Dear Band, I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. As I write this we are just beginning the second week of our 64 th Annual Band Camp! It is always such an amazing two weeks. Allen Vizzutti has joined us as a guest artist this week. He is the best of the best. I am certain a lot of you musicians’ lives will be changed. This should be a great year for Buffalo Marching Band. It will be a year of many changes for the band. 1. CBDNA! The Symphonic Band was selected to perform at the College Band Directors National Association Convention in Kansas City in March. 2. Dr. Tariq will continue to assist with the marching band. Additionally, Dr. Guglielmo Manfredi will join us as Associate Director of the Marching Band. 3. NEW UNIFORMS! Our new uniforms have arrived and each of you will be the first to march in them and will debut our new look. Thanks to all who served on the uniform committee and great work! 4. NEW MARCHING CONCEPT – AN ALL HOVERBOARD MARCHING BAND! Rather than marching we will each ride around the field on pre-programmed hoverboards. Percussion will use customized Segway Personal Transporters. It will be a marching revolution. This combined with the irresistible melodies of our musical selections from a Neil Diamond/Britney Spears Mashup will make for the most exciting show ever! 5. Note: (…for those of you who speak trombone) Number 4 above is a joke, but 1, 2, and 3 are true. We have a wonderful group of incoming students joining the buffalo band this fall. I am confident that they will have a profound impact on our organization. Thirty years ago, I myself was a new student arriving on campus, excited to be a part of this great band, and full of anticipation. I would have never guessed that one day I would have the opportunity to serve as the WTAMU marching band director. I am only the third director of the WTAMU marching band since 1963! Believe me, this is not an opportunity that I take lightly. I am so honored and humbled to be your director. I can’t wait to get started. Enclosed you will find a Band Information Card. Please return your card today. We need to hear from everyone so that we can start planning the first show. Check to see if we have you down for the appropriate instrument or color guard selection for marching band. Color guard and drumline members will begin prior to the winds. Please take note of the Early Band Schedule and the schedule of marching performances. If you still need to register for band!    Dear Friends: I hope that all of you are enjoying your summer break. We have an exceptional group of incoming students to welcome into the buffalo band this fall. Some of you attended WTAMU’s Band Camp this summer, while others worked as staff. I want to thank all of you for making our band camp a success.

Many of you have heard the exciting news about the WTAMU Symphonic Band. We were one of nine bands that were invited to perform at the National CBDNA Convention this March in Kansas City, Missouri. There were 32 university bands that applied to perform and the quality was extraordinary. Here is the list in alpha order:

1. Ball State University Wind Ensemble, Thomas Caneva, Conductor 2. Michigan State University Wind Symphony, Kevin Sedatole, Conductor 3. Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Mallory Thompson, Conductor 4. Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble, Joseph Missal, Conductor 5. University of Georgia Hodgson Wind Ensemble, Cynthia Johnston Turner, Conductor 6. University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, Paul Popiel, Conductor 7. University of Miami Frost Wind Ensemble, Robert Carnochan, Conductor 8. University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble, Jerry Junkin, Conductor 9. West Texas A&M University Symphonic Band, Don Lefevre, Conductor

The UT Wind Ensemble and the WTAMU Symphonic Band were the only two ensembles from the state of Texas to be selected to perform. I’m very excited to represent Texas, and even more excited to have the opportunity to showcase your talents in the stunning Kauffman Center for the performing arts in Kansas City. It is considered to be one of the finest concert halls in the nation. CBDNA is scheduled during Spring Break ‘17. Please reserve that week to be with us in Kansas City. It looks like we will be performing on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. The WTAMU Symphonic Band performed at the National CBDNA Convention in 2009, and I consider it to be one of the highlights of my musical life. I’m very excited about our CBDNA program. We will be opening with David Maslanka’s Morning Star. Mr. Doug Storey and Mr. John Tegmeyer will be featured on McAllister’s Freebirds, which takes its title and inspiration from the album by the iconic southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. I can’t wait to watch these two amazing musicians battle it out during this exciting piece for two solo clarinets. I have asked Dr. BJ Brooks to write us a new piece titled, The Butterfly Chaser to present at CBDNA. John Mackey has asked that we perform a new work of his titled, Liminal. It is an amazing work that was recently premiered by the United States Air Force Band in June of 2016. A digital recording of Liminal can be found on Mackey’s ostimusic.com website. In addition, I have asked my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Gary Garner to conduct Wagner’s beautiful Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral. Finally, Michael Daugherty contacted me and asked that we consider participating in a commission consortium that is being assembled by the Texas A&M University-Commerce Wind Ensemble and their Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma chapters. I want to thank the members of our Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma chapters for agreeing to participate in the consortium. War and Peace will be a wonderful 10-minute work that should create an exciting close to your CBDNA program. Audition music for membership into the Symphonic Band will be available when you arrive on campus. Auditions for the Symphonic Band will be held on Monday, October 10th and our first rehearsal as an ensemble will begin on Wednesday, October 12th and we will begin section rehearsals that week. I look forward to being with you on the stage of the Kauffman Performing Arts Center in Kansas City, Missouri in March 2017. This is going to be another great year at WTAMU. I’m excited about our opportunities to showcase your talents on the field and stage. Sincerely, Don Lefevre Director of Bands

