Christmas on Main Street Sparkles with Holiday Spirit

This Week’s Feature Story

As the song goes: “It’s beginning to look a lot like

Christmas.” And well it should with the 13th annual

Christmas on Main Street getting underway this

weekend. The holiday extravaganza, which will run

from 11am to midnight on Friday and Saturday will fea-

ture 45 booths with vendors selling a Santa’s sack of

holiday goodies. There will be homemade candies,

toys, Christmas tree ornaments, jewelry, as well as

shoes and apparel. Favorite locally made gift items

include a variety of crafts, West Indian dolls and cro-

chet items.

“Christmas on Main Street gets everyone in the

holiday mood,” says Lynette George, who along with

Janis Brathwaite and Dolores Christopher, is on the

organizing committee. Lynette has had a booth at the

event for 12 of its 13 years.

Lisa Gray who owns The Gallery, a Main Street

shop selling artwork and gift items, is also a regular

participant. Christmas on Main Street, she says is

good for both local businesses and shoppers: it’s a

way for Main Street stores to bring in additional busi-

ness and shoppers can take advantage of discounts

offered by some of the

stores.

evenings. The festive

lineup includes the

Razor Blades, Morris

Mark, the Lashing Dogs, Uprising and Leon and the

Hot Shots, plus adult and youth steel bands. The

Purple Dragon will also put on a karate exhibition.

Throughout the event, a host of local taste treats will

be on sale including patties, pastries, mutton and

BBQ chicken, as well as such traditional fare as

guavaberry wine, coconut tart and black cake.

An opening ceremony at 6pm with remarks by

Governor Boyd McCleary and government ministers

will kick off the evening celebrations. It’s an event that

sparkles with holiday spirit – don’t miss it.

I had first seen UB40 as a teenager at a concert in

Manchester in the UK and since then have always

enjoyed their reggae/ska musical style. Some of their

music, especially in the early days was quite political,

in fact the band’s name UB40 originated from the

well-used Unemployment Benefit Form and one of

their hits, One in Ten was a sad reflection of the unem-

ployment figures at the time. I must admit though that

my love of their music was more about their rhythmic

melodies than their politics and of course, the unique

voice of their lead singer and front-man Ali Campbell.

Just a few bars of any of their songs could immediate-

ly conjure up images of laid back, sunny places – even

on the coldest days in rainy Manchester!

Ironically, the weather on Saturday was reflecting

the rainy climate of my home town, and at times the

crowd danced under a sea of umbrellas – however

that did nothing to deter everyone from enjoying the

performances from an eclectic line up of international

and local artists and of course, the man himself, Ali

Campbell.

At around 10:30pm, Campbell and his band

“DEP” came on stage, and after all the anticipation,

the crowd went wild! As promised, Campbell per-

formed hits from the UB40 albums and everyone

along to every song.

Much loved classics

ensued such as,

Lonely Girl, Stick byMe, Kingston Townand my own personal

favorite, the impossi-

bly romantic Can’tHelp Falling in Love. It was a great atmosphere andCampbell “shouted out” to the crowd his respect for

keeping in full party mode – despite the inclement

weather! And, although the crowd had swelled by this

time, being so close to the stage where you could see

the musicians clearly gave the concert a special,

almost private party atmosphere.

Like all good things, it was over way too quickly

and Campbell closed his hour long set with the much-

loved hit, Red Red Wine. After that though, almost oncue, the tolerable rain become a torrential downpour

and everyone except for a couple of die-hard fans ran

for shelter. I am sure though that the band would have

returned for an encore or two if not for the downpour

as they clearly enjoyed performing here – a labour of

love, you could say.

Dear Kim,

Maybe that’s the reason you are living with your

mom and not your dad. Maybe he is not the best role

model for you at this time. Sometimes when parents

are not around having to do the day-to-day parenting,

they forget how much of a firm hand they need to

keep on teenagers and sometimes they try to over-

compensate for being absent by being extra ‘nice’.

You are still in your mom’s house and still in high

school so just take it easy. You will have all the time

you need to make lots of decisions like that. Just focus

on finishing school with good grades, so you can pur-

sue your dreams, be it college or whatever else.

Have you thought of why you want this tattoo? Is

it because your friends have one, or does it show

some level of coolness or is there another reason.

Don’t allow friends to pressure you into doing any-

thing you are not ready for and remember there are

many other ways to show how cool you are.

Tattoos might be easy to get but they are very dif-

ficult and expensive to remove and if you get one

painted on and regret it, who will pay to remove it?

They are also painful and if not properly done, can

result in infections from dirty needles.

So while I am sure your mom has noticed that

you are not a little girl anymore, prove it to her by

being mature and responsible and waiting until the

most appropriate time to make a decision about get-

ting a tattoo.

