Editorial ExhaustThere are a few things I'd like to mentionhere. First, as the result of some feed backfrom Shannon Lee Mannion during the AllClubs meeting in January, I've createdsome new features for the Link.

On the back cover, I've added the table ofcontents. Previously it was added without

page numbers to the front cover, but it washaphazardly implemented. This shouldespecially help when you want to find anolder article in your Link stack - "hmmm, where was that article Cindy wrote on

    being a Chief Stewart" etc.

Also, I would like to have a page(s)dedicated every month to the racing resultsof all MCO members. This can be rally, road race (open and closed wheel), kartingetc. This issue doesn't quite have thefinished layout, but as I get moreexperience, I hope it will stabilize into asingle page. Nor am I sure how to handlethe larger MCO races, such as Solo-II.

Finally, I'm stepping down as the editor. There are more details on page 17, buthere I can say why. I really don't want tomove on, and wasn't planning on steppingdown for the foreseeable future. However, some time to reflect during January andFebruary has made me realize that I wantto make racing a bigger part of my lifeThis summer I'll be getting my racelicense, doing more marshaling, and I hopesome of the local racers will let me helpout as a crew member. The goal is that Ilearn more and different parts of racingoutside of just editing what others havewritten. I feel I've learned enough about

    doing the Link for now.

The other reason is that I hope to go toEurope for some travel and may be awayfor a few weeks or (I'm hoping) months.I'll be booking the airline for sometime

just after the ALMS weekend at Mosportwhere I'll be marshaling.

Once I'm back, I look forward to stayinginvolved with the executive, perhaps itwill be time for the elections by the timeI'm back.

    The Last Legby Steve Greiner

Just a note to inform you of the fun andexcitement Nick and I experienced onthe Snowy Safari Rally out of Peterbor-ough recently. This was the 3rd eventof the Yokohama Subaru Winter RallySeries, YWRS, and was by far the bestall-night winter event to date this sea-son, with fun, excitement and storieshad and made by all.

Our goal was a podium finish in theNovice class in this event, and up untilthe end of Leg C it looked like it wasgoing to happen, as we were leadingthe class, 0.5 minutes ahead of the 2ndplace team. To make it fair for the othercompetitors and add to the excitementand interest level, I misjudged a lefthand turn near the end of Leg C and raninto a very hard snow bank at about 75

kph. This incident bent the front rightsuspension creating a new and differentkind of vehicle handling and suspen-sion dynamic. As well we began to no-tice an odd clunking noise coming fromthe driver's side floor area (more on thislater).

And then things started to go really, really badly.

Nick made a transcription error that hadus starting 5 minutes late half waythrough section D1, instead of leavingat 5:46 we left at 5:51 am. Oops!

I attempted to make up the time bydriving the truck like it was a WRC car.We managed to make up three minuteson the 20 km section, passing a Subaru,as well as a Corolla GTS, and thencatching Carl Scheible and his son Ste-phen's Impreza WRX at the next check-point.

I believe the last time I looked at myTerraTrip display; we had averagedabout 92 kph for the section, this wasby far the most scary-exciting drive Ihave yet to have. Pity Nick. The manhas incredible courage to sit in the otherseat while I'm driving, a good man tohave in a pinch or three.

So six minutes were lost, that's ok, Icould handle it. Not! I was more than alittle put out, but with no more errors,Nick and I still had an outside chance. So off we went ...

Unfortunately, due to the excessiveforce put on the F-150 in section D1, Imanaged to damage the truck somemore by punching a hole through theright side exhaust header. This gavepoor performance and unusual resultswith the application of the throttle. Theonly way to get the Ford to go througha turn when things are working well isto apply judicious throttle pressure.

When things are working badly, mak-ing it through the turns gets extremelydifficult. When the exhaust broke, thethrottle did not react at the correct times

and powerwould come onand off unpre-dictably. Aftera group ofpoorly execut-ed turns on mypart we man-aged to do acredible 270degree turn onone of theacute right-hand off-cam-

    ber bl indd o w n - h i l lturns. Fun! Un-til ...

Another groupof turns got thebetter of meand I managedto stuff thetruck a coupleof sections lat-

er, well and truly beaching it on a snowbank. After a few choice expletives, which I have fortunately, recorded forposterity, Nick and I managed to freeour selves arriving 7 minutes late at thecheckpoint. Well, so much for finishingin the top three in class, but dammit wewere still going to do well in the finalresults. So off we went again. Until...

The next checkpoint, where we had lessthan half a minute to stop the truck, getthe new time sticker for our route card, buckle back into the seat and get goingagain. I never managed to get my har-ness done up, and this was unfortunatebecause the harness is the only thingholding me in my plush and comforta-ble bench seat. And then ...

Away we went and cut the right reartire down on a rock on an extremelytwisty piece of one lane road on thenext section. This added a new level to

the experience as I limped the three-wheeled truck along. There was abso-lutely no way we were going to quit atthis point so I continued to drive the 1.5km to the next checkpoint. Couldn'thave stopped anyways, as the road wasonly one lane wide. I asked for sometime to change the wheel but no luck, and after about 6 minutes we were offagain, on ...

A new mission, drive as fast as wecould, to get to the next checkpoint ontime. But of course we had another is-sue to deal with, the spare tire that weput on the right rear was mostly flatwith only about 15 lbs of air. I onlyfirst noticed this as we barreled througha paved turn at some unrecommendedrate of speed. For those of you unfami-liar with the dynamics of a 5000-poundpickup truck, it was one interesting mo-ment. Nick commented on this later onthe drive back to Ottawa when I men-tioned it, saying he knew somethingwas wrong because I never slow downfor turns.

