Introduction

I chose to go St. Xavier because they offered me a scholarship. I was looking at other colleges, but my teacher told me that it was a great university to go to. So I fol-lowed her advice and the scholar-ship did help to bring me in as well. I have enjoyed myself at St. Xavier and have recently won two more scholarships last spring. I hope to continue to excel here and be groomed to make my way into the world of Graphic Design.

My art background started with the basics of drawing. My mother and father were both artist, so I guess it was my genes. The greatest thing about art, in my opinion, is the ability to see how a person views the world through their expression. This is what I learned from my mother, what true art was really about. When I went to Olive-Harvey, I was then exposed to Graphic Design. My favorite program became illustrator because of my drawing background. I

would scan my pictures in, trace and apply different effects to them. I then later began to get a better understand-ing of photoshop at St. Xavier which wasn’t as complicated as I thought. I have also taken a drawing class at St. Xavier to help polish my skills in drawing to make better Graphic Design work. Going forward I want to learn as much as I can to show the expression and influence that resides around me.

I look forward to my time at SXU to keep the passion that I have for art going. I also take responsibility in knowing that it is up to me to maintain the burn-ing of that flame/passion, so that I may reach my potential. I look not to be an over-night success, but a work in progress striving to achieve excellence. In loving God I know my life is not my own; I hope to be an inspiration to others as much as they will be to me.

The Jars of 3The piece that I will discuss is the jar created out of 3s. What I used was a jar from class filled with what looked like cherries. First I selected the brush tool to draw the jar. I then picked my color from the color picker, starting with the color black. I used the number three because there were three colors on the jar. I used the bamboo tablet stylus to create the 3s in different sizes. I used the color black to describe the label. I then went back to the color picker and chose red to represent the cherries. After finishing those parts I chose the gold color to represent the top or lid for the jar. I used the layer option after I finished to demon-strate how many steps it took to make this jar.

The first thng that caught my eye about this piece was the gold lid because the color is more vibrant than others. The red and black form layers of color representing the cherries and the jar label. The opening midway in the black provides a window for whats inside it. The red kind of makes the content more important to me than the jar itself.

The concept for this piece was to make an object out of lines, numbers, or signatures. The trick was to not make a blatant outline of the object but to fill it out so that it appears as the object as much as possible.

The MacThis picture composed of circles is an abstract design of the Mac monitor. The thick black circles represent the outlining of the moni-tor. The thinner circles are the screen, which gives the picture a more lighter feel as the eyes go inside of the

Lined MouseThis mouse was created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools used for this object was the pen tool and the color picker. Also the points option which enlarged every line that I made with the pen tool.

I started at the top of the mouse to get the blue color it had. I used he pen tool to create curvy lines that would define the shape of its top half. I also did the same for its black bottom. In each section I also made lines going

in the opposite direction to make the mouse appear in motion. I also used a larger black line that is protrud-ing out of the mouse to represent the chord that attaches in the back of the computer.

The concept for this object was to make an accurate recreation of the mouse that I was using for the com-puter. I needed to use line work to convey the shape of the overall shape.

A Lysol Full Words

This piece was done in Illustrator. I used the word Lysol to create the container that the wipes are in. For each word I copied and pasted it to created the rect-angular shape. I used different lines to create the wipe that protrudes out of the container.

The first thing that caught my attention, was the yellow Lysol words. The blue Lysol actually provides some contrast, representing the title of the actual wipe’s

can. Lastly was the actual wipe (tisue) that I would have sticking out of the con-tainer. I put the lines in to show wrinkles and slight folding inside of wipe.

The concept was to create a Lysol wipes bottle with the actual word Lysol. I needed to fill out the shape as much as possible and the negatives spaces to ac-curately capture the object.

Swaying Bottles

These bottles were created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools that were used was the pen tool, the color picker and also the point option.