HELLO INCOMING FRESHMEN!!! My name is Jordan English and I am one of your Drum Majors for the 2016-2017 school year. I am currently on summer tour with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps where we are traveling the country performing at various venues! I cannot begin to describe how excited I am for this marching band season and even more excited to meet all of the awesome new members. Just a little bit about myself, I’m from the DFW where I grew up in Mansfield, TX. To make a long story short, I struggled in high school between home life and school life and Blah blah blah, (insert motivational Band director that we all know and love). Anyways my band director in high school changed my life and I thanked him by attending the best university around WTAMU. I’m going into my final year at West Texas and I can’t begin to describe how blessed I’ve been to come into contact with not only the best educators a student could have, but also amazing people who make every day an adventure. Cherish your time from day one, it seems like it was yesterday that I was at my NSO and how I was so excited to finally be in a new chapter of life. While I am incredibly excited to be out the door, I’m also very appreciative of the experience I’ve had and anxiously anticipating this final year! Your time in this program will be tough but awesome and fun. Make friends and make good decisions. Go to class! P.S: I’m currently using an Admin computer with someone breathing down my neck :P See you soon! Go Buffs

Hey, everyone! My name is Bo Galvan and I will be the president of Kappa Kappa Psi for this next year. I'm from Laredo, Texas, which is about 9 hours away, so, like most of y'all, I'm far from home! I major in Music Education and I will be a fourth year student at WT. My primary instrument is the Euphonium, but I have a sweet spot for the Trombone... I slept through most of the summer, but I had the opportunity to see one of my sisters graduate from high school, to work band camp, and to learn how to teach. Who is Kappa Kappa Psi? Kappa Kappa Psi is a national honorary fraternity for college band members. We are a brotherhood that exists because of one particular trait- our passion for music. Our purpose is to provide service to the band(s). We serve the band and community, including the UIL Solo and Ensemble and the Greater Southwest Music Festival. Freshmen, I know how difficult it can be to move into your dorm. If you would like help, please let me know 24 - 48 hours in advance. The brothers and I would like provide our set of hands to anyone in need. If you have any questions about the marching band, Kappa Kappa Psi, or even about coping with homesickness, you are more than welcome to contact me. We will do our best to make your first year at WT as comfortable as possible. You are already a part of the WT family. Why not be a brother too? We would also like to extend our invitation to everyone interested in joining our brotherhood. Yours truly, Bo Galvan Cell: +1(956)319-0460 Email: [email protected]

 Greetings!

My name is Johanna Balboa and I am the President of Tau Beta Sigma for the 2016-2017 school year. I am a Music Education major from hot, humid and home of the Spurs, San Antonio Texas! I play the flute but during marching band you’ll find me spinning a flag or occasionally tossing a rifle. This will be my 5th year at WT and I can’t believe how fast the time has gone! This summer I visited family in Mexico, played in my first musical and worked at band camp as an RA…but enough about me.

Tau Beta Sigma is a co-educational national honorary band sorority dedicated to serving college band programs. The sisters of Tau Beta Sigma have been proudly serving the Sound of West Texas since 1949. We provide water during all of our marching rehearsals and football games as well as help set up for rehearsals. This past year both Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma raised $2,000 for band camp scholarships. In addition to helping our own band program we volunteer and perform service projects around campus as well as the surrounding community of Canyon/Amarillo.

Every year Tau Beta Sigma, along with Kappa Kappa Psi, offer our services to help freshman and transfer students move into their dorm rooms, in the Great Freshman Move In. If you would like or need help moving into your new home please contact me or Kappa Kappa Psi President, Bo Galvan, in advance to assemble an army of brothers and sisters!

If you have any questions about moving in, marching band, WT, or general life questions, feel free to contact me through Facebook, email or phone! Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will look forward to meeting you soon!

The annual Band Picnic will be Friday, August 26th 6p – 9p Band Picnic at Connor Park. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, foosball/football/ Frisbee and come have dinner catered by Pepitos!

Every year, we invite your parents, friends, significant others, aunts, uncles, cousins…(you get the idea) to come and have lunch with us in the Legends room. We invite the President (and it’s a new one this year, so we’ll want to get to know him). This year, it’s on September 24. It’s $15 per person for the luncheon, and we’ll also have discounted ticket for the football game. Your parents will get a flier, but it helps if you tell them about it, too. Besides, this gives them a chance to see your dorm room, a chance to see you march, and a chance for you to hit them up for some cash while they’re here.    This one is NOT

part of your band fee, sorry.

Your first meeting will be at 9a on Friday, August 19, at 9a in Northen 1010. Percussion will have try-outs, and guard will begin to learn their routines. You’ll need to have a parking permit to be able to park on campus. Everyone else can move into their dorms the weekend of August 20-21. Again, check-in times are from 4p – 6p. Drum Majors and DI’s You’ll meet in Northen 1010 at 9a. We’ll go over the schedule and your duties. Freshmen and transfer students Your first meeting will be Monday, August 22 at 1p in Northen 1010. Returning students You get an extra day of summer break. You’re welcome. You’ll report on Tuesday, August 23, at 1p. Meals & Dorms The band will cover cafeteria meals (sorry, no charging your pizza delivery to the band) until your meal cards kick in, but only AFTER you’re required to report (Friday lunch for Percussion & Guard, Monday dinner for Freshmen, Tuesday dinner for returning). There is no temporary housing…you’ll move right into the dorm you’re assigned to (which is a bonus if you have a roommate who isn’t a music major…you stake your claim before your roomie is allowed to move in). The cafeteria won’t be open for breakfast on the weekend until classes start, so grab a box of Coco-Puffs until then. But that’s just breakfast, and just the weekends before classes. The Band Fee The band fee this year is $25. It gets you your band t-shirt (which is $10 if you buy it separately), free admission to the Halloween and Holiday parties, and the reception at the end of the year, Bring cash, check or DC/CC. Sorry, we can’t take it off your gold card.