TCM Says ‘Merry Christmas!’ with Holiday Film DocumentaryIf you don’t think it’s

beginning to look a

lot like Christmas,

Movies is ready to

take care of that.

Many clips from

favorite holiday films are compiled, along with related

interviews, in Merry Christmas! — a new episode of thechannel’s recurring A Night at the Movies documentaryseries premiering Tuesday, Dec. 6. From It’s a WonderfulLife and Miracle on 34th Street to White Christmas andNational Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, many of the toptitles are represented.

Christmas Vacation star Chevy Chase is among

those commenting on his favorite yuletide classics. Also

appearing are Chazz Palminteri, former MGM child star

Margaret O’Brien, actress-author Deborah Raffin, author

Julie Salamon, and Karolyn Grimes, a co-star of It’s aWonderful Life.

Merry Christmas! was written, produced and direct-ed by a master of documentaries on moviemaking:

Laurent Bouzereau, whose behind-the-scenes efforts

have enhanced numerous home video releases from

Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivagoand Ben-Hur to Backto the Future, Jurassic Park and Avatar. For this article, hespoke about his fresh approach to showcasing

Christmas films.Q: Since there have been other specials of this sort,

how did you decide on your take?A:My No. 1 concern was that it was such a vast sub-

ject. You can’t expect to cover everything, so I wanted to

first have an appreciation of A Christmas Carol — which

is one of the most definitive books about the holiday —

and the films that have been based on it. Then I wanted

to move into It’s a Wonderful Life, which is always shownaround Christmas, and then it was just a question of

breaking down the other themes that I felt represented

the genre best.

I contacted a very eclectic group of people, and I let

them guide me to what their favorite films were. Chevy

Chase added humorous touches, and Julie Salamon

wrote a book about the Christmas tree at (New York’s)

Rockefeller Center. And Karolyn Grimes is one of the few

survivors of It’s a Wonderful Life, so it was important tohave her.


The Assassination of Abraham LincolnOne of the most compelling documentaries I have

seen recently under the acclaimed PBS American

Experience series, the docudrama, The Assassination ofAbraham Lincoln replays in intimate detail the time justbefore and after his assassination. Written, produced

and directed by Barak Goldman, what makes this histor-

ical piece so riveting, aside from the subject matter, is

the use of actors playing out key scenes interspersed

with commentary by well known authors and historians

such as Doris Kearns Goodwin, (Team of Rivals), whohas penned several political biographies.

As the life of assassin, John Wilkes Booth unravels

in a country still deeply divided between north and

south, one gets a glimpse of his motivation, through

Booth’s personal journal and letters and snapshots into

his famous theatrical family for whom he was a mere

understudy anxious to leave a lasting mark. A massive

manhunt ensued after the April 14, 1865 assassination at

Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC. Booth was eventually

flushed out of a burning barn where he was hiding in the

Maryland countryside, and died hours later from a gun-

shot wound inflicted as he tried to escape. Eight other

co-conspirators stood before a military trial, of these,

three men and one woman, Mary Serat, the owner of the

boardinghouse where Booth resided were hanged.

However, the true beauty of the documentary

focuses on the inner life of Lincoln, the great statesman

and reconciling father of a nation ravaged by the Civil

War. In his second inaugural address (he only lived one

month into his second term) he pens the famous words,

“With malice towards none and charity for all, let us bind

up the country’s wounds.” His presidency will be forever

linked to the cause of black freedom and the preserva-

tion of the American

Republic for which he

wrote, “I expect to

maintain this contest

until successful, or

until I die or am con-

quered or the country

forsakes me.” As the

funeral train that car-

ried his casket as it wound its way on a 12-day journey

across the nation, those who may have forsaken him

were also those who mourned him.

Saturday’s Highland Spring College Classic Series16th season finale concluded with a bang and anotherrecord performance for Meriel Steadman—whoimproved her time in every run over the four races sheentered. The series ender also saw the crowning of thevarious division champions and runners up, whom wesalute today.

Besides Steadman and Khiry Creque as overallfemale and male winners—the first for both—the RotaryClub of Tortola must be highly commended on winningtheir 7th successive Cross Country title, even beatingback the charging Rotaract Club. Seven times in a row foranything—especially in a team oriented event—is noeasy feat.

The Cedar School PTA—with record setting AdamCole leading the way—won their second successive titlein the Community Partners Cross Country division, whileSt. Georges Secondary won their first division title.

Althea Scatliffe Primary School—who once domi-nated their division—was victorious for the second yearin a row in their Primary Schools Cross Country segment.

“All in all, it was a very good series overall ,” racedirector Stephanie Russ Penn said. “I congratulate notonly the respective division winners, but everyone whoparticipated in the event.”
