Tuesday 7th & Wednesday 8th May @ 8.00pmRocks’n’RosesEstablished in September 2012 at Rock Rose House in Castlebar, Rocks’n’Roses is a choir for people that have had a cancer diagnosis. The members of the choir are from all around County Mayo, and they come together every Wednesday to practise, guided by their Musical Director, Belcarra native Kathy Fahey. In the short time of being together, the choir has covered many genres, and from this Kathy

has picked a collection of songs that are lively, easy to sing along with and, most of all, fun. Special guests appearing on both nights will include the Mayo Gospel Choir. This will be the first time that Rocks’n’Roses has performed in front of an audi-ence, and by doing so, the members will ably demonstrate how they have grown in confidence, and also prove that life can be good after a serious illness, gaining new energy and new friends along the way.

Thursday 9th May @ 3.00pmThe Sapphires Australia 2012 103 mins Certificate: PGInspired by a true story, The Sapphires is a musical comedy-drama that follows four vivacious, young and talented Aborigi-nal Australian girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war. Set at the height of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement and brimming with Motown hits, this portrait of a late 1960s girl group - Australia’s answer to The Supremes - is a celebration of great music and triumph in the face of adversity after the foursome are discovered one night in a dusty outback tavern by talent scout Dave (Chris O’Dowd). Di-rected by Wayne Blair and based on the hit stage play by Tony Briggs, whose mother and three aunts formed the real-life singing quartet, The Sapphires is an effervescent, irresistible crowd-pleas-er, with plenty of sass to go along with its fully earned sentiment.

Saturday 25th MayBarbershop Singing CompetitionsBarbershop music, with its close, unaccompanied four-part har-monies and ringing chords, originated in the US in the 19th cen-tury - initially in barbershops, which served as places of socialising particularly by African Americans. Since then the form has crossed cultures and become an internationally recognised style of singing. As part of the Mayo International Choral Festival (May 23rd-26th, www.mayochoral.com), the Linenhall is hosting two Barbershop competitions, which are open to the public, and which offer a re-ally enjoyable introduction to the world of barbershop singing.

Part of a hard-living commu-nity of marginalised outsiders, she inhabits an imaginary world of rising waters and strange prehistoric beasts, while the realities of storms and rising levees work their infl uence on their fragile exis-tence and call for more positive action. Calling to mind both the experience of Hurricane Katrina and ecological disaster, director Benh Zeitlin’s debut feature presents a fable that is both magical and poetic. Wednesday 29th May @ 8.00pmColm Naughton - The Space Between the Notes Colm Naughton is a renowned banjo and mandolin player from Creggs in northeast Galway. He spent a number of years playing in Galway as a session musician and has toured Ireland, the US and Europe with various groups, including String Company, Fuaim Chonamara and John Beag Ó Flátharta. Currently, Colm can be seen playing regularly as a two-piece with Matt Keane. The album The Space Between the Notes is Colm’s first solo venture and is mainly Irish traditional, with driving reels, laid-back barn dances and lilting jigs, but also dips into other cultures for a set of Spanish muñeiras here or an American folk song there, plus two of his own compositions. For this night of music and song to celebrate the release of the CD, Colm will be joined by Finbarr Naughton (fiddle) and Pat Coyne (guitar), plus guest singers Matt and Orlaith Keane.“I’ve always known Colm as a very accomplished and versatile ban-jo and mandolin player. On this recording, his playing is, as always, rich, full bodied and full of heart.... I hope that his recording capti-vates other listeners as much as it has done me.” - Máirtín Ó Connor

