2020-2021
Re-Opening Plan
Revised August 3, 2020
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210
1
August 3, 2020
Dear Lincoln-Way Families and Staff,
Lincoln-Way District 210 along with the District 210 Task Force Committee has
developed a plan to welcome our students back to school this fall. Because this
situation is constantly changing, the attached plan may be altered based upon
guidance from ISBE and IDPH. It is important that we share the two overarching
concepts that drove the development of this plan:
First, student and staff health and safety is our highest priority. By adhering to the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Guidelines, we continue to commit to
the adjustment and amendment of our plan if/when this guidance changes.
Second, the guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and IDPH
clearly states that “In-person instruction is strongly encouraged,” causing our
committee to work to find creative solutions and options for bringing students back
to school.
With these two guiding principles in mind, Lincoln-Way developed the Blended
Learning A/B model in order to offer families an option for students to return to
school while following all health and safety guidelines set forth in the Return to
School ISBE Guidelines.
We also are providing an Opt-out option for families who choose to keep their
students at home. Although we are confident that our Blended A/B plan follows the
present health guidelines, we understand that there are many factors families are
facing at this time that make it necessary to provide choice.
Additionally, in the event that conditions and guidance from ISBE and/or IDPH
change, the district has also developed a Full Remote Learning plan that can be
implemented for all students to learn remotely until officials warrant or recommend
the safe return to Blended A/B or full in-person learning.
Lincoln-Way District 210 remains committed to providing the educational, extra-
curricular, and social-emotional experiences that our community has come to
expect. Although the 2020-21 school year may look different, we remain optimistic
and look forward to welcoming our Knights, Griffins, and Warriors back as we come
together to embrace this unique school year.
Respectfully,
R. Scott Tingley

Return to School Plan At-A-Glance
First Day of In-Person Student Attendance:
Group A: Thursday, August 20, 2020
Group B: Friday, August 21, 2020
In-Person Instruction:
Guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public
Health (IDPH) form the foundation for our safe and supportive return to school in which, “in-
person instruction is highly recommended.”
Change of Plans:
Lincoln-Way High School will monitor regional and local COVID-19 infection rates in weekly
coordination with the Will County Health Department and the IDPH. The decision to move to all
Remote Learning will be based upon the infectious rate of Will County or our region (Region 7).
If the infectious rate reaches 8% for 3 consecutive days in the county or the region, a decision to
implement Remote Learning will be made. Remote Learning would continue until the infectious
rate is below 8% for 14 consecutive days. Additional guidance from IDPH is expected, which will
include specific metrics to guide school districts in making decisions during the school year.
Mandatory Health Precautions:
All students, faculty, staff, and visitors will wear face coverings, social distance, and practice
frequent hand sanitization. All staff, students, and visitors must submit a self-certification prior
to entering any district facility.
Opt-Out of Blended Learning A/B:
Parents and guardians can choose the learning environment that best meets the needs of their
students. Options include Blended Learning A/B, which combines synchronous and
asynchronous learning and instruction, or OPTING OUT of Blended Learning A/B and remotely
learn utilizing a fully online/remote learning platform.
Additional Support:
English Learners and some Special Education programs have the opportunity to receive in-
person instruction more regularly.
Free and Reduced Lunch:
Serving our students through the Free and Reduced Lunch program will continue regardless of
the learning environment that families choose.

Summary of Phase 4 of the Governor’s Five-Phase Plan to Restore Illinois
Our decision to bring students back to school in-person aligns with the guidance for Phase-4 of the Five-
Phase Plan to Restore Illinois; additionally, returning students to campus is highly recommended by
ISBE and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Currently, regional and local COVID-19 infection rates are relatively low. As such, we are in a position to
bring students back to school in-person in adherence to the IDPH guidelines because our local
communities have mitigated the community spread of COVID-19 to a degree that allows us to operate
well within Phase 4 requirements.
Lincoln-Way is committed to adhering to the IDPH guidelines during Phase-4 that include the following
requirements:
● Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including face coverings.
● Prohibiting more than 50 individuals from gathering in one space.
● Social distancing as much as possible.
● Conducting symptom screenings, temperature checks, or requiring that individuals self-
certify that they are free of symptoms before entering school buildings.
● Increase in school-wide cleaning and disinfection.

