newsletter. I am really excited to see the outfits people will wear. As you know, the

contest this year is the cutest Christmas outfit, not the ugly sweater and ties of the

past.

requesting all Units who are able to donate a theme baskets, as well as any other individual items to the auction.

Let’s build up that fund so that all who are in need of assistance will be able to count on their American Legion

Family!

January 28th and 29th will be the 46th Annual Snowmobile Rally for membership! This is such a fun time and everyone

is invited to join one of the groups along the way. The schedule is attached later in the newsletter. I am hoping to

make at least one of the stops with each group. If you want me to stop at your Post, please let me know and I will do

all I can to make it!

The Call to District Junior Conference is included in this newsletter. Let’s have a good turnout for the Conference!!!

As Kiana Coleman-Woods, Department Honorary Junior President’s theme says “Juniors are the Key to the Future!”

Megan is working hard this year on behalf of the District Juniors and I would love to see more of our young women

participating.

I am hoping this newsletter reaches you before the upcoming holidays but if not, I hope your Christmas was blessed

and your New Year peaceful and prosperous.

LEADERSHIP

1) Looking for a unit in the 10th District to host a Leadership Open Discusssion Breakfast for units within

our District on a Saturday for 2 to 3 hours. I would supply the sweets, if your unit would supply the coffee

and space. It would not be a workshop but a time to learn from one another in a comfortable setting that is a

nonjudgmental zone.

2) I will have Department of MN American Legion Auxiliary shirts for members to try on and look at in

January at MidWinter. These are ordered through department and are available to ship once paid for directly

to your home. These are the short sleeve blue shirts.

I will also have the Member Handbooks available for purchase with me.

MEMBERSHIP

2016 Membership Program: Make time – help a Veteran, Active duty military, their family, and the Community: Join

the pack!

Our next Department goal is 70%! We have until February first to meet the goal; however, the earlier we reach it the

better for everyone. Now is the time to get those remaining renewals in and accounted for.

Remember, mail the memberships in on a regular basis. You should not be holding the memberships for a rally,

unless the rally is a week or less away. It is especially important to send those memberships in toward the end of the

month so they count toward the next goal. Remember, memberships brought to a Department Rally count toward

the following goal because the goal date is the first of the month!! WE CAN DO IT!! We are currently in 7th place with

71.08%. First place is at 77.82%. WE CAN DO IT!!

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Personally, I am looking forward to 2017 as

that means my husband will be home from Afghanistan.

Thank you for your excellent work so far.

Early and often – let’s get those memberships in;

PUBLIC RELATIONS “Who we are, what we do, and why we matter,” a basic thought of many American Legion Auxiliary Members, and a thought of community members. Just who are the members of the American Legion Auxiliary? American Legion Auxiliary Members come from all walks of life. We all have husbands, brothers, and fathers, or Grandfathers, who have served in our country’s military, fighting our wars, and keeping America free. Some of us are veterans ourselves. The American Legion Auxiliary works together with American Legionnaires, providing assistance and care to Veterans, Military, and their families, and to children in military families. The American Legion Auxiliary members volunteer many hours in our communities throughout America and abroad. We volunteer at nursing homes, Veteran’s Hospitals, and at airports. We volunteer at community functions, peeling potatoes, serving meals, washing dishes, sorting donated clothing, etc. We are honor guards for our deceased Unit Member funerals. For nearly a century American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves to

meeting the needs of America’s Veterans, Military and their families. As part of the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization, Auxiliary volunteers across the nation step up to honor Veterans and Military through annual scholarships and with the ALA Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders, grounded in patriotism and Americanism. Millions of hours are volunteered yearly with a value of $3.1 billion. Tenth District Auxiliary President, Linda Deschene’s theme “Howling for Veteran’s Causes”, symbolized by the wolf, represents her project “ Operation Comfort Warriors” (OCM), an American Legion program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded, injured or ill military personnel, providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by our government. Linda needs $15,000 for this program. Any excess funds are to be divided equally between Tenth District Commander Bonnie Hanson and Tenth District S.A.L. Commander Larry Daml for their projects. American Legion Units within District 10 are being asked to donate a theme basket as well as any other items to be auctioned off at the Silent Auction during the Mid-Winter Conference in Anoka, to benefit the American Legion Family Hospital Association.

SERVICE TO VETERANS Greetings!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season filled with love and laughter with family and friends!

Just a reminder that the cost for sewing materials can come from Poppy Funds. Before you make any items, please contact each American Legion Auxiliary Hospital Representative at each facility to see what they are in need of and notify them when you will be delivering the items. Make sure you include your units name, address, number and district so that you receive recognition for your contribution.

Please consider a few projects to help your local veterans this winter season:

help shoveling driveways and walkways

transportation to appointments of all kinds

help assembling items needed for tax season

help with household chores or grocery shopping {remember, hours helping a relative who is a veteran are NOT reportable}

The U.S. Postal Service is now putting the word Forever on their commemorative stamps. We still want them. Stamps should be cut 1/4" all around. Intact picture postcards are still very desirable. Please don't remove the stamp. Funds from the sale of these items go to the Auxiliary Hospital Program. Please send these items to the Department Office.

There have been a few new patterns added to our list. The patterns can be found on our department website under the Programs tab; or use this link http://www.mnala.org/ProgramsDetail.aspx?id=19.

If you volunteer at a VA health care facility please consider taking one of the orientation classes offered by the Minneapolis and St Cloud facility; volunteers must take one of these classes in order to credit their hours towards certificates, pins, bars, and patches.
