completed in 1855; however the company was not destined to monopolize the isthmian traffic. Soon after the road was completed, Dow opened the Central American service of the "Brig Line,' a part of the Panama Railroad Company, as commander of the steamer "Constitution." The line was composed of ten sailing vessels which made regular and rapid voyages between New York City and Aspinwall on the isthmus until 1870 when the business was sold to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.

The slow process of discharging and receiving cargo, gave Captain Dow ample time to pursue his interest as a n?uralist, exploring the Central American coast to collect marine flora and fauna. As a direct result of his labors, no fewer than 200 new fishes were discovered and named. A new species of tapir was also discovered by Captain Dow in the highlands of Guatemala. A handsome member of the orchid family found in Costa Rica bears the name of Cathleya Dowiana.

Dow carried on an extensive correspondence with Professor Spencer Baird of the Smithsonian Institution, and Osbert Salvin and P. L. Sclater of the Zoological Society of London pertaining to the collection and transportation of specimens of flora and fauna native to Central America. He was also an honorary fellow of the Zoological Society of London, a member of the New York Geographical Society, and of the Academy of Natural Science of Philadelphia. The University of Gottingen conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Dow's career as a ship captain ended in 1876 when he was appointed as a special agent for the pacific Mail Steamship Company. His professional papers include the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's shipping and trading contracts with Central American governments; administrative records, cargo and freight (mainly coffee and indigo) statements, and financial and commercial records, annual reports, logs, maps, and schedules as well as their telegraphic code.

7. Included in this professional correspondence are a few letters and newspaper clippings that pr0vide.a certain insight into a number of historical events of that central section of the continent in the second half of the nineteenth century. Of interest is correspondence with Central
