B E T H E L ’ S S E A S O NBethel has won four straight games after a rocky start to the 2012 season. The Wildcats were tied for No. 11 in the preseason NAIA poll, but quickly dropped after opening the season with a 24-21 home overtime loss to UVa.-Wise. Losses to Marian University and Georgetown College -- the top-two teams in the national poll -- put the Wildcats further away from a return trip to the national playoffs. Since the Georgetown loss, Bethel has won all four games -- two against ranked opponents -- while averaging 43.3 points per game.

Coaches...Lindsey Wilson’s Chris Oliver is 15-15 in his third season as a head coach. Chris Elliott is 6-3 all-time in his first season as a head coach of the Wildcats. Prior to being head coach, Elliott spent eight years on the Bethel coaching staff.

Spoiler...While the playoffs are not Lindsey Wilson’s 2012 future, the Blue Raiders will have a say in the playoff picture. Lindsey Wilson faces the MSC leader Bethel this week and Cumberland University -- who is receiving votes in the national poll -- next week in the season finale.

Fresh Faces...Cory Davenport and Josh Haney made the most of their opportunities last week in the Blue Raider backfield. Dav-enport rushed for a career-high 70 yards and scored three times in his first start for the Blue Raiders while Haney rushed for 43 yards with a team-high 13 carries.

Sacks...The Lindsey Wilson defense has 19 team sacks this season -- just two away from the program’s single-season record of 21 set in 2010.

Winning Turnover Battle Equals Win...Lindsey Wilson is 8-0 all-time when winning the turnover battle. Conversely, the Blue Raiders are 2-11 when having more turnovers than their opponents.

Closing Time...Lindsey Wilson has out-scored its opponents 66-43 in the fourth quarter this season.

Landmark Touchdown...Branden Cresap’s touchdown toss to Matt Powers with 5:04 left in the Blue Riders’ game against Campbellsville University was the 100th touchdown in the program’s his-tory.

MSC Projections...The Blue Raiders were selected to finish fourth in the MSC West Division in 2012. Lindsey Wilson received 20 voting points in the poll. Bethel was projected to win the MSC West with 32 voting points and four of the seven first-place votes.

CHRIS OLIVER - THIRD SEASON

Chris Oliver enters his third season as head football coach at Lindsey Wilson College in 2012 after leading the Blue Raiders to a 7-3 record in 2011. In the program’s first two-plus seasons of existence, Oliver has led the Blue Raiders to a 15-15 overall record, including to a 7-4 Mid-South Conference divisional record. In 2011, the Blue Raid-ers tied for second place in the East. Oliver’s Blue Raiders earned their first national ranking after being ranked No. 25 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top-25 Poll. Prior to that poll, Lindsey Wilson flirted with being ranked throughout the 2011 season as the Blue Raiders received votes in the national poll five different weeks, including the final regular-season poll. During 2011, Lindsey Wilson completed its first perfect month in the program’s history -- winning all four of its games during October. Following the season, Oliver was voted by his peers as the American Football Coaches Association Region 1 co-Coach of the Year. Oliver coached a trio of Blue Raiders to All MSC East Divi-sion honors in 2011 while nine others earned honorable mention all-conference. Lindsey Wilson also had the MSC East Division’s Offensive and Defensive Freshmen of the Year. The Blue Raiders have had the last two MSC East Division Defensive Freshmen of the Year. In his two seasons, Oliver has recruited and coached four all-conference selections and 14 honorable mention all-conference picks. During the program’s inaugural season in 2010, Oliver led the Blue Raiders to a 5-6 record with more than 95 percent of the team consisting of freshmen. Oliver picked up his first collegiate win as a head coach on Sept. 11 when the Blue Raiders beat Southern Virginia University 44-3 in Lindsey Wilson’s first win at Blue Raider Stadium. Hired on January 7, 2009, Oliver has overseen every aspect of bringing football back to Lindsey Wilson after a 75-year hiatus. Prior to Lindsey Wilson, Oliver spent five seasons as assistant coach at Ohio Dominican University. He served as offensive co-ordinator at Ohio Dominican from 2006-08. The Panthers were 26-7 while Oliver was offensive coordinator, which included an appearance in the 2007 NAIA Football Championship Series quarterfinals. Oliver graduated from The Ohio State University in 2003 and later completed his master’s degree from Ohio Dominican. He and his wife, Wendy, have two children, Samantha and Patrick.

G am e 1 - @ Kentu c k y C h r i st i an For the second time in the Lindsey Wilson College-Kentucky Christian University football series, 60 minutes was not enough. The home-standing Knights (1-0) upended Lindsey Wilson 27-20 in overtime in Saturday’s season-opener. The win avenges a 40-37 double-overtime loss to the Blue Raiders back in 2010 in Huntington, W.Va. Kentucky Christian quarterback Graham Johnston hit Rance Hughes for a 7-yard touchdown in the first overtime to ultimately send the Knights to the win. The Blue Raiders’ overtime possession fell shy of the endzone as Kentucky Christian’s Joshua Cobb broke up Branden Cresap’s pass to Chaz Barnes end the game. Lindsey Wilson falls to 0-1 on the season with the loss while Kentucky Christian moves to 1-0 on the season.

G am e 5 - @ Fau l k n er A pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns was not enough for the Lindsey Wilson College football team today (Sept. 22) as the Blue Raiders fell 43-41 to host Faulkner (Ala.) University at John Mark Stallings Field. Faulkner’s Josh Hollingsworth connected with Chris Kordakis with a little more than eight minutes left in the game to send the Eagles (3-1 overall and 2-0 Mid-South Conference West) to the win. The game-winning touchdown capped off a game that featured eight lead changes. A chance at a ninth lead change never materialized due to a fluke rule that ended the game with a 10-second run-off. Trailing by two points in the waning seconds of the game, Lind-sey Wilson’s Branden Cresap found Ben Madon in the middle of the field for a 32-yard completion to the Faulkner 44-yard line. The Blue Raiders looked to have one last chance with 1.4 seconds left in the game. But during the completion and subsequent tackle, Madon lost his helmet forcing the officials to assess a 10-second run-off of the clock -- thus ending the game. Lindsey Wilson falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MSC West Division.

G am e 7 - @ C ampb el l s v i l l e A last-minute drive that had Lindsey Wilson College on a roll toward the end zone ended with a Campbellsville interception that sealed a 28-23 win for the Tigers on Saturday at Ron Finley Stadium. Rome Cotton led all rushers with 60 yards and Branden Cre-sap threw for a game-high 301 yards and three touchdowns, but a blocked punt and pair of fumbles spoiled an early 10-0 Blue Raider lead. Matt Powers was the leading receiver in the game, catching a program-record 11 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers didn’t have a standout receiver, but Steph Haynes provided a highlight with his one catch, going for 76 yards and leading to a Campbellsville (2-5, 1-2 MSC West) touchdown. In a drive the mirrored the opening round of plays, Cresap found a groove, completing five straight passes until the Blue Raiders were in Tiger territory at the 17 with 24 seconds on the clock. Looking for his sixth completion, Cresap went over the middle to a pair of Blue Raider receivers where the ball was tipped in the air and intercepted by Earl McCann at the five-yard line.