By the way, we also managed to loose

the route card on this same section, which caused a frantic search and shortstop and on the side of the highway,Nick was using it as a seat cushion. In-credibly we made up the whole 6 mi-nutes, in fact arriving 20 seconds earlyat the checkpoint, but ending up with afull minute early penalty. Things werejust not going our way.The business end of the beast.

Pushing it at the Winter track (CCS).

To complete the final leg we missedseveral turns, and after the last check-point, I stopped to fill the flat tire. Nickhad mentioned that we had some time toarrive at the finish. Turns out we didn'tand we arrived on the minute we hadcalculated, and I had to run to presentour route card on time. As a final pieceof info, somewhere along the last leg isa 150 lb bag of gravel that I was using

for ballast, last I heard no one hit it.

Team F-150 managed to finish 8th inclass out of 46 starters in Novice, 19thoverall, and still running in 5th place inthe series. This was a better result thanlast year. Team F-150 completed thatmemorable 2001 rally as the last vehiclestill running, after stuffing it 20 minutesinto the event.

No repair bill yet, but a quick summaryof the handling and appearance en-hancements added to the truck in the fi-nal leg of the rally are as follows.

    1) Unique alignment settings, makingthe front wheels point east and west dueto bent right track rod.

    2) Shifted rear axel and dif-ferential and cut rear tiredue to fixed object contact.

    3) Damage to the exhaustheader due to over enthusi-astic pedal pressure duringthe beginning of Leg Dwhich caused the engine toshift to the right on its

    mounts.

    4) Deflated tire from a de-fective wheel that was re-placed during the last eventdue to, again, fixed objectcontact.

    5) Loss of 1/4 of winter bal-last weight required for the truck to'stick' to the ice and snow, along withthe truck's wind-gate being torn off bythe bag of gravel on its hurried exit fromthe truck bed.

    6) One headlight failure, along with arather large dent on the passenger sidedoor during the snow-bank-beaching ex-perience. And darn it a license platecover is cracked too.

    7) A couple of days after the event allthe hangers holding the exhaust systemto the truck decided to fail (see photo atleft).

    8) Oh, and that clunking noise under thedriver's floor? It turns out that two ofthe mounts that hold the truck's cab to

the frame has given up the ghost. Lucki-ly, there are still four more to go.

By the end of the rally the truck nowran and drove like it looked, an absolutepile of stinking crap and corruption, ohwell.

After the event I was speaking with CarlScheible and he asked me if I was theguy driving the truck. Sweet, noticed bya real pro driver. 'Man' he said, 'Youmust have one really large set of balls'.Now that's a compliment.

So ends The Last Leg, until the doubleheader in Kingston, Steve Greiner onbehalf of Nick Berry, signing off.

Winter Driving School:Bob Armstrong opened a discussion onthe school as follows: there were good conditions for the Feb.

2nd school, but it was cold for the work-ers. the next school will be Feb. 9th. Jim Holtom asked if there would be

room for more, and Bob responded thatFeb. 9th and 16th were full, and it wouldbe up to the Club to decide about one onFeb. 23rd. Richard Muise added thatthere were currently 19 on the waitinglist.

Craig closed with a statement that theRally group is wholly committed to theClub, as evidenced by the diversity re-quirement in the Rally Championship, for example competing in the Club'sWinter and Summer Solo II events.

At the end of the meeting, Craig advisedthat the next rally (Saturday's Snowy Sa-fari) is full, but there may yet be posi-tions open for the 2 early March events.

Daytona Report:Jim Holtom and Len Clue reported ontheir experiences at the Daytona Rolex 24and Grand Am Cup respectively. Your

Secretary here made the cardinal error ofgetting too engrossed in the proceedingsand forgetting to take notes. The mainpoints that I remember were Jim havingproblems with Paul Gentilozzi's lack ofdriving etiquette, his comments on the"Jaguar" (Forduar?), and the disappoint-ment of regaining the GTS class lead latein the race, only to have the engine let go!CASC Race Committee:Cindy Armstrong advised members thatthe best time to get up-dates is to visit theClub's Forum in the third week of themonth, as this is just after the most recent

monthly committee meeting. She also re-minded members of the Official's Work-shops in March, and advised members thatconducting sessions in Ottawa would de-pend the number of those interested in at-tending.Race Driver's School:Cindy Armstrong advised that we alreadyhave 8 cheques from prospective studentswithout any formal announcement havingbeen made.

    ing Rules and Regulations, and other in-formation;

a medical will be required; schools will be held in May; there will be unavoidable schedule con-

flicts; there is a need for flaggers and workers

for the events; and there will be Club trophies.Autorama/Speedorama:Bennett Leckie stated that we still need aClub organiser for our display, and thatthe event will be held on April 13th and14th . These dates will cause conflicts,e.g. CASC Spring Fling, which will be aproblem.

Website and Proposed Drag Strip:Rob also gave a brief update on the Clubwebsite, and on the proposed drag strip. The owners are reported to be havingproblems with the City of Ottawa, andwill probably have to find a site outsidethe city. The meeting was adjourned at approxi-mately 9:15 p.m. on a motion by NickBerry, seconded by Steve Greiner.

    March 2002

    MCO Rally GroupNews, March 2002

    by Craig Hamm

Somehow I missed last month's deadlineso there is some catching up to do.

