PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Happy October to your family as we move into autumn in northeast Ohio! Things are in full swing here at school and we have many programs and activities underway.

Reading Block instruction has begun at all grade levels. This “all hands on deck” approach gives each student at Lincoln 40 minutes of daily reading instruction targeted to their required skill level. Students are grouped in order to target those specific skills that result in needed intervention or enrichment opportunities. Reading Block is in addition to the core curriculum that students receive daily in language arts and depending on each grade level’s grouping needs may be delivered by a teacher other than your child’s homeroom teacher. Please contact me if I can provide further information to your family about this important part of our school day.

Finally, our entire student body has been working to earn “Caught Being a Leader” tickets in all areas of our school for following the rules and exhibiting leadership qualities of cooperation and respect. Each Friday, 5 tickets at each grade level are chosen at random and those students earn a turn to dive into my treasure box. Please see more information about “The Leader in Me” in this publication.

I look forward to working and celebrating with you this month,

Sandy Kozelka

Thank You!

Thanks to the Lakewood Education Foundation for supporting the following grants through the Margaret Warner Educational Grant. The committee has awarded Lincoln School three grants for the 2015-2016 school year:

Mrs. Thompson for Margaret Warner Volunteers: This is a community service organization that works in conjunction with the Lakewood Division of Aging and Giant Eagle to provide shopping assistance to vision impaired elderly. Fifth grade girls also benefit from participation in the club with field trips to Case Western Reserve University and Virginia Marti Design Institute to inspire them to achieve their potential.

Mrs. Miller for “Write On!”: This grant is for interested classrooms in grades 3-5 to support our Columbia Writing Initiative. Students personalize their composition books, give and get feedback on their writing from peers and teachers and participate in quarterly writing celebrations.

We will be celebrating Halloween with our 2nd annual costume parade. We will parade around the block stepping off at 1:50 pm. We will be inviting neighbors to come out on their porches to see our parade and “caught being a leader” ticket winners will lead the parade. Parents are also

invited to watch the parade, then the children will return to classrooms for a short party.

We will put some tables and chairs in the recess area or gym for you to wait for your child if you don’t want to go home and back again. Unfortunately, we cannot host everyone in all the classrooms, but welcome you to cheer on the parade.

Children who are participating will bring school-appropriate costumes to school in a bag clearly labeled with the student name. Students also need to leave weapon-like accessories at home as well as anything that is so integral to the costume that they would be heartbroken if it gets lost or broken.

Book Fair

Lincoln Wins $$ for Recess Equipment!

Thanks to everyone for coming out last weekend for Fitness Fits Everyone! Lincoln won first place for having the highest

percentage of students in attendance. That gives us $500 to spend on new recess equipment. We are earmarking it for our return to the Summit/Lakeland location in case there are extra pieces of equipment we may want for the long-term. Our

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

While I am proud of each and every one of our students that put in the hard work to advance their academic achievement, it is a nice bonus when some of our students earn recognition beyond our District for their accomplishments.

I would like to congratulate our Class of 2016 academic stars who have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists: Amanda Cabot and Jonathan Pizzo. Amanda and Jonathan were among the top 1% of scorers in the state of Ohio for the PSAT test they took as juniors. Just behind them in scoring are our Commended Scholars: Rose Beisel-Linn and Fox Milenski. They scored in the top 5%. Congratulations to all!

LINCOLN: LEARN. LEAD. SUCCEED.

Finally, I am kicking off a series of Superintendent Chats this month. I will be at the Ranger Café at Lakewood High on Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. to listen to what you have to say. Join me if you can!

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2015

Keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom.Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep?

Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half!

Get to know NFPA’s Fire Prevention Week website. Learn about the new resources to make your 2015 Fire Prevention Week a success.

When it comes to smoke alarms, it’s about “location, location, location”.The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.

NFPA is excited to share this important information so everyone better understands the life-saving value of home smoke alarms. Visit NFPA's "Smoke Alarm Central" for more information.