Blended Learning A/B Overview: Fall 2020
Blended Learning A/B Goals:
For students to have an academically challenging, supportive experience during Blended
Learning A/B days of instruction.
To reduce the number of students in our buildings during the school day by approximately 50%
while ensuring that teachers and students can meet in-person a minimum of twice per week.
During Blended Learning, staff, students, and families will face a wide variety of challenges; therefore,
empathy, flexibility, and personalization will guide our Blended Learning Plan.
The Blended Learning plan will help keep people safe, provide educational experiences and
opportunities, and support the social-emotional and behavioral needs of staff and students.
All Blended Learning experiences will be inclusive, engaging, flexible, and build capacity for
independent learning.
Instructional principles will be considered when providing blended learning for students and
staff including differentiation, sound assessment practices, cultural awareness, diligent
communication, and intervention.
Curriculum and instruction during Blended Learning will be constructed and delivered in a way
that supports rigor, is relevant to students, and fosters relationships.
General Guidelines: Following IDPH/ISBE guidelines, Blended Learning A/B focuses on limiting the total number of people in
a building daily.
A Day: Group A students attend In-Person; Group B students work asynchronously at home.
B Day: Group B students attend In-Person; Group A students work asynchronously at home.
Teachers will repeat in-class components of instruction to the two groups of students, A and B, every
other day. On opposite days, students will be at home completing asynchronous components of the
coursework. In this way, staff will provide in-person instruction with all students 2-3 days a week.

person, Microsoft Forms, AP Classroom, IXL, Mastery Manager, or other means. Assessments may
include alternative ways for students to demonstrate learning.
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210
11
Curriculum & Instruction: Teachers have the autonomy during Blended Learning to modify the curriculum to meet students’ needs
and teach the most critical components of the curriculum. Much of this curriculum planning has taken
place over the summer as teachers collaborated to prepare for Blended Learning.
Opening the School Year: Teachers should take the opportunity to build relationships with
students and cultivate a classroom culture that is supportive and caring. Building culture also
includes establishing classroom routines, expectations for in-person and asynchronous learning,
gap remediation, and assessments of readiness.
In-person and Asynchronous Instruction: ISBE guidance about in-person instruction is clear:
“School districts should include as much face-to-face or synchronous instruction as possible.” To
that end, teachers will use a complement of in-person and asynchronous instructional
strategies. Each method provides opportunities to advance learning and social-emotional
wellness. Teachers will identify best practices for how and when in-person and asynchronous
activities will be used, capitalizing on the time they have face-to-face with students.
OPT-OUT of Blended Learning: Students and families may choose to OPT-OUT of Blending Learning A/B Days for the semester instead
of attending in-person classes on campus. Students opting out of Blended Learning may not receive
daily direct instruction from a Lincoln-Way teacher; instead, students may use ACELLUS, an online
learning platform. When students complete their assignments and assessments on ACELLUS, grades will
be assigned by Lincoln-Way teachers.
Important elements of ACELLUS include:
The curriculum of ACELLUS courses are similar to Lincoln-Way courses, but they are not
identical.
Students will have a Lincoln-Way teacher who provides weekly academic support; however, the
faculty member will not teach daily lessons. Students will receive their daily instruction on
course content through the ACELLUS platform.
Attendance is required and will be monitored by the teacher.
Social-Emotional Wellness & Supports: The social-emotional well-being of our students is a primary concern. Blended/Remote Learning is a
different educational experience, and it is important to be aware of students’ social-emotional needs
during this time. Students can experience greater emotions such as depression, anxiety, and social
isolation. Additionally, COVID-19 and other current events impacting society has underscored SEL as an
essential part of a high-quality education, focusing on relationships, resiliency, and collective problem-
solving as fundamental to teaching and learning. The District is dedicated to student support, and all
Lincoln-Way support staff will be available during Blended and Opt-Out Remote Learning.
An SEL Task Force is currently working on specific, targeted SEL support including a Return to School
Survey to immediately identify students’ social-emotional readiness to return to school. Additionally,
training will be provided to staff to increase the awareness of the potential mental health impacts of
COVID-19. Ongoing SEL check-ins and surveys will be incorporated into curriculum to increase the
awareness of students’ changing emotional wellness. Students, parents, and staff may reach out to any
of the below support staff if they need academic or social-emotional support:

Access to the hallways during class time will be limited. Hallways will be either one-way or divided in half
with directional arrows to minimize contact and emphasize social distancing. Stairways will be labeled
for one-way traffic only (“UP ONLY” – “DOWN ONLY”).
Cafeteria Protocol: When the cafeteria is being used, no more than 50 students will be allowed in each area. Students may
be assigned to other areas of the building during their lunch period. Tables will be eliminated from
occupancy, and desks will be spaced apart to practice social distancing. Students are encouraged to
bring their own sack lunch. “Grab-n-Go” pre-made lunches will be available every day. If applicable, they
must be picked up from the cafeteria upon arrival to school.
Payments will be cashless and touchless: Money can be loaded on a student’s ID card via RevTrak or students can bring cash to the financial secretary to deposit in their account. Pick up for all breakfast/lunch, regardless if it is an A or B day, will be before the 1st hour bell in the kitchen. Free/Reduced students on asynchronous learning days will need to pick up their lunch during these hours as well. Advanced online ordering will be available and required starting the week of August 10th. More
information to come.
Self-Certification and Symptom Checks: Parents are responsible for keeping their child home if they show any signs of COVID-19, including but
not limited to, fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, fatigue, muscle and body aches, headache, sore
throat, nausea, or vomiting.
Each student and staff member must complete a LW210 HEALTH SELF-CERTIFICATION SURVEY at the
start of each school day.
Students may have their temperature taken upon arrival to school. Students who show symptoms or
have temperatures above 100.4 degrees will be sent home after a parent is contacted.
Teacher Availability: Teachers will monitor and respond to emailed questions individually or in a mass communication with
electronic resources. Teachers will use a variety of means to stay connected with students including, but
not limited to: webpage updates, Teams updates, videos, emails, etc. to provide clarification and
feedback.
Connectivity: For students to engage in Blended Learning, students will need access to their Lincoln-Way email, their
Skyward account, and their Microsoft Office portal. In the event a student does not have access to WiFi
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210

or a smart device with data, students and/or parents should contact a counselor or another
administrator. Laptops and/or tablet devices may be provided for students who do not have access.
Transportation: Students utilizing the district’s busing system will be required to follow the guidelines established by the ISBE. Students must wear an approved facial covering while at bus stops and while being transported to and from school. Buses will be capped at 50 students, and social distancing is recommended while on the bus. After each route, the buses will be spot-cleaned with a focus on high-contact areas. A thorough cleaning of each bus will occur every night using approved cleaning measures.
Special Needs, 504 and EL Students: Students with special needs will receive their assignments via e-mail, Skyward Message Center, or in-
person in the same manner as their general education peers. Students with special needs and their
parents will have access to their case manager and teachers to report any issues they may encounter
during Blended Learning. Related service staff will continue to provide services. Some students with
Special Needs and/or English Language Learners may be provided daily in-person instruction per
guidelines.
Activities Lincoln-Way believes in the importance and benefits of extracurricular activities. The District is
committed to providing students with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities in the
safest possible way by following IDPH, ISBE, IHSA, and NFHS guidance for social distancing, appropriate

Health and Safety Protocols Facilities Access: All staff, students, and visitors must abide by the following guidance for access to any District facility.
Health Screening: All staff, students, and visitors must complete a health screening prior to entering any district facility.
This screening will include a verification that the individual is free from COVID-19 symptoms and does
not have a fever of 100.4°F or above. Any individual identifying that they have a temperature greater
than 100.4°F or exhibit a symptom of COVID-19 will not be allowed access to a District facility.
Face Coverings: All staff, students, and visitors must wear a face covering at all times in District facilities, even when
social distancing is maintained. Face coverings must be consistent with the guidelines identified by IDPH.
All face coverings must fully cover the mouth and nose and fit snugly against all sides of the face with no
gaps. As such, bandanas do not qualify as an acceptable face covering. Reusable face coverings should
be machine washed or hand washed and allowed to dry completely after each use. If a face covering
must be removed, the front of the face covering is considered contaminated and should not be touched
during the removal or replacement process. Hand hygiene should be performed immediately after
removing and after replacing the face covering. Further guidance about proper face covering use is
available from the CDC. Staff or students with a medical reason preventing them from wearing face
coverings must obtain a physician’s statement identifying this need and contact an administrator to
develop an appropriate PPE plan.
Social Distancing: All staff, students, and visitors must practice social distancing from others whenever possible by
maintaining at least six (6) feet of physical separation between themselves and others. To maximize the
ability of staff and students to social distance, the District will bring only a portion of students into the
building for in-person instruction on any given day. Furthermore, staff and students in the building will
need to carefully pay attention to signage demonstrating appropriate social distances and will need to
attend to signage indicating the direction of travel for hallways and stairwells. Whenever possible, the
District will mark hallways, stairwells, and doorways to indicate the direction of travel to increase the
amount of space available between individuals.
Personal Hygiene: All staff, students, and visitors must practice appropriate hand hygiene when inside district facilities
including all of the following guidelines:
● Frequently wash hands with soap and water for at least twenty (20) seconds. When soap
and running water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand rub with at least 60% alcohol.
Always wash hands that are visibly soiled. More information about proper handwashing is
available from the CDC Handwashing website.
● Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
● Practice effective respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs and sneezes.