MANY club members have been busy

competing in the highly contested, highlycompetitive Yokohama/Subaru WinterRally Series. This is a 5 rally series thathas been running since about 1999(1998?) and just gets bigger and biggereach year. The rallies run from 400 to 600km in length and run all through the nighton some of the most challenging winterroads you can imagine. Average speedscan reach 72 kph, and if you think that'sslow, think again. Typically the organis-ers have waiting lists after more than 70teams register. This year we have asmany as 8 or so teams from MCO com-

peting in the Novice Class in each rally.

As of this writing Steve Greiner and NickBerry are in 5th place in the Novice cham-pionship after 3 rallies., and MCO hasthree teams in the top 10. Two rallies re-main: the Frostbite March 1 and 2, somesleep, then the Ontario Winter Rally runsMarch 2 and 3, both out of Kingston. Seehttp://www.kwrc.on.ca/events/yokohama-series/index.html

Our last club rally was Jim Morrow's'Lanark Highlands Winter Rally', on Janu-ary 12, rally #2 in the MCO Rally Cham-

pionship Series. This rally was a hugesuccess for MCO. We had 19 starters (20

registered) well above our expectations, and this was our first night time drivexrally. For the first time we had communi-cations help via HAM radio operatorswhich aided in early scoring and lookingfor lost souls. Bennett Leckie and PatWeightman drove course opening, sansodometer, and Steve Bettles with his fa-ther ran a sweep vehicle. This was a wellorganised event, helping us to prepare forour own Yokohama Event sometime downthe road. Your's truly finally came first ina rally, in Expert category, followed close-ly (0.6 minutes) by Tim Burrell and VijayPereira (winners of the Lanark rally in Oc-tober). In third place Expert were JodieShay and Sonya Howard close behind. Then there are those cheeky Novices.

Novice drivers Ryan Huber, Warren Hay-wood, and Ken Baird all beat the Ex-

perts!! Ryan has since joined the club sothat his top finish can count towards hischampionship bid. Results should be

posted in the Link, and they are availableon the website.

Greg Brady and Steve Frankovitch com-peted in the 2nd round of the 2002 Cana-dian Rally Championship (Rallye Perce-

Neige, Maniwaki) on February 23 in theirRideau Lakes Racing Impreza and came5th (of 16 starters) in the Ontario RegionalPerformance Championship (OPRC) por-tion, first in class P4. For their third ever

performance event, this is a fantastic re-sult! Also, members Steve Rioux andSbastien Cloutier in their P2 Class EagleSummit came 11th (or 21 starters) in theQuebec Regional Event of Perce-Neige.Well done to our active performanceteams! See http://www.lino.com/~rally-

    perceneige/bienvenua.html

The January meeting of the Rally Grouphad yet another record of attendees, at 21or so people! Our Wednesday March 27thmeeting will host Doug Mepham who hasagreed to come and give a full audio-visu-al presentation of his experience in lastyears Targa Tasmania (http://www.tar-ga.org.au/), a historic tarmac rally cover-ing 2000 kilometers over 5 days on the is-land of Tasmania. An event that is limitedto 300 entries! The competition concept is

drawn directly from the best features ofthe Mille Miglia, the Coupe des Alpes andthe Tour de Corse. Doug is also involvedin the organisation of the Targa New-foundland and will be speaking to that aswell. All are invited to attend this specialmeeting.

Our very own Craig Seko (driver) and JimMorrow (co-driver) have been officiallyaccepted in the innaugaural running ofTarga Newfoundland (http://www.targa-newfoundland.com/) being held in Sep-tember. Supporting crew are Jim's wifeand tireless MCO member and volunteer,Jean MacGillivray, and myself. I can'twait for the hill climb up Signal Hill onDay 1!

Jim Morrow and I have begun preparationof our (TSD) Rally Marshaling school andBasic Rally Organiser's Schools, tentative-ly to be held in late March. If you are in-terested in either of these topics, or justwant to get some 'inside knowledge' toimprove your rallying, these courses will

    be of benefit to you.

Come out to the Emerald Plaza Branch ofthe Ottawa Public Library, on MerivaleRoad. We have a great space to hold ourdiscussions, loads of free parking, a mod-erately central location next to many res-

    nett Leckie, Vice-President; Rob Microys,Past President; Bob Benson, Treasurer;

Rick Miskiman, Open Wheel; SteveGreiner, Closed Wheel; Craig Hamm, Ral-ly; Pat Weightman, Membership; JeffGraves, Solo I; Greg Kierstead, Solo II;Richard Muise, Link Editor: John Powell,Secretary.

Members/Guests: Bob Armstrong, Chief In-structor, Winter Driving and Racing Driv-ers' Schools; Jean MacGillivray, Speedor-ama Display Material; Andre Julien, MiataClub.

    ABSENT WITH EXCUSES:Executive: Basil Chiu, Public Relations;

    Paul Swinwood, Karting.

The President opened the meeting at 7:00p.m., and the following business was dis-cussed:

New Meeting Time:The President proposed that the starting

time for Executive Meetings be moved for-ward to 6:30 p.m. due to the quantity of

business presently to be dealt with eachmonth. Approved..

Winter Driving School:There were several areas of detailed discus-sion as follows:- Postponement or cancellation of the Feb.

