    4. 37

    + x = 177

    Subtracting 37

    from both sides, we get

    ⇒ 3 – 7 7

    3 + x = 17 3– 7 7

    ⇒ x = 17 – 37

    = 147

    = 2

    ∴ x = 2 5. 6x = 12 Dividing both sides by 6, we get

    66x = 12

    6

    ∴ x = 2

    6. 5t = 10

    Multiplying both sides by 5, we get

    × 55

    t = 10 × 5

    ∴ t = 50

    7. 23x = 18

    Multiplying both sides by 3, we get

    ⇒ 2 × 33

    x = 18 × 3

    ⇒ 2x = 54

    3

    Dividing both sides by 2, we get

    22x = 54

    2

    ∴ x = 27

    8. 1.6 = 1.5y

    Multiplying both sides by 1.5, we get

    1.6 × 1.5 = 1.5y × 1.5

    ∴ y = 2.4 9. 7x – 9 = 16 Adding 9 to both sides, we get ⇒ 7x – 9 + 9 = 16 + 9 ⇒ 7x = 25

    ⇒ x = 257

    ∴ x = 257

    10. 14y – 8 = 13 Adding 8 to both sides, we get ⇒ 14y – 8 + 8 = 13 + 8 ⇒ 14y = 21

    ∴ y = 2114

    = 32

    11. 17 + 6p = 9 Subtracting 17 from both sides, we get ⇒ 17 – 17 + 6p = 9 – 17

    4

    ⇒ 6p = – 8

    ⇒ p = –86

    ∴ p = – 43

    12. 3x + 1 = 7

    15

    Subtracting 1 from both sides, we get

    3x + 1 – 1 = 7

    15 – 1

    ⇒ 3x = 7 1–

    15 1

    ⇒ 3x = 7 – 15

    15 = –8

    15

    Multiplying both sides by 3, we get

    15 × 3

    ∴ x = –85

    Exercise 2.2

    Q.1. If you subtract 12

    from a number and multiply the result

    by 12

    , you get 18

    . What is the number?

    Ans. Let x be the number. As per condition :

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    5

    1 – 2 2

    x⎛ ⎞⎜ ⎟⎝ ⎠

    1 = 18

    ⇒ 1– 2 4x = 1

    8

    Adding 14

    to both sides, we get

    ⇒ 1 – + 2 4x 1

    4 = 1 1+

    8 4

    ⇒ 2x = 1 1+

    8 4

    ⇒ 2x = 1 + 2

    8

    ⇒ 2x = 3

    8

    Multiplying both sides by 2, we get

    ⇒ 2x × 2 = 3

    8 × 2

    ∴ x = 34

    Hence, the required number is 34

    .

    Q.2. The perimeter of a rectangular swimming pool is 154 m. Its length is 2 m more than twice its breadth. What are the length and the breadth of the pool?

    Ans. Let breadth of the rectangle be x metre. We know, perimeter of rectangle = 2(l + b) As per condition :

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    6

    Length = 2x + 2 Perimeter = 2(length + breadth) 154 = 2(2x + 2 + x) ⇒ 154 = 2(3x + 2) ⇒ 154 = 6x + 4 ⇒ 154 – 4 = 6x + 4 – 4 ⇒ 150 = 6x

    ⇒ 1506

    = x

    ⇒ 25 = x; ∴ x = 25 m ⇒ Breadth of rectangle is 25 m. ∴ Length = 2x + 2 (put x = 25) ⇒ Length = 2 × 25 + 2 = 50 + 2 = 52 m. Hence, length of the pool is 52 m, and breadth of

    pool is 25 m.

    Q.3. The base of an isosceles triangle is 43

    cm. The perimeter

    of the triangle is 2415

    cm. What is the length of either of

    the remaining equal sides?

    Ans. Let length of remaining equal sides be x cm. As per condition

    Perimeter of triangle = 2415

    cm = 6215

    cm

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    7

    ∴ (x + x + 43

    ) cm = 6215

    cm

    ⇒ (2x + 43

    ) cm = 6215

    cm

    ⇒ 2x + 43

    = 6215

    ⇒ 2x = 62 4– 15 3

    ⇒ 2x = 62 4– 15 3

    ⇒ 2x = 62 – 2015

    = 4215

    ⇒ x = 422 × 15

    ⇒ x = 2115

    = 75

    ∴ x = 215

    cm

    Hence, length of remaining equal sides is 215

    cm.

