Lincoln High School
Jazz Band Auditions 2019-2020 School Year
Audition information:
To audition for the Lincoln High School Jazz Band, every student should be prepared to play the material
listed below. This material will be played live.
Students auditioning for Jazz Band will play these etudes at the end of their Symphonic Band audition. There
will be no sight-reading portion for jazz. Students auditioning for rhythm section spots (drums, bass, guitar,
and piano) do not necessarily have to be auditioning for a wind instrument spot in Symphonic Band.
Therefore, those students may be asked to play major scales (except drum set).
Saxophones, trumpets, trombones:
o The audition etude for your instrument. Start and Stop points are marked.
o The indicated tempo should be observed.
o Rests matter! Perform the piece as though you are playing with others.
*It should be noted that the “standard” jazz band instrumentation for wind players is: 5 saxes, 4
trombones, and 4 trumpets.
Piano, bass, and guitar:
o The audition etude for your instrument. Start and Stop points are marked.
o The indicated tempo should be observed.
o Rests matter! Perform the piece as though you are playing with others.
o Since these instruments are not auditioned for Symphonic Band, these players may be asked
to play some major scales. Have all 12 major scales ready.
o Piano and guitar may be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of chords used in jazz music.
*In the interest of active student participation and engagement, these spots will be limited to a
maximum of 2 students per instrument.
Drum Set:
o The audition etude for your instrument. Start and Stop points are marked.
o The indicated number of measures in the four different styles listed below to demonstrate
steady time keeping and rhythmic creativity. You should imagine yourself in a jazz combo
situation backing a horn soloist.
Rock (16 bars) quarter note = 76
Bossa Nova (16 bars) quarter note = 120
Swing (32 bars) quarter note = 144
*In the interest of active student participation and engagement, the drum set spots will be limited
to a maximum of 3 students total. These students may also be asked to rotate on vibes and drums.
Audition dates and times:
All Auditions will take place during the week of May 13 – 17 in the Lincoln Band room.
Current 9th grade through 11th grade students
The auditions will take place during the school day during your respective class times, or after school until
4:30pm. These etudes will be played at the end of your Symphonic Band audition.
Current 8th grade students
The Lincoln Band room will be open during the following dates and times for your auditions:
May 13 N/A – none
May 14 5-7pm
May 15 5-7pm
May 16 5-7pm
May 17 N/A – none
Students will be able to audition during those windows of time. There is no need to set up an appointment to
audition. These etudes will be played at the end of your Symphonic Band audition, so there is no need to
come out separately for each.
Rhythm Section students
Since many students that play bass and guitar do not also play a wind instrument, the students that play in
these spots are not required to be in Symphonic/Concert Band. Therefore, if you are a rhythm section player
and are not auditioning for Symphonic Band then you may set up an audition. The audition times can be after
7th period until 4:30pm, or during the times listed above (in the 8th grade students section).