23rd school is dependent on the weather. The track will be checked on the Thursdayevening before the event, and decisionmade then. Those concerned will be ad-vised if it's a no-go, and the Hot-Line will

be up-dated for those who call in.- Bennett Leckie stated that he and Herb

Henning are not that pleased with the con-dition of the track after the Solo events. He said that their post-event groomingshould be done the same day. Bob Arm-strong asked about the agreement with theWinter Solo organisers regarding thetrack, and a general discussion ensued re-viewing the points, and the impacts of los-

ing a dedicated worker such as Herb.- Ron Woltman noted that Herb's efforts aregreatly appreciated, and this fact must bemade known to him.

Related to the school, a complaint has beenreceived regarding insufficient time forworker lapping. In a general discussion, thefollowing points were raised:- Bob Armstrong noted that the track was

generally available for lapping up until8:30 a.m., and then from 12:00 noon until12:50 p.m..

    - Ron Woltman added that as much time aspossible was given, weather and track per-mitting, to which Richard Muise, who su-

pervises the sessions, added that the noonsessions are not exactly over-used.

    - someone suggested that there may be aneed for a workers' and instructors' lap-

ping evening, to which Pat Weightmanadded that he was thinking of using thetrack on Feb. 27th as a birthday gift tohimself, and would welcome some compa-

ny.- Ron suggested that interested partiesshould discuss the matter with himself orBennett, if Pat is willing to organise somelapping. Workers and Instructors would

be free, and for others the fee would be$20. Solo II rules, e.g. helmets, would ap-

ply.- Jean MacGillivray closed the discussion by

stating that most workers know and acceptthe limitations on lapping.

Racing School:- Ron Woltman raised the topic of a lapping

day as discussed in recent e-mails. Hissuggestion was to allow lapping by select-ed individuals for the purpose of being ob-served for reinstatement of their licences.

    - Bob Armstrong commented that hecouldn't see this for schools due to timeconstraints. Observations can be done atraces or lapping/test days. The format willneed to be finalised soon, and will it be 30students and no lapping?

    - Bob Benson asked if there will be a losswith only 30 students, and Bob Armstronggave a run-down of recent estimates, withcosts of about $15,000 and income ofabout $19,500.

    - Bob Armstrong next advised the meetingthat the curriculum has to go to CASC for

approval before the end of February, andhe didn't have a list of qualified instructors

from MCO yet. He also indicated that in-terest has been expressed from instructorsfrom the FAQ, Bridgestone, and othersources.

    - Ron Woltman stated that we will need tocanvas MCO for more instructors, andhave them contact Bob Armstrong, PaulSwinwood, or himself.

    - The question of roll bars for open cars, es-pecially Miatas, was raised by JeffGraves, and Rob Microys informed him

that the requirement was for CASC Solo Iapproved roll bars.- There was a general discussion on having

CASC licenced scrutineers volunteer tolook at students' cars prior to their beingused, and offering advice on correcting

potential problems. A proviso to thiswould be that nothing is to be given inwriting.

    - The topic of giving free lunches to studentswas raised by Rob Microys, and RonWoltman agreed providing it was finan-cially feasible.

    - Bob Armstrong noted that the school is alot of effort for the Club, and if a loss is

projected, we must either increase fees orreduce costs, to which Ron indicated hisagreement.

    - Rob stated that he felt that the image of theClub was involved, and explained that oth-er schools provided a lunch. We couldmake a decision later as funds came in.Rick Miskiman added that the decisioncould wait until 2 weeks before the school,

but Ron stated the he would like a deci-sion before the next Executive meeting.

    - Bob Armstrong closed the discussion bynoting that we must view the school asone event of many. The Canaska Cup isin high risk of showing a loss, and weshould remember that the Racing School

is replacing the Lapping Weekend, whichshowed an acceptable profit in 2001.

Proud sponsor of theMCO Solo-II Timing Board

Canaska Cup:There was a detailed discussion on thisevent, especially regarding financial issues, the highlights of which were:- On entry fees, Ron Woltman and Bob

Armstrong had run test spreadsheets in-volving an increase in entry fees. Nothaving a test day saves us $5724.50, butwith an increase in fees of 20% our losscould still be in the region of $3500. Lat-er in the discussion, Bob pointed out that

an increase in fees will likely mean a re-duction in entries, as people may chooseother events.

    - Ron suggested that we need to examinevarious financial scenarios in order to bet-ter understand possible alternatives. Healso stated that he had approached theother clubs to see if the financial risks can

be shared, but got no positive responses.- The meeting next discussed alternatives,

including cancellation. Rob Microys stat-ed that the track deposit was safe, as wecould always run a Lapping Weekend, butwe will need to determine when to make adecision.

    - Steve Greiner made the point that, in anyevent, we need to address the issue ofpublicity. The meeting then discussedthis topic, including ways to increase paidattendance.

    - Ron Woltman closed discussion on theCanaska Cup by stating that a decision onour course of action must be made within30 days.

Speedorama:- Jean MacGillivray advised that the dates

for this event are April 12th to 14th , andshe still needs information on the differ-ent disciplines and events for Jim Hol-tom's display. This will be done by thenext monthly Club meeting.

    - There will be a need for members to helpwith the Club's display and presentations.Rob Microys will organise the display.

Solo II:The President introduced Greg Kierstead, the new Solo II representative, who then re-

ported as follows:- The Solo II schedule has now been firmed

up, and the possibility of holding a Re-gional event is being looked at.

    - Other clubs have expressed concern re-garding the low turnout of MCO mem-

bers at past Inter Club Challenge events.- The organisation of events will be looked

at with a view to making improvements.- Items needed included a tent or cover, a

walking wheel for measuring courses, anda P.A. system such as bull-horns. RonWoltman advised Greg to get somequotes on a tent.