I used the pen tool to create many lines to make an object that looked like a bottle. I also used lines going vertical to create some motion within the bottles. I actually made the bottles crooked on accident, but it actu-

ally came out better than what I previously wanted. In In-Design the drop shadow ef-fect to the bottles to amplify the movements of the bottles.

The concept was to make a bottle out of line work. The goal was to make it as realistic as possible, but I think it went a little into the abstract.

These variations were created in Illustrator. The tools used in this process was the brush tool, the color

picker, and the filter gallery.

The idea was to create an object filling in the shapes with color based the light-ing. So for instance, I created a candle stick and filled in the shading according to how it was lit. Then after the object was completely filled in I used different filters to create different variations. None of the variations look the same so were to push the limits of how the shapes would turn out.

Some of the variations looked out of con-trol almost sctretching out and some came out more circular. The one I like the most in the candle series is the first one because it seems to be in movement . The lines seem to move and create a 3-D like quality to it.

The concept was to create objects as ac-curately as possible according to the light that caused different shades to appear. The second half was to create 5 variations in to-tal of each. This would allow us to see how the filters would react as we used them on differently.

The Morphing Mp3

“The Morphing MP3” was created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools that were used were the brush tool, the color picker, and the filter.

The guidelines was to create an object thta was a identical as possible to the mp3. First, I used four red colored line to provide a boundary for the height and width of the piece. Second with many strokes I used the red color to define the tone of the mp3. I used lighter and darker shades of red to define the shadows that were cast upon the object I was

using. I used the white line work to create the crossed shape buttons that provide the menu for playing the mp3. Lastly, I used light strokes of gray to represent the screen. The original (left) was then changed into completely different shapes using the filter tool.

The goal was to make an mp3 and change it with filters to se how the designs would effect them.

Crazed PotsThis piece was created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools that were used were the brush tool, the color picker, and the filter.

The Pots were created using orange and red linework. I then continued to color in the shapes. I purposely left some blank to see how the filters would change the

original object I had. The filter changed the original into many dif-ferent shapes.

The goal was to create as many filters from the original as possible. The filters would then create many more interesting varia-tions of the object.

The “Shaded Modems” was created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools that were used were the brush tool, the color picker, and the filter.

The original (top left) was created with thick lines filling out the shape for the modem. I used the light grey on the mid to bottom half and in streaky line work at the top to reflect the light that fell upon the modem. the darker shades of grey depict the darker shades that light fell the least upon. I also used different greens to show the activity of the modem. The lighter grens show that an

operation is taking place and the darker greens represent no activity. I also used different filters to give the modems different colors and looks. I have to say my favorite is the red one it reminds me of pixilated Nintendo games. The colors of red and orange with the pixelated texture just gives the modem an interesting look.

The concept was to create a modem from linework. Also we wanted to see how the filters would change or effect the original object.

Bottle and Bowl

The “Bottle and Bowl” was created in Adobe Illustrator. The tools that were used were the brush tool, the color picker, and the filter.

I used dark shades of green lines to fill out the shape of the bottle. I used the lightest shade of green to show where exactly the lights hit on the bottle. The midtone green lines were used to fill out the bowl. Also the lighter and darker greens were used show where the light hit the bowl. I then used different filters to see how they would

effect the original objects that I made. My favorite filtered image is the one at the bottom because it looks like I’m look-ing at the two objects through a blured window. The colors seem to run together as if looking through a foggy window-pane.

The concept was to depict the bottle and bowl as accurate as possible. Secondly, the goal was to make filters to see how the objects would be tranformed, to create new works of art.

The background picture was taken in the early morning on the beach by Lake Shore Drive. It was a calm morning and I thought that I should take a picture to capture that mo-ment. The bottom Illustrations were traced with the pen tool, filled in with the eye dropper tool (picking up the color from the photo) and mesh tool.