    Q.4. Sum of two numbers is 95. If one exceeds the other by 15, find the numbers.

    Ans. Let one number be x then other number is x + 15. As per condition, (x + x + 15) = 95 ⇒ 2x + 15 = 95

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    8

    ⇒ 2x = 95 – 15 ⇒ 2x = 80

    ⇒ 22x = 80

    2

    ∴ x = 40 ∴ Other number = x + 15 = 40 + 15 = 55 Hence, the numbers are 40 and 55.

    Q.5. Two numbers are in the ratio 5:3. If they differ by 18, what are the numbers?

    Ans. Since the ratio of two numbers is 5:3 we can take numbers as,

    1st number = 5x 2nd number = 3x As per condition, 5x – 3x = 18 ∴ 2x = 18

    x = 182

    ;

    ∴ x = 9 ∴ 1st number = 5x = 5 × 9 = 45 2nd number = 3x = 3 × 9 = 27 Hence, the numbers are 45 and 27.

    Q.6. Three consecutive integers add up to 51. What are these integers?

    Ans. Three consecutive integers are x, x + 1 and x + 2. As per condition,

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    9

    Sum of three consecutive integers = 51 ⇒ x + x + 1 + x + 2 = 51 ⇒ 3x + 3 = 51 ⇒ 3x = 51 – 3 ⇒ 3x = 48

    ⇒ x = 483

    ∴ x = 16 Hence, three consecutive integers are 16, 17 and 18.

    Q.7. The sum of three consecutive multiples of 8 is 888. Find the multiples.

    Ans. If x is the multiple of 8, the next multiple is x + 8. The next to this is x + 8 + 8 or x + 16

    So, three consecutive multiples of 8 as x, x + 8 and x + 16. As per condition, x + x + 8 + x + 16 = 888 ⇒ 3x + 24 = 888 ⇒ 3x = 888 – 24 3x = 864

    ⇒ 33x = 864

    3

    ∴ x = 288 Hence, three consecutive multiples of 8 are 288, 296

    and 304 whose sum is 888.

    Q.8. Three consecutive integers are such that when they are taken in increasing order and multiplied by 2, 3 and 4 respectively, they add up to 74. Find these numbers.

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    10

    Ans. Three consecutive integers are : x, x + 1 and x + 2 As per condition, 2x + 3(x + 1) + 4(x + 2) = 74 ⇒ 2x + 3x + 3 + 4x + 8 = 74 ⇒ 9x + 11 = 74 ⇒ 9x = 74 – 11 ⇒ 9x = 63

    ⇒ 99x = 63

    9

    ∴ x = 7 Hence, three consecutive integers are 7, 8 and 9.

    Q.9. The ages of Rahul and Haroon are in the ratio 5:7. Four years later the sum of their ages will be 56 years. What are their present ages?

    Ans. Ratio of age of Rahul and Haroon = 5:7. So, we can take Rahul’s age = 5x Haroon’s age = 7x As per condition, 5x + 4 + 7x + 4 = 56 ⇒ (5x + 7x + 8) = 56 ⇒ 12x + 8 = 56 ⇒ 12x + 8 – 8 = 56 – 8 ⇒ 12x = 48

    ⇒ x = 4812

    ∴ x = 4 years

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    Q.10. The number of boys and girls in a class are in the ratio 7:5. The number of boys is 8 more than the number of girls. What is the total class strength?

    Ans. Number of boys in the class = 7x Number of girls in the class = 5x As per condition, 7x = 5x + 8 ⇒ 7x – 5x = 8 ⇒ 2x = 8

    ⇒ x = 82

    ∴ x = 4 ∴ Number of boys = 7 × 4 = 28 Number of girls = 5 × 4 = 20 ∴ Total Number of students in the class is 28 + 20 = 48.

    Q.11. Baichung’s father is 26 years younger than Baichung’s grandfather and 29 years older than Baichung. The sum of the ages of all the three is 135 years. What is the age of each one of them?

    Ans. Let Baichung’s father’s age = x years So, Baichung’s age = x – 29 years ∴ Baichung’s grandfather’s age = x + 26 years As per condition, x + x – 29 + x + 26 = 135 ⇒ 3x – 3 = 135

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    12

    ⇒ 3x = 135 + 3 ⇒ 3x = 138

    ⇒ x = 1383

    ∴ x = 46 Hence, Baichung’s father’s age = 46 years, Baichung’s age = 46 – 29 = 17 years, and Baichung’s grand father’s age = x + 26 = 46 + 26 = 72 years.