Treasurer:Bob Benson asked the Officers of the Clubto complete new signing authorities.

Membership:Pat Weightman reported 215 current mem-

bers, with 175 CASC, 85 RSO and 35 Kart-ing affiliations. This was followed by a

discussion on the distribution of affiliationfees.

Club Website:Rob Microys advised members that if theywill provide him with the copy regardingevents, etc., he will publish it on the site.

Rally:- Craig Hamm reported that he had looked

into the insurance questions raised in hisrecent e-mails, and it looks as if we'recovered on those points.

    - There will be a Rally Solo at the WinterDriving School track on Mar. 10th.. Ben-nett Leckie than asked how long had wearranged for the use of the track, and adiscussion ensued on our arrangementwith Capital City, provisions made forlack of snow, and similar matters.

    - Craig next raised the subject of Club rega-

lia, rally 'T' shirts, and the logo. There isa need for someone to look after theseitems, as well as lapel pins, etc..

    - In closing, Craig gave a brief run-downon up-coming rallies, and members activ-ities in preparing for the Targa New-foundland.

The Link:- Richard Muise reminded those present

that the deadline for the March issue of

the Link was Tuesday, February 26th.,and noted that he needed to print morecopies (210 up from 185) as he was fre-quently running short of sponsor andcomp. copies (This is due to the rescentincreases in MCO membership). Ap-

proved.- Richard then advised those present that he

would be retiring as Link editor by Au-gust 2002 at the latest. He then outlinedthe requirements of the position, and stat-ed that he preferred an earlier appoint-ment of a new editor in order to providesome time for transition. It was agreedthat a suitable ad be placed in the Link

and posted on the website.- Ron Woltman then thanked Richard onbehalf of the Club for the outstanding jobthat he had done.

Race and Solo I:These Departments had no business for dis-cussion at present.

The meeting was adjourned approximately9:45 p.m..

    John's new RX-7

    MiscellaneousRumblings IIby John Powell

    1. Judge what? ...

Over the years I've often wondered whatwe have to do to get the press to pay at-tention to road racing, both nationally andregionally. Who amongst us has notsearched in vain for race reports and re-sults in our local papers? Even the motor-ing press pays little attention to regionalroad racing, while covering local shorttrack (oval) events in some detail. Well,in the words of my hero Baldrick, (the"Black Adder" series) "I have a cunning

    plan".

First we have to change the way race fin-ishing positions are determined. Therewill be two criteria; On-track FinishingPosition, determined under the presentsystem, and Driving Style. The latter will

be determined by how artistically a driverperforms in such areas as braking, corner-ing, accelerating and passing, and, whereapplicable, the choreography of his pitcrew. This will require some expertise inthe judging of style, or "artistic impres-sion", and the preferred choice here is ob-vious - we will use judges from the Inter-national Skating Federation. And here isthe cunning part: with these judges, soon-er or later we're bound to have a judgingscandal, and think of all the free publicitywe'll get then!!!!

    2. What did you call me ....?

Another gem from the Ontario Farmer, this from a list of "who really cares" triv-ia.

"A pregnant goldfish is called a 'twit'."Now how many pregnant goldfish do youknow? And I hope I'm not one!

    3. Back In The Saddle - Episode V -Reel 2 - Bringing Home Baby

Now what was our theme here? Oh yes, getting a race car and stuff.

Last month we looked at how to find race

car stuff on the web, and other Dark Arts. This now brings us to our second major"opportunity" - finding safety gear, goodused RWD race cars, and so on, in ourMini-mega city. I won't go into detailhere, as my feelings are expressed in "You(Probably) Can't Get It Here" elsewhere inthis month's column. It seems, though, that Ottawa's ideas of race mods, otherthan maybe shocks and headers, are tintedwindows, wheels in all colours of the rain-

bow, loud mufflers and boom boxes. As ifthe world really needs more humungous

bass speakers with an engine and wheels

attached! Once I realised that I had to goelsewhere, Montreal or the GTA, the prob-lems were easily resolved.

As I could bunk at my sister's in Bramp-ton, I concentrated on making a trip to theGTA. I had previously found an ad (noton the web) for a fully prepared '83 Maz-da RX7 in Mississauga, which was owned

by Paul Taylor. It was a proven class-win-

ner, and I had arranged to meet Paul andsee the car at the CRDA meeting at Shan-nonville in June, 2001. The car was clean, well laid out, and well prepared. The en-gine was bridge-ported (don't ask me, I'mnew to Wankels, and only vaguely under-stand that it improves the breathing or ex-haust scavenging), it had a competitionclutch and limited slip differential, somesuspension mods, and itwas loud! It also had 5extra rims and tires, 4 ofthem almost new raintires. On the track itlooked fast and smooth, and Paul got an easy 3rdin class in the race Iwatched, although I reallythink he wasn't pushing it.Maybe he didn't want to

bend it in front of a pro-spective buyer. I liked it,and there was even agood, one year old, allsteel open-trailer availa-

ble. The price, with thetrailer, was a bit more thanI wanted to pay, but Ithought it was well worthit. Paul had agreed to takea deposit on the car, pending the receipt of

the balance of my RRSP (Registered Rac-er's ... you know) withdrawal, so I had

    bought it.

