GenesisThemiddleschoolsutilizeaweb-basedstudentdatasystemcalledGenesis thatmakesstudent informationaccessible24hoursaday, 7 days a week. Genesis can be used by parents to view student attendance, scheduling, conduct, current class grades,assignments, and report cards. Parent access to Genesis is private and password protected. It can be obtained by submitting acompletedGenesisAccessFormwithphoto ID to thestudent’s schooloffice forapproval.This isanexcellentway forparents toaccess important information about a student’s academic record and standingwhichwill enable parents/guardians to stay wellinformedaboutstudentprogress.CounselingServicesGuidanceservicesareavailabletoallstudentstoassiststudentsandtheirparentsineducational,vocational,andpersonaldecision-making.Anyinquiriesregardingschedulingshouldfirstbedirectedtothestudent’sguidancecounselor.Theprogramsthatstudentspursueinschoolshouldreflecttheirinterestsandfuturegoals.Becausestudentsdiffer,programsmustalsodiffer.Allstudentsareassignedtoaguidancecounselorwhowillworkwiththemduringtheirentiremiddleschoolexperienceintheareasofscholastic,career,personal,andsocialmatters.Parentsandguardiansareexpectedtoassistinthedevelopmentofacurriculumplan.Students’performanceandprogressshouldbemonitored. SchedulingProceduresEighthgradestudentsandparentswillbegiventheopportunitytoattendalargegroupinformationalsessionduringtheschooldayandevening.Once thegroupsessionshavebeenconducted,guidancecounselorswill setupgroup/individualappointmentswithstudents to chooseclasses for the followingyear.Toensure sufficient time for thecourse selectionprocess, it is imperative thatstudentsreportfortheappointmentwiththeircounseloratthedesignateddateandtime.Allstudentswillbeissuedacopyoftheirnextyearcourserequestsforparentstoreview.Priortotheschoolyear,officialcopiesofstudentscheduleswillbemailedhomeandwillalsobeavailableforreviewintheGenesisParentModule.InterventionandReferralServicesTheInterventionandReferralServices(I&RS)committeeisamultidisciplinaryschool-basedteam.Itplansanddeliverseducational,social, health, emotional and behavioral interventions for students whichmay result in referral to other school and communityresourcesincludingtheschool'sChildStudyTeam.AparentmayrequestanevaluationoftheirchildwhomayhavealearningorbehaviordisabilitybyaskingtheI&RScommitteetoreviewthechild'sschoolneedsbycontactingtheirSchoolCounselors.

SpecialEducationClassifiedstudentsareplacedineducationalsettingsthataretheleastrestrictive,whilestillaccommodatingtheirdisability.Classifiedstudents may be placed in self-contained classes geared to their disability (e.g. learning/language disabled, behavior disability,multipledisability),inresourcerooms,orinregularclasseswithteacherorparaprofessionalsupport.Specialeducationclassesusethesamecurriculumastheregulareducationclassesbutitismodifiedandadaptedtothecircumstancesofeachstudent.TheChildStudyTeamconductseducationalassessments throughaSocialWorker, SchoolPsychologistanda LearningDisabilitiesTeacherConsultant(LDTC)whoevaluateandcasemanagestudentsthatqualifyforspecialeducationand/orrelatedservices.Special Education may consist of self-contained classes, resource center instruction, inclusion instruction and full mainstreaminstruction with monitoring. At times students may require alternative Special Education placements outside of Linden inaccordancewithastudent'sIndividualizedEducationPlan.Anyparentorstaffmembercanmakeadirect referral recommendationonastudent forspecialeducationservicesbysendingalettertotheDirectorofSpecialEducation.RelatedSpecialEducationServices• Speech-SpeechandLanguageSpecialistaddressachild'slanguagedelaysorlanguagedisorders.• OccupationalTherapy-Anoccupationaltherapistisaspecialisttrainedtofacilitatedevelopmentandcorrectionoffinemotor

DISTRICTMIDDLESCHOOLSTANDARIZEDTESTINGPROGRAMPARCCStudents in grades 3-11 will be subject to PARCC Assessments. The PARCC will assess English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy andMathematicsandincludethefollowingcomponents:PerformanceTaskinELA/LiteracyandMathematics.Allstudentswilltakethissummativetesttowardtheendoftheschoolyeartodemonstratetheirknowledge.- InELA/Literacy,thiswillinvolveanalyzingliteratureandanarrativewritingtask.Studentswillreadtextsandwriteseveralpiecesto demonstrate they can read and understand sufficiently complex texts independently; write effectively when using andanalyzingsources;andbuildandcommunicateknowledgebyintegrating,comparingandsynthesizingideas.