    Q.12. Fifteen years from now Ravi’s age will be four times his present age. What is Ravi’s present age?

    Q.1. Amina thinks of a number and subtracts 52

    from it. She

    multiplies the result by 8. The result now obtained is 3 times the same number she thought of. What is the number?

    Ans. Let the number be x. As per condition,

    8 (x – 52

    ) = 3x

    ⇒ 8x – 8 × 52

    = 3x

    ⇒ 8x – 20 = 3x ⇒ 8x – 3x – 20 = 3x – 3x ⇒ 5x – 20 = 0 ⇒ 5x = 20

    ⇒ x = 205

    ∴ x = 4 Hence, 4 is the required number.

    Q.2. A positive number is 5 times another number. If 21 is added to both the numbers, then one of the new numbers becomes twice the other new number. What are the numbers?

    Ans. Let the number be x and another number be 5x. As per condition, 2(x + 21) = 5x + 21 ⇒ 2x + 42 = 5x + 21 ⇒ 5x + 21 – 2x – 42 = 0 ⇒ 3x – 21 = 0 ⇒ 3x – 21 + 21 = 0 + 21 ⇒ 3x = 21

    ⇒ x = 213

    ⇒ x = 7 ∴ So, first number = 7 another number = 5 × 7 = 35

    Q.3. Sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9. When we interchange the digits, it is found that the resulting new number is greater than the original number by 27. What is the two-digit number?

    Ans. Let us take the two digit number be such that the digit in the units place is x, and digit in tens place be (9 – x.)

    Now, original number = 10(9 – x) + x = 90 – 10x + x = 90 – 9x

    Number after interchanging the digits = 9 – x + 10x = 9 + 9x

    As per condition :

  • CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    CBSEPracticalSkills.com ©Edulabz International

    25

    9 + 9x = 90 – 9x + 27

    or, 18x = 90 + 27 – 9 = 108

    ∴ x = 10818

    = 6

    So, digit in units place = 6

    and digit in tens place = 9 – 6 = 3

    So, required number is 36.

    Q.4. One of the two digits of a two digit number is three times the other digit. If you interchange the digits of this two-digit number and add the resulting number to the original number, you get 88. What is the original number?

    Ans. Let the digit in tens place of the number is x. Digit in units place is 3x ∴ Number = 10x + 3x = 13x Number after interchanging the digits = 10(3x) + x = 31x As per condition, 13x + 31x = 88 ⇒ 44x = 88

    4444

    x = 8844

    ∴ x = 2 ∴ Number = 13 × 2 = 26 or, another possible number is = 31x = 31 × 2 = 62

    Q.5. Shobo’s mother’s present age is six times Shobo’s present age. Shobo’s age five years from now will be one third of his mother’s present age. What are their present ages?

    Ans. Let Shobo’s present age be x years and Shobo’s mother’s age is 6x years. As per condition,

    (x + 5) = 13

    (6x)

    ⇒ x + 5 = 2x x + 5 – x = 2x – x ∴ 5 = x Hence, Shobo’s present age is 5 years. Mother’s age is 6 × 5 = 30 years.

    Q.6. There is a narrow rectangular plot, reserved for a school, in Mahuli village. The length and breadth of the plot are in the ratio 11:4. At the rate Rs 100 per metre it will cost the village panchayat Rs 75000 to fence the plot. What are the dimensions of the plot?

    Ans. Let, length of the plot be 11x and breadth be 4 x. We know perimeter of rectangle = 2(length + breadth) ⇒ 2(11x + 4x) = 30x

    At the rate Rs 100 per metre it will cost the village panchayat Rs 75000 to fence the plot.

    So, perimeter of plot = 75000100

For every 2 meters of the trouser material he buys 3 metres of the shirt material. He sells the materials at 12% and 10% profit respectively. His total sale is Rs 36,660. How much trouser material did he buy?

    Ans. Let cloth materials of trouser be x metres and

    cloth materials of shirt be 32

    x metres.

    Cost price of the cloth material of trouser = x × 90 He sells it with 12% profit, so its selling price

    = 90 × x + 90 × x × 12100

    = 100.8x

    Cost price of the cloth material of shirt = 32

    x × 50 = 75x

    He sells it with 10% profit, so its selling price

    = 75x + 75x × 10100

    = 82.5x As per condition, 100.8x + 82.5x = 36660 ⇒ 183.3x = 36660