In the meantime, I searched for safetygear. Ordering on the web was pretty wellout, as helmets are a very individual fit, ascan be shoes and gloves. I could buy mysuit that way, but at the prices today, I fig-ured it would be best to try to get a pack-age deal somewhere for the whole lot. Idid find some race gear suppliers on theweb, and got some price lists, and so on.When the balance of the year's racing

budget came in, I made arrangements for

a giant shopping trip to the GTA at the endof July. I also fitted a class 3 hitch andbrake controller to the pick-up, which, bythe way, I did get locally, but that's notreally specific to racing, is it?

The shopping trip was largely uneventful.I met up with Dave Jameson, an old friendfrom the MGB days, and we picked up thecar and got it to weekend storage at the

plant where he worked. Visits to severalsuppliers produced one, Essex Distribu-tors East, who would give me a package

deal on OMP racewear (I really liked theirsuit) and a Bieffe helmet. There was asmall problem with the helmet, as theywould have to order one in, the one I triedon having been sold. An unexpected ben-efit was that Joe and Sid at Essex were theones who built and originally raced theRX7 I had bought, and would be happy togive us technical advice. There were parts of the trip not to my lik-

ing, however. Due to a shortage in thetime we had to get the car into storage be-fore the plant closed, so we had to take the407 (the Rip-off Road). Also, towing withthe pick-up and its anaemic V6 proved to

be a challenge on any grade greater than 1in 1,000,000! You can bet that I'll havesomething to say on toll roads and thenew "passenger car" pick-ups in future

columns! The up-side, of course, was that,

as the photo below shows, I got "baby"home safe and sound (the front air dam isin the truck), and the trailer itself towedlike a dream. At that point, I looked for-ward to getting in a couple of test days, and with a bit of luck, getting observed formy licence. And maybe a chance to get arace in before the season ended. Oh howwrong I was!

    4. STOP THE PRESSES!!! A MOTORRACING SCANDAL????(This article was found in our local Brit-ish-style tabloid, the Ottawa Moon.)

Are There Dirty Deeds In The Pits? Is AProminent Racing Motorist The Target? We Have Proof!!!!

Our famous investigative reporter, Erichvon Maniken, has uncovered evidence offoul play at a local motor racing event inthe summer of 2001. Readers will re-member Mr. Von Maniken for his startlingdiscovery of ancient Alien landings inToronto. ("Toronto City Hall - two wingsof a crashed Alien Mother Ship?" "TheSpadina Expressway - the road from no-

where to nowhere - was it really a plan-ning error, or the Mother Ship's intendedlanding strip? It points directly to thecrash site - what other explanation couldthere be?") Mr. von Maniken, workingunder cover, has found photographic proofin a recent issue of an eminent motor rac-ing journal, that indeed there was somedirty business afoot in the pits!.

Examine carefully the photograph above -in the foreground is the racing car of theProminent Racing Motorist in question, and in the background is the aged, soiled

pick-up truck of the villain of the piece. This person is a member of THE SAMECLUB, as the Racing Motorist's ARCH-RIVAL! PROOF! We say that all is notabove board! Why else would this vehiclebe in the vicinity? When we trackeddown the miscreant and confronted him,his answer was "It's there because that'swhere I bloody well parked it". A likelystory. When pressed further, he becamebelligerent and replied in a strange accent, reminiscent of Dylan Thomas, "Look, youbloody Saxon barbarian, if you don't bug-ger off and bloody leave me alone, I'll ripyour bloody 'ead off, look you! Who

d'you bloody think you are anyway? Thebloody Prince o' Wales' bloody Feathers?"

And there you have it, dear reader, GUIL-TY by his own word! And why would hereact as he did? Could this strange manalso be an ...

(Story continued inside front cover - nextto the photograph of this month's Moon-shine Woman, the lovely Mosport Minnie.Mini, as she is known to her most intimatefriends, has extensive experience as a PitPopsie, and was a denizen of Corner Two,before the present rather sedate crowd

took over.)(Ed. Note - Many thanks to Karen Holtomfor the use of her photograph).

    5. You (Probably) Can't Get It Here

The last year has taught me that the rac-ing community in the Ottawa area is notall that well served for race car parts, preparation facilities, racing machineshops, and safety gear, amongst otherneeds. Ferreting around here for suppliers

of safety gear and racing bits, other thanstuff for street mods, was a real chore. And judging by some of the posts on theClub Forum over the last few months re-garding, as a couple of examples, chassisprep and custom exhaust pipe bending,I'm not the only one having problems. The tip I got for local suppliers of usedRX7 parts and (possibly) one of the spe-cial oils I need, actually came from anRX7 racer and a racing supplier in theGTA! The used oil cooler I bought atRX7 Heaven is, as of this date, the onlyracing part I need that I have found in theOttawa area.

Perhaps I was led to expect more with allthe hype about this city being the nation's"4th largest metropolitan area". But witha population of only 750,00 the new Otta-wa is a long way from being a large city, except, of course, in area. Some wouldargue that the metro area includes Hulland the Outaouais, but that's not reallyfair. If we get to count Hull and environs, then Windsor gets to count Detroit, and Ft.

Erie gets to count Buffalo (don't laugh - Ihear that Buffalo has improved a lot in re-cent years). Why? Well taking Wind-sor/Detroit as an example, from someknowledge of the business between thetwo, I would guess that there's more localcommuter, commercial and personal traf-fic between them in one month than be-tween Ottawa and the Hull area in oneyear. If I remember correctly, this wouldmake Windsor/Detroit the 5th largest met-ropolitan area, not just in Canada, but inall of North America! And ahead of thenewly amalgamated Metro Toronto too,for the amusement of anyone who doesn't

    like The Big Smoke.