- InMathematics,studentswillbeaskedtosolveproblemsinvolvingthekeyknowledgeandskillsfortheirgradelevel(asidentifiedbytheNJSLS),expressmathematicalreasoningandconstructamathematicalargument,andapplyconceptstosolvemodelreal-worldproblems.

NJASKScienceStudents in Grades 4 and 8will be administeredNJASK Science. Three proficiency levels have been determined for each of thesectionsoftheNJASK:PartiallyProficient(under200),Proficient(200to250)andAdvancedProficient(250-300).Studentsscoringthelowestlevel,PartiallyProficient,areconsideredtobebelowthestateminimumlevelofproficiency.ACCESSTestingforEnglishLanguageLearnersStudents in Kindergarten through 5th grade who are Limited English Language Learners (ELLs) also take the ACCESS (AccessingComprehensionandCommunicationinEnglishStatetoStateforEnglishLanguageLearners)testforELLs.

PositiveBehaviorSupportinSchools(PBSIS)MylesJ.McManusandJosephE.SoehlMiddleSchoolsareexcitedtobepartofaninitiativethatisasystemsapproachtocreatingapositive school climate that fosters pro-social student behavior. As part of the program, school wide expectations have beenoutlined,aschoolwiderecognitionsystemhasbeenestablishedandpositivestudentbehaviorisencouragedandsupported.21stCenturyCommunityLearningCenterThe21stCenturyCommunityLearningCenterisanafter-schoolprogramthatsupplementstheeducationofJosephE.SoehlMiddleSchool students ingradessix througheight. Theprogramoperates from2:45p.m.–5:45p.m. throughout theacademicyear. Itoffers an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills and discover their abilities after the regularschool day has ended. Tutorial services and enrichment activities are designed to help studentsmeet local and state academicstandards.In addition, the 21st Century program provides youth development activities such as character education, drug and violenceprevention,technologyeducation,servicelearning,art,music,andphysicaleducationenrichment.CommunityFridayNights,familyculturalfieldtrips,guestspeakers,assemblies,andparentingworkshopsarescheduledthroughouttheyear.The21st CenturyCommunity LearningCenter collaborateswith adiverse groupof communitypartners suchasPrevention Links,YouthServiceBureau,YMCAandJewishFamilyServicesofCentralNewJersey.Theafter-schoolprogramhasapositiveimpactonourchildrenthroughanimportanttransitionalstageandultimatelyhelpsthemtobecomeproductivecitizens.StudentPromotion/RetentionTheBoardrecognizesthatpersonal,social,physicalandeducationalgrowthofchildrenwillvaryandthattheyshouldbeplacedintheeducationalsettingmostappropriatetotheirneedsatthevariousstagesoftheirgrowth.At the beginning of each school year, parents/guardians and pupils shall be informed regarding promotion requirements andproficienciesfortheacademicyear.Documentationofthenotificationshallbemaintained.Parents/guardiansandpupilsshallbenotifiedatappropriatetimesduringtheschoolyearofprogressinmeetingpromotionandremediationstandards.Reportcardswillbe issuedfourtimesduringtheschoolyear. Parents/guardiansofpupilswhoare indangeroffailingforthemarkingperiodshallreceiveinterimreportsmidwayinthemarkingperiod.Pupil placement forGrades 6 through 8will be determinedby evaluating pupil performance and achievement in relation to thedistrictgoalsandtheindividual’sphysical,emotional,intellectualandsocialmaturity,aswellaschronologicalage.Thosepupilswhohavedemonstratedanacceptablelevelofproficiencyinbasicskillsandappropriatemasteryofdistrictgoalsaretobepromotedtothenextgrade.Listedon thenextpage is a tableoutlining the conditionsbywhich studentsare retainedorpromoted.The table is followedbyfurtherdetailsregardingprocedures.