It’s October 1978 and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town, but a five-mile walk is no joke when you have to do it in a pair of women’s shoes. Come with Pat on this hilarious journey as he walks from his wee white cottage to town and back again. “Today is be-ginning to feel very special and I’ve no idea why”. It’s a charm-ing encounter - an ageing man still with a boundless enthusiasm for life. Mikel Murfi is an award-winning actor, director and play-wright who has regularly appeared at The Abbey and The Gate, and was a founding member of the acclaimed Barrabbas… The Company. Thursday 20th June @ 8.00pmMick O’Brien, Emer Mayock & Aoife Ní Bhriain - Tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts Top Traditional musicians Mick O’Brien (uilleann pipes/flute/whis-tle), Mayo’s own Emer Mayock (flute/whistle) and Aoife Ní Bhriain (fiddle) recently released a CD entitled Tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts (www.claddaghrecords.com), featuring repertoire drawn from original sources collected by Canon James Good-man in the mid-19th century in his native province of Munster. The manuscripts, held in the Library of Trinity College, provide unique insights into the evolution of Irish traditional music and preserve much of the music of the south of Ireland as it was sung and played in the years before traditional culture there was devas-tated by the Great Famine of the 1840s. From these manuscripts, Mick, Emer and Aoife have chosen music ranging from unusual versions of tunes in the modern repertoire to those apparently unique to the collection. A night of great music on the cards. This performance is funded by Arts Council Touring.

Friday 3rd - Saturday 25th MayBea Last - AmorphousAn exhibition of large-scale paintings by Scottish-based artist Bea Last in which the artist explores her relationship to paint, its applications and dynamics. She works with “the processes of addition and subtraction, movement, memory and energy”, while evolving a series of paintings concurrently. Sketch books are a vital part of her creative process, “allowing freedom of mark making without self-consciousness. The fl uid energy cre-ated through these drawings are crucial to my practice and help me stay connected to the paintings that I am working on, helping to move them forward in their development. By focus-ing on the abstract and eliminating the fi gurative or narrative I am trying to capture the beauty in not necessarily the unseen but that which perhaps sometimes we are too busy to see.”Since 1999, Bea Last has exhibited in Scotland, England, Leba-non, France, Italy and the US.

Friday 31st May - Saturday 29th JuneJohn McNulty - Tractors and BarnsAn exhibition of rural imagery by award-winning Mayo-based artist John McNulty. “This exhibition is a selection of my paintings and etchings from the last four or fi ve years. The themes are rural with images of barns, farms and tractors. The source of the work is South Mayo where I live, and the Midlands where I spent some of my youth. The approach varies from realistic to more abstracted pieces.” He continues, “My work explores images of rural life and the changing circumstances of the West of Ireland. I would hope that the images would evoke echoes in people’s minds of a quality in rural life that has changed almost imperceptibly. The intention is not to approach the theme in a nostalgic way but to search for strong, evocative, sometimes playful ideas.” John’s work has been exhibited internationally since 1979 and is in nu-merous public and private collections. Friday 2nd - Saturday 31st AugustRuth Pettus - To Market, To MarketAn unusual, engaging and evocative exhibition of shoe sculp-tures by New Zealand-born artist Ruth Pettus, inspired by the Linenhall’s former existence as the original marketing area for the sale of fl ax grown in Mayo during the 18th and 19th centuries. As Ruth explains, “The shoes can be seen to represent the individu-als and groups of people jostling, conversing and travelling within the market area. The different textures and directions of the shoes refl ects a commercial hubbub of sorting, selling and buy-ing that would have most likely been enjoyed as a break from the daily routine. Most of these shoes were made at my brother’s house in County Galway from 2009-2012.” She continues, “I have been working in this medium for 20 years. The ‘shoes’ are reminis-cent of unearthed objects, damaged leftovers, fossils, narratives, the buried. They become an amalgamation of past and pres-ent.” Ruth Pettus is an Anglo-American artist living in Baltimore, Maryland. Saturday 18th - Saturday 25th MayDrawing on the Back of an EnvelopeWe’ve all heard the expression ‘drawn up on the back of an envelope’ to describe the act of pinning down the spark of an idea. The act of drawing itself is generally seen as a fi rst step in the process of making visual art, whether it’s for painting, sculp-ture, installation, animation or many other forms - it’s how we can start the creative process. And as well as being a step-off point, for visual artists it can also be an end in itself. Drawing on the Back of an Envelope is an exhibition devised by visual artist and curator Ian Wieczorek that invites people to literally make a drawing on the back of an envelope. Something inspiring, something playful, something inventive… the results of this invita-tion are on show for you to enjoy in this celebration of the act of drawing as a source of creative inspiration.