What to do about Ottawa, then. Frankly, Idon't know. Perhaps we should pestersuppliers here to expand their offerings, orwrite to distributors and bug them aboutappointing dealers in our area. The otherchoices are web or mail-order, or to hit the4 lanes and head down to Montreal or Tor-onto, or even south of the border. Butthen, when you look at the location ofsome Ontario suppliers, e.g. SimpsonRacing in Waubaushene, of all places, itmakes you wonder. There is one thing wemight consider doing, and that's for MCO

members to get together and compile a di-rectory of resources and suppliers in theOttawa area. This would be for the use ofthose of us involved in race, rally and so-lo. In the final analysis, though, perhapsOttawa is just a true reflection of Canada -a small population in a large land area, where most people have to go somewhereelse to get what they need, if it's a littleout of the ordinary. Waubaushene? It's asmall sport fishing and resort town at thesouth end of Georgian Bay, about 20 milesnorth west of Orillia.

    6. Oops!... Or ... Oh, the ignominy of itall!

At the February 9th Winter DrivingSchool, I decided to do a few laps at lunchtime to keep the old reflexes warmed up,and to have some fun. Now as many of ushave discovered, the Out-house Turn onthe Tree Line course can be a bit tricky. After negotiating it successfully five orsix times though, and at a decent speed(for the pick-up), I got a wee bit over-con-fidant and "experienced an under-steertendency in the non-linear handling re-gime", to borrow a phrase. This resultedin my joining another member of the Ex-ecutive in what could be called the"kissing the snow-bank" club. The resultsof this were a mixed blessing.

Now my kiss was not exactly a passionateembrace, just a friendly peck on thecheek, but the result was a fractured frontbrake line. Aside from the inconvenience, this resulted in the embarrassing spectacleof having to get towed away in front of all

and sundry. It also resulted in an unwel-come repair bill of $143.00. On the posi-tive side, there was the fact that the prob-lem happened in a controlled environ-ment, there was a phone handy to get atow-truck, it was a Saturday and I couldget it fixed, and they managed to get itdone before closing time. This meant Ididn't have to worry about getting home asthere's no OC Transpo out on the conces-sions. The big plus, however, involvedthe fact that when they took the old brakeline off, it came away in three pieces! Theline was so rotten that the slight bump inthe snow bank split it open! What if I'd

hit a pothole on the 417 going home thatday? Which goes to prove that, even if atfirst it's hard to see the silver lining, if youlook at the cloud long enough, you'll findit.

    7. Parting Shot

Now that I have an RX7, I'm going tohave to learn something about Wankel en-gines. Did you know that Pratt & Whit-ney once tried to develop a Wankel aeroengine? It wasn't practical. Anyway, itwas once explained to me that a Wankel istheoretically a 2 stroke. But with what a 4

stroke does in 4 reciprocal motions, and a2 stroke does with 2, a Wankel does with1 revolution, so you could say that aWankel is actually a 1 stroke. On secondthought, though, with three firing impuls-es per revolution, maybe it's a 1 and stroke! Think about it!

    THE PRESIDENT'S

    REPORT

One of the tasks set for the OntarioRace Organizing Committee(ORO) last month, on which I sitas your representative, was to re-view entry fees for 2002. We havedone so. The revised entry fees arestill subject to ratification and pos-sible revision (revolt) as clubsawait the insurance rate increasefor 2002. However, the ORO feltas a group entry fee increases wereinevitable.

Before announcing (see below) theproposed new entry fees, a bit ofbackground is in order. First, vir-

tually all Ontario organizing clubslost money in 2001, including TheMotorsport Club of Ottawa. Costsfor hosting a race have crept up-wards like old underwear: ambu-lance, track rental and of course, much dreaded other shoe - a largeincrease in insurance rates. Notonly that, but entry fees have re-mained unchanged for the past fewseasons. While clubs absorbedfewer entrants and higher costs! And while some clubs - including

perhaps MCO - can sustain a one-time loss, it certainly is not the phi-losophy of this executive to do soon a regular basis. If we go 'out ofbusiness'; well so do the racers!

Each club must stickhandle widelydiffering circumstances in staginga race weekend. Each club adoptstheir own techniques to ensure asuccessful weekend. We enjoy thebenefits at SMP of gate receipts, not to mention the prerogative of

setting the number of passes allot-ted to each team. Clubs hosting aMosport weekend do not have thatlatitude.

The reason I raise this is that whileORO agreed to allot one (1) freepass per team, MCO can steer amore munificent course, by uppingthat number, boosting the attrac-tiveness to competitors of ourevent.

I suppose it is clear by now thatMCO is again planning to host ourrace weekend (June 22-23/02) atSMP. And entry fees have gone up(see below). The executive and therace committee feel strongly thatthis enormous effort of staging aregional race weekend is worth theblood, sweat and tears. We did afine job last year (we earned thebest-organized event award of2001), and we are striving to sur-pass last year's effort. And we

    shall.

We are honing our pencils to a ra-zor-sharp point to find ways of re-ducing our overhead. Unfortunate-

ly, one key area ripe for paring isaccommodations - a costly enter-prise for the club last year. We areconsidering accommodations (orsubsidized if possible); but no ac-commodations if entries and in-come inhibit. Personally, I em-

brace the notion of housing, water-ing and feeding the troops in amanner keeping with which theyare wholly unfamiliar - at least at aracetrack. However, in the shadowof economic turbulence and fewerentries, we need to cut where wecan. Believe me, though, if we fur-nish a place to rest your wearyheads, we will.