Shared Supplies and Materials: To the extent possible, staff, students, and visitors should avoid sharing supplies. In most cases, there is
no need to share supplies. In the event a handheld material must be shared, the individual using the
shared supply must use the District provided disinfectant to thoroughly clean the item prior to and
following its use.
Illness Procedures and Reporting an Illness: If a student is sick, they must stay home. Parents will need to contact the Attendance Office at the
student’s campus to notify the school of their child’s absence prior to 9:00 a.m. When making this call,
parents must identify whether their student is missing school because they have a symptom of COVID-
19, a fever of 100.4°F or above, a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, or was potentially exposed to COVID-19.
Students should stay home when they have:
A fever over 100.4
Cough not related to asthma or allergies
Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing
Chills
Muscle pain
Sore throat
New onset of runny nose or congestion
New loss of taste or smell
Gastrointestinal symptoms: nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19
Please note that even without symptoms of COVID-19, any student exposed to an individual with COVID-
19 must notify the Attendance Office of their exposure and remain home for 14 days. Parents should
understand this call will likely result in a follow up call from the Attendance Office to confirm details
related to their student’s condition.
Schools may remain open if a student or staff member contracts COVID-19. Contact tracing and IDPH
protocols will be used to determine who needs to receive notification and self-quarantine. Only those
individuals who were within 6 feet of the infected person for 15 minutes or longer will need to self-
quarantine. Please refer to the Return to School section of this document for more information about
when infected or exposed individuals may return.

Operations HVAC:
The District will monitor air quality on a regular basis. Based on the recommendations of
engineers, the District will manage the HVAC systems in the facilities in the following ways.
● Maximizing the filtration power of the HVAC system by using the filter with the highest
level of air filtration possible and changing the filters on a routine basis to ensure they
perform at an optimum level.
● Maximizing the amount of outdoor air brought into the building. Depending on the
weather and outdoor air quality conditions the District will bring in between 25-100%
outdoor air.
Distancing with the Facilities: The District is taking a variety of actions to maximize the ability of staff, students, and visitors to
social distance while in the facilities.
● Classroom Spaces
Each classroom was measured to ensure all desks within the classroom are spaced to
maximize social distancing. Excess desks were removed from classrooms. Additionally,
the IDPH identified that staff and students may briefly remove their masks in the
classroom to take a drink of water when classrooms are properly socially distanced.
● Drinking Fountains
Students will need to bring their own water bottles to school. Staff and students may
continue to use water bottle fillers.
● Hallways and Stairwells
Each hallway and stairwell will be assigned a direction to keep all staff, students, and
visitors moving in the same direction when in a particular space.
● Lockers
In accordance with guidance, lockers will not be available for use by students. Students
should bring a bag that will always allow them to keep their materials on them.
● Locker Rooms

● Restrooms
All restroom areas within District facilities will be available to staff, students, and
visitors. Specific areas within each restroom may be closed in an effort to support social
distancing efforts. Further, staff members will monitor bathroom ingress and egress to
ensure the number of individuals in the restroom is conducive to proper distancing.
Signage: Signage is present in all District facilities to deliver several important messages including:
● Health screening notices;
● Face covering notices;
● Reminders to maintain social distance;
● Guides to indicate proper social distance in specific areas;
● Reminders to practicing proper hygiene; and
● Reminders to wear a mask at all times.
Nurse’s Office: Students will no longer be able to go to the Nurse’s Office unannounced. For students needing to tend
to routine medical conditions, the Nurse’s will establish a schedule and identify a location designed to
meet these students’ needs. Students needing to visit the Nurse’s Office for illness or injury will need to
see an adult staff member to facilitate their visit to see the nurse.