The key to making a recreation of a picture in Illustrator is mak-ing sure you keep everything in layers so the picture can remain organized. I say this because it is very easy to get lost while you are tracing the many variations of clouds or whatever you are tracing. The next thing is making sure you work from the back-ground to the foreground. If you don’t then unnecessary hours will be wasted trying to capture small details that are already overlapped by a larger layer. I used the pen tool to carefully trace the shape of the many clouds that were present. Who knew clouds would be so difficult to capture WHEW LOL!!!!! I used the eye dropper to grab the the color from the original picture.

The difficulties came with the clouds with different variations in them, so I used the mesh tool to grab a lighter color to lay on top of the darker colors blending them. Next I moved to the mid background under the clouds and above the sea. I used the same mesh tool technique to get the variation in the sky so it wouldn’t look like a a very darkgreen. The water was also tricky because I tried different variations to get the best reproduction of it, but ultimately the best bet for me was to use the mesh tool to get a better variation as the light shined on the water.

The concept was to recreate a photo we had taken so that we could recreate it in Illustrator. Also we were able to see how all the tools combined could create a pretty accurate reproduction. Doesn’t seem possible at first, but it all works well together to re-create different scenes.

The Coming Of Morning

The CalmThis piece “The Calm” is a reproduction of the original pic-ture I had done. This reproduc-tion was done in Photoshop. I used the filters to change the whole picture giving it a grainy look. I call it named “The Calm”

“This reproduction displays a very quiet, relaxing event.”

picture this because of the soft lighting the filter put onto the reproduction. This reproduction displays a very quiet, relaxing event. It is a very soothing piece, that I enjoyed creating.

Packaging Dawn“Packaging Dawn” was created from the original with Photoshop filters. The filter, as you can see, put a plastic like sheen onto the picture. This s why I used the word packag-ing. I thought what if I could

“I thought what if I could actually package the real dawn that I witnessed at Lake Shore and send it to someone.”

actually package the real dawn that I witnessed at Lake Shore and send it to someone. Not just having a picture, but the real thing. It would be an experience on a whole other level.

The Beauty Of Earth

How beautiful the earth isWith its peaks and valleys, highs and lows

Such is life when you step from the wombs doorBoth divine masterpieces, but equally as fragile

For beauty is only surface deepIt only can survive by who we are and what we speak

Deep inside lies troubled fault linesGrinding against one another

Memories of plates shifting from past trialsAll the while, surfacing as mountains of testimony

Carving forests of feelingsProviding each human their own distinction

Look how beautiful the earth isBut adjust your eyes from outward perspectives

And allow the mind to internalizeThe earth as your own introspection

Look beyond your own surfaceBecause there everything seems right

Just as sure as day reigns surely There rises the night

Self examine those peaks and valleysSo beauty is not just outward

But also inward that we all may see the light

It could be the yellow huesFloating in a syringe

Full of cocaineOr it could be the addiction

To painNot necessarily sado-masochistic

But the mental state thatThe only way you can get love

WarDestroys

War of the mind War among people

War with selfNothing is left

Warring with destinyIt seems fate is testing us

To decide whether,We want to destroy our past self

Or destroy any hopeOf becoming a better

Something elseI say something else

Because the future seeems To hide in stealth

Therefore we cannot identify itFor what it may be

But it may be that our beingWill become better

But we digress to warFighting against what we are

What we will be And what we were

Who likes pain, nobody doesBut pain

Is the wake up call From a stale stagnant slumber

War of the mind War among people

War with selfNothing is left

How much time is leftWith our poisonings and warrings

With selfOur world is on fire

But what will remainEver constant the clock is ticking

Reminding us that time is of the essenceThe evidence of past painsCan no longer be presentA change is surely near

How many of us will adhereAs the past fades and the future appears

Presently which choice willWe hold dearTick tick tick

The clock racesWe sit with a mental pencilAs our mind takes the test

Questions on the choices of our lifeWe must answer with our best

Which will we decideTo be more or less