    Price structure as below (taken

    from CASC bulletin, February 27,2002):

    Sprint $280.00Ontario F1600 Championship $300.00OCC $350.00OSS $380.00 *CGTCC $480.00 **One day entry $210.00Second entry $200.00

    Neat Stuff At Sam'sHouse #5

    by Sam Mandia

Do you remember when you wereable to find prizes in the" CrackerJack" boxes? Not to mention allthe neat stuff in the cereal boxes?

Well, back I began racing in thelate seventies, the Car Clubs gaveout "dash plaques". Mementos ofeach race weekend with the placeand date of the event. Made ofplastic or metal with adhesive onthe back, they were mounted asthe name implies on your dash-board of your car. Key fobs, glassbeer mugs, buttons/pins, coins, small plaques, and even t-shirts orhats were handed out at Registra-

tion. Liz Dorey was always thereto help out, and keep things mov-ing. I really miss her smile andgood nature. Many times shebrought me trophies and awards tothe track (even the next year) afterI had either missed or forgottenabout them. The reason I keep allthis stuff is simple. Every time

you or I go onto the race track wecreate history that no one can takeaway or erase, the results last for-ever.

Various dash plaques, with dates ranging from 1956 through to the 1990's

    Editor Wantedby Richard Muise

The Link newsletter is looking for a neweditor. The current editor is looking tomove on to new projects, and would like tohave the transfer completed no later thanafter the publication of the August 2002 is-

sue. This gives 6 months at the most tohelp get the new editor up to speed.

The main job of the editor includes:- asking the MCO executive and other

members for submissions- proof reading submissions- sizing and scaling submissions and fitting

them into the page templates for each is-sue. This includes documents and pic-tures (which may require some additionalpreening in a graphics program).

    - Compiling the individual page templatesinto a single PDF file for printing or web.

    - Sending the print job, possibly proofing

the draft print at the printers and pickingup the completed job the day of theMCO general meeting.

    - giving monthly updates at both generaland executive meetings

A single person can handle the job of edi-tor, but there are others willing to help invarious capacities. They are willing to helpin such roles as proof reading or they canhelp in the creation of ads or other inserts. It would behoove the editor to use thesevolunteer resources as it can certainly helpcut down the amount of time spent prepar-

ing the Link each month.Additional work includes mailing the Link(stuffing envelopes, attaching the mailinglabel and return address), but this can alsobe easily off-loaded or delegated.

The Link is created in Adobe Illustrator. The native file format is PDF, which iseasy to use for proofing and later conver-sion for the Web version. Training will be

given if you are not already familiar withthis program. Most work is quite simple, past ing t ex t o r p ic ture s and resi zing orchanging the font and font-style, wrappingtext around pictures, etc. You will not berequired to learn to be a graphics artist, just some simple tools in a layout program.

The only requirement is a PC with Win-

dows 95 or better (isn't everything?) and afew hundred megabytes of free disk space.Approximately 128MB of RAM is a goodstarting point, and the more the computerhas, the better the performance. It is possi-ble to work on a Macintosh as well (part ofthis issue was created in the 30-day trialversion of Illustrator 10.0 for MacOSX),but the MCO license is for the PC versionof Illustrator.

Along with the copy of Illustrator, the edi-tor will receive Adobe Photoshop Ele-ments, a SCSI scanner and Zip drive and aSCSI controller for both. Or you can use

your current PC peripherals if you wish(the current editor has an all USB set upshared between the PC and Mac).

The month begins after the previous issuehas been delivered to the post office. Startby asking around for submissions, espe-cially during the summer race season, asmany authors will need more time to pre-pare articles if they have a full race sched-ule. This is also a good time to start pre-paring the template pages including chang-ing the dates and finding out how muchfree space is available. As each submissioncomes in, proof read it and find out howmuch space it requires by placing it intoone of the page templates.

At the executive meeting, give a quicksummary of what's happening with theLink, ask for submissions (well, pesterreally) and take notes of changes to theschedules or ads for MCO events. Duringthe final week of each month start the finalpast ing up o f the copy. I f you know the

sizes of all the articles you can start to fthe best fit for the articles. Add pictuand work on the cover shots. The Link should be submitted for printthe Friday morning before the genemeeting, but can be slipped into as lateMonday if required (call the printer aheof time). So the final version should

complete Thursday night with a quick fiproof Friday morning. Compile the 6 topage templa tes i nto a single PDF usiAcrobat and send to the printer. Currenthe Link uses Dollco Dig ital just off Laurent Bvld. Dollco will usually havprint proof ready to review Monday, aonce approved they will print 210 copovernight ready for pick up Tuesday aftnoon.

At the general meeting, hand out the coies (this is where you really get to knmembers), give another quick summarythe members (or apologize if the Link

late). Over the next few days, stuff the maining Links into envelopes and takethe post office for mailing.

    Rinse and begin again.

Details on the current layouts used suchthe font types and sizes have already bedocumented.

The change over will need to be complebefore the September 2002 issue at the est, but can be earlier than that if you quite keen. This wil l al low at mosmonths for the switch over and training.

This is a great opportunity to get to knpeople in MCO and other clubs locally aotherwise. The people you meet are best part of working on the Link. Adtionally, you have a part in how the histof the club is recorded for the 100th anversary book...