Students will not be permitted tomake upmore than two courses insummer school. Studentswho fail summer school or subsequently choose not to attend summer school for any reasonwill, innearlyallcases,beretainedsubjecttoafinalreviewbythebuildingPrincipal.(SeeMatrix)At theendof the3rdmarkingperiod, theprincipal or designated guidance counselor shall ascertain thosepupilswhomaybe indanger of being retained. The parents/guardians shall be invited to ameetingwith the principal and/or other appropriate staffmembers designated to seek parental opinion concerning any action to bolster pupil progress and to provide substantialconsiderationofthepupil.Parentsshallbenotifiedinwritingofthestudent’sretentionandtheirrightsofappealconcerningtheschool’sdecisiontoretainthepupil.Theappealprocessfollowsthestandardprocedure.Onecanappealtotheprincipal,thenthesuperintendent,andfinallytheLinden Board of Education. Requests for appeal shall be inwriting, and the principal shall assist the parents in developing thisrequest, if necessary. Eighth-grade students who fail any core academic subjects, or Health, Physical Education or a ForeignLanguagewillnotbepermittedtoparticipateingraduationexercises.

SpecializedProgramsLibrary/MediaCenterTheMedia Teacher andMedia Specialist work in partnershipwith students and other facultymembers to analyze learning andinformationneeds.Assistanceisgiventolocateanduseresourcesthatwillmeetthoseneedsandtounderstandandcommunicatetheinformationtheresourcesprovide.MediaStaffmemberspoolresourceswithteachers,administrators,andparentsinprovidingknowledge of availability of information resources to support student projects and research papers. The educational MediaSpecialistandtheMediaTeacherare influentialpartners inprovidingan integratedcurriculumthatpreparesstudentsforsuccesswithbothprintandelectronicresources.TheMcManusandSoehl Librariesofferawideassortmentofbooks,magazinesandon-line internet services.Collectionsproviderecreationalreadingmaterialthatcoordinateswithalldistrictcurriculums.AnorientationprogramisscheduledeachfallforallsixthgradeLanguageArtsclasses.Theyreviewthelibraryfloorplan,cardcatalogusage,aswellasrulesandregulations.Allbookscanbetakenoutfortwoweekswithanoptiontorenew.ArequirementinLanguageArtsisaformalresearchpaper.Theseclassesconducttheirresearchinthelibraryusingresearchbooks,periodicalsandinternetsites.Scienceandsocialstudiesclassesalsoinvestigatearangeoftopicsthroughouttheyear.EBSCOOn-LinePeriodicalDatabaseandEBSCOCareerGuidanceSystemareavailableforallstudentsandstaff.Alsoavarietyofproductivitysoftwareisaccessible,whichgivestudentstheopportunitytogeneratemultimediareportsandpresentations.HonorsProgramMcManus and Soehl Middle Schools offer Honors courses in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and WorldLanguages.PlacementintheHonorscoursesarebasedontheacademicperformancesinthepreviousyear’scourseand/orateacher/principalrecommendation.TomaintainenrollmentinHonorscourses,studentsmustmaintainamarkingperiodaverageof‘B’orabove.Intheeventamarkingperiodaveragefallsundera ‘B’a reviewprocessconsistingof thestudent’scounselorseeking input fromtheteacheronstudentplacement and if removal from Honors is necessary a parental conference with the student’s counselor and teacher will beconducted.

AcademicSupportService(BasicSkills)Studentswhoscoresignificantlybelowproficiencylevelonstatetestswillbeidentifiedforacademicsupportservices.Thistargetedassistance and extra supportmay include awide range of services including assistance in their Language Arts andMathematicsclassesandschooltutoring. Inaddition,studentsneedingextraassistancewillhavetheopportunitytoreceivesupportduringtheschooldayviaanadditionalsupportteacherpushingintotheLanguageArtsAandMathematicsAclassesthreetimesperweekforaminimumof90minutes.IdentificationProcess:Inadditiontoteacherrecommendation,thefollowingcriteriashouldalsobeconsideredtobeadmittedintotheLanguageArtsAandMathematicsAsupportclasses.
