CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU - FEBRUARY 2016

Work-life balance is the prioritizing between work (career, ambition, productivity) and life-style (family, leisure, health, spiritual development). It’s the balance that is important to achieve. If there is too much focus on work, then stress related medical issues are a big concern and employees are more likely to quit. Too much leisure time, monotony can be problem. A website out of San Francisco, zippia.com recently ranked Lindsborg as one of the top ten cities in Kansas that successfully achieves a strong work-life balance.According to zippia.com “When it comes down to it, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is really all about maintaining an appropriate level of happiness. Because that’s the goal at the end day, finding the right level of work that still allows you to enjoy life.”Happiness and satisfaction are the characteristics of people who are achieving a work-life balance. This comes from having employment you enjoy, not wasting a lot of time getting to work and home, having a family and an environment that offers activities and entertainment. Zippia identified this set of criteria from the American Community Survey:• Commute time (Shorter is better)• Hours worked per week (Shorter is better)• Size of household (Higher is better)• Unemployment rate (Lower is better)• Poverty rate (Lower is better)• Things to do per capita (Higher is better)With these criteria in mind, Lindsborg made the list. Share with out-of-town friends and family what makes our community so exceptional! Whether they visit on a festival weekend such as the upcoming Messiah Festival of the Arts or just a regular weekday, there is always something to experience and scout out. Go to our website www.visitlindsborg.com or l ike our FB page “Lindsborg Convention & Visitors Bureau” to stay in the loop of all art exhib-its and classes, concerts, lectures, special cuisine events, theatre and general happenings!

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - FEBRUARY 2016

It may seem early, but now is the time to begin planning this season’s vegetable garden. If you are short on space for growing, consider signing up for a plot at Lindsborg’s Community Garden located at 1st Street and Union Street, next to the Välkommen Trail. The garden was originally established in 2013 with the financial assistance of Smoky Valley Community Fund, Bank of Tescott, McPherson County Community Foundation, and Jim and Kathy Richardson. The layout consists of 17 spaces measuring 10’ x 20’, which is plenty of room to grow a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs. Because of the limited number of plots, interested individuals and families should contact City Hall to learn of upcoming organizational meetings. Call Gary Shogren, Community Development Director, at 785-227-3355. Benefits of a community garden include:•Food Production and Access - Community gardens enable people without adequate land of their own to grow high-quality fruits and vegetables for themselves, their families and their communities.•Nutrition - Some research indicates that community gardeners eat more fruits and vegetables (Bremer et al., 2003).•Exercise - Gardening requires physical activity and helps improve overall physical health.•Mental Health - Interacting with plants and having access to nature help reduce stress and increase gardener’s sense of wellness and belonging. (Malakoff, 1995)•Community - Community gardens foster a sense of community identity, ownership and stewardship. They provide a place for people of diverse backgrounds to interact and share cultural traditions.•Environment - Gardens help reduce the heat-island effect in cities, increase biodiversity, reduce rain run off, recycle local organic materials and reduce fossil fuel use from food transport.•Education - All ages can acquire and share knowledge related to gardening, cooking, nutrition and health. Some gardens have programs that provide training in horticulture, business management, leadership development and market gardening.•Youth - Gardens provide a safe place for youth to explore gardening, nature and community through formal programming or informal participation.

If you have an interest in arboriculture, have a love for the great outdoors, or have an interest in keeping our community beautiful, contact the Parks De-partment at 785-227-3355 for more information.

31 YEARS - TREE CITY USA - 31 YEARS!In January 2016 Lindsborg was recognized as a Tree City USA for the 31st consecutive year. More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. They have achieved Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

PUBLIC WORKS - FEBRUARY 2016

Think Before You FLUSH!!To the left is a picture of half of a wad of “flushable wipes” that recently caused a backup in a city sewer main. This backup was caught early when city crews hap-pened to be out doing a routine inspection. Fortunately this did not cause any issues for home owners. However, had it not been caught when it was, waste water would have likely backed up into homes. City crews worked for three hours to dislodge this wad and finally got it moved down the sewer line where it could be removed. At the point where this plug occurred it was the city’s problem; however that is not always the case. When called by homeowners because of a back up, plumbers are also find-

ing more sewerline plugs as a result of “flushable wipes”. These plugs can be very hard to clear and re-move because of the way the wipes bond together in the line plus the weight they create as a wad grows. Flushable wipes can travel miles and spend hours in the system. They can go through multiple pumps and still arrive at the wastewater treatment plant completely intact. Although wipes are easily flushed, most do not break down the way that toilet paper is designed to. Because they do not break down, it becomes easier for wipes to get hung up in the line. When there are multiple flushable wipes in the sys-tem, plugs caused by them are becoming more frequent. More frequent plugs increase the odds that at some point a sewer backup caused by “flushable wipes” could affect you. This type of plug is one that you as a homeowner really can help reduce by simply not putting wipes down the toilet. The only things that should be going down your commode are human waste and toilet paper. Your household sew-er and the public lines are not designed to handle all of the modern products available to consumers. Here is a simple question- Would you flush paper towels or a hand towel? Hopefully the answer is no, but that is basically what you are doing when you flush wipes down the toilet. Flushable wipes will go down when flushed, but so will a golf ball. The next time you go to the store, please think about the products you are purchasing and more importantly, how you dispose of them. Remember “flush-able” does not mean it will break down, it simply means it will go down. Manufacturers are making prod-ucts that complement our busy lifestyles and make our lives easier. As consumers, we buy these prod-ucts and think that they are o.k. to use, but this is not always the case. There are many lawsuits filed against the manufacturers of wipes, flushable and none, because of the problems created in sewer and pumping systems. It really does not matter whether they are labeled flushable, baby, cleaning or any other kind of wipe. Wipes of any kind should not be flushed. Remember you can help reduce the possibility of a sewer back up by not flushing wipes; please take the time to dispose of wipes properly.

PUBLIC SAFETY - FEBRUARY 2016

Chris Matthews recently took the reins as Director of EMS for the City of Lindsborg. Chris began on the Volunteer Fire Department in 2010 as a way to serve others and contribute to the Community. In 2012 Chris took the EMT Class and began his volunteer service to the EMS as well as the Fire Department. Chris then became certified as an EMT Training Officer and was soon in charge of all training for the EMS Service. Chris is Pastor of the Smoky Valley Baptist Church in Lindsborg and is supported by his wife Bonnie and three children, Hannah, Allison and Felicity. As Director, Chris has made several changes that have impacted staff in a positive way as we move toward building a better service. The Lindsborg EMS will be hosting an EMT Class the first part of this year and we are excited about having a large group that will contribute to the well-being of our Community.

This year the Lindsborg Police Department was provided an opportunity to bring some smiles to the faces of children in our school dis-trict. The local Masonic Lodge was gracious enough to provide the funding this year for what we call the “Blue Santa” project.Officers identified children in our School District, purchased gifts and then delivered them to those children. The Department is hoping to make this an annual event. If you are inter-ested in making a contribution to this effort, contact the Chief of Police.