Full Remote Learning Overview: A Day/B Day
Full Remote Learning Goal: In the event that the district must go Full (not Opt-out) Remote Learning, the goal will be for ALL
students to have an academically challenging, supportive experience during Full Remote Learning days
of instruction. During Full Remote Learning, staff, students, and families will face a wide variety of
challenges therefore, empathy, flexibility, and personalization will guide our Full Remote Learning Plan.
Full Remote Learning is defined by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) as an educational program
designed to enable school to provide continuous educational opportunities for all students and is
designed for those times when students and educators are not able to be in the same physical space due
to school closure.
The Full Remote Learning online environment will help to keep people safe, provide educational
experiences and opportunities, and support the social-emotional and behavioral needs of staff
and students.
All Full Remote Learning experiences will be inclusive, engaging, flexible, and build capacity for
independent learning.
Instructional principles will be considered when providing learning for students and staff,
including differentiation, sound assessment practices, cultural awareness, diligent
communication, and intervention.
Curriculum and instruction during Full Remote Learning will be constructed and delivered in a
way that supports rigor, is relevant to students, and fosters relationships.
Terms and Definitions: Asynchronous Instruction:
Any instructional activity that does not require a student to be “live” with the teacher during a
specific period of time. These activities are intended to be completed independently by the
student, with the support of the teacher, and may include pre-recorded videos, reading,
research, practice, and the completion/submission of assignments/assessments.
Synchronous Instruction:
Real-time, interactive “meetings” designed for instruction or discussion that can take place as a
full class or in smaller groups. The teacher will have the flexibility in how synchronous
instruction will take place. For example, a teacher may instruct the entire class during one
“meeting,” or may choose to split the class into smaller groups, instructing the same
synchronous lesson multiple times for the purpose of small group discussion, etc. During Full
Remote Learning, synchronous instruction will take place at scheduled times at least twice a
week.
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210
26
Attendance:
Attendance for students will be recorded by each teacher daily in Skyward. Student attendance
will be determined by the teacher based upon participation in the synchronous meetings and/or
completion of assignments.
Grading:
During Full Remote Learning, grading is necessary to provide feedback, assess student learning,
and communicate to both students and parents how the learning is progressing. In order to
create the best possible opportunity for success for all learners:
Lincoln-Way District 210 will continue to use letter grades during Full Remote Learning.
Student work will be evaluated and reported as grades in the Skyward gradebook by the
instructor.
Student Participation & Verification:
Students will receive their assignments via email and Skyward. Teachers will monitor student
participation and completion via the Skyward gradebook. Teachers will notify counselors at the
end of each week of any student not participating in Full Remote Learning days. Counselors will
then work with students to encourage completion of assignments or assist them in obtaining
appropriate resources to complete assignments.
Social-Emotional Wellness & Supports: The social-emotional well-being of our students is a primary concern. Full Remote Learning is a different
educational experience, and it is important to be aware of students’ social-emotional needs during this
time. Students can experience greater emotions such as depression, anxiety, and social isolation.
Additionally, COVID-19 and other current events impacting society has underscored SEL as an essential
part of a high-quality education, focusing on relationships, resiliency, and collective problem-solving as
fundamental to teaching and learning. The district is dedicated to student support, and all Lincoln-Way
support staff will be available during Full Remote Learning.
Students, parents, and staff may reach out to any
of the below support staff if they are in need of academic or social-emotional support:
Counselors
Social Workers
Psychologists
Nurses
Teacher Availability: Teachers will monitor and respond to emailed questions between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:30 pm.
Questions will be responded to individually or in a mass communication with electronic resources.
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210
27
Teachers will use various means to stay connected with students including, but not limited to: webpage
updates, Teams updates, videos, emails, etc. to provide clarification and feedback.
Full Remote Learning Schedule: The Remote Learning daily schedule has been reduced so that students will need to focus only on half of
their classes per day: an “A” Day or a “B” Day.
Full Remote Learning Days will be Monday-Friday with four periods per day:
A Day Classes: Periods 1-4
B Day Classes: Periods 5-7, Zero
A Day Schedule B Day Schedule 8:00 – 9:00 Prep/Plan 9:00 – 10:00 1st Hour 10:15-11:15 2nd Hour 11:30 –12:15 Office Hours 12:15 – 1:15 3rd Hour 1:30 – 2:30 4th Hour
8:00 – 9:00 Prep/Plan 9:00 – 10:00 5th Hour 10:15-11:15 6th Hour 11:30 –12:15 Office Hours 12:15 – 1:15 7th Hour 1:30 – 2:30 Zero Hour
Curriculum & Instruction: Teachers have the autonomy during Full Remote Learning to modify the curriculum to meet students’
needs and teach the most critical components of the curriculum. Much of this curriculum planning has
taken place over the summer as teachers collaborated to prepare for Full Remote Learning.
Opening the School Year: Teachers should take the opportunity to build relationships with
students and cultivate a classroom culture that is supportive and caring. Building culture also
includes establishing routines, expectations for remote learning, gap remediation, and
assessments of readiness.
Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction: Teachers will use a complement of synchronous
and asynchronous instructional strategies. Each method provides opportunities to advance
learning and social-emotional wellness. Teachers will identify best practices for how and when
synchronous and asynchronous activities will be used.
