President

Dr. Walt Griffi n Mike Cerino

Mike Cerino was named Limestone College’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2008. He is the fi fth Director in the history of Saints Athletics and had served as Senior Associate Athletics Di-rector since the summer of 2006.

In addition to overseeing the athletics department, Cerino had a 15-year tenure as the head coach of the Saints’ highly successful men’s lacrosse program. He is the school’s all-time wins leader with a record of 128-66 (.660) and was the fi rst coach in the program’s history. In his fi rst three years as Director of Athletics, Cerino has transformed the athletic department. Under his leadership, Limestone has completed an NCAA insti-tutional self-study and compliance blue print review, conducted a gender equity review to ensure the de-partment’s compliance with Title IX and expanded the athletic training department in both staffi ng and equip-ment. He has also led the effort to re-brand the athletic marks and logos, spearheaded a redesign of the athletics website, and secured an exclusive and favorable buying contract with a sports apparel company to support the various athletic programs. Additionally, Cerino secured the necessary funding to add fi eld hockey and men’s vol-leyball all while maintaining the budgetary goals of the department. The 43-year-old Cerino founded the men’s lacrosse program in 1989 and built it into a national champion in just 11 years, winning a Division II title in 2000. He recently stepped away from a coaching career in which he guided two elite programs, Limestone College and Washington and Lee University, and compiled an over-all record of 181-90 (.668) over 21 seasons. During his coaching career he won a total of eight conference championships. As a result of all of his efforts with the Saints, Cerino was inducted into the Limestone College Hall of Fame in the fall of 2004. During his coaching career he was named Conference Coach of the Year a total of four times and was named Street and Smith’s College Lacrosse USA Division II Coach of the Year. He is also a three-time recipient of the Jim “Ace” Adams National Sportsmanship Award. In addition to his stellar college coaching career, Cerino also guided the Charlotte Latin School boy’s lacrosse team to an appearance in the NCISAA 2001 State Playoffs. He has mentored 49 USILA All-Americans and in 1996 was a coach for the South team in the 53rd Annual Division I North/South Classic All-Star Game. While his presence on the lacrosse fi eld will be missed, Cerino’s role as Athletic Director will enable him to make sure that each of Limestone College’s 22 teams will have the means to be just as successful. Cerino resides in Greer, S.C., with his wife Christine and his three children, Ryan, Caitlyn and Allison.

Director of Athletics

Dr. Walt Griffi n has been President of Limestone Col-lege since 1992. During Dr. Griffi n’s presidency, Lime-stone has more than tripled its enrollment, completed

major renovations of 10 campus buildings, and operated with a balanced budget for 18 successive years. Immediately prior to coming to Limestone, Dr. Griffi n was Director of the Cincinnati Center for the College of Undergraduate Studies of The Union Institute. Most of Dr. Griffi n’s teaching and adminis-trative experience was gained at Upper Iowa Uni-versity, a small private liberal arts institution. In ad-dition to serving as a professor of American history for 23 years, Dr. Griffi n was chairman of the History Department and of the Division of Social Sciences and Business Administration, Faculty Chairman, Act-ing Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Director of Off-Campus Programs. Dr. Griffi n’s academic background is in the fi eld of American history. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Loyola College, Baltimore, and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the University of Cincinnati. His Ph.D. dissertation is a biography of George W. Goethals, the U.S. Army Engineer who supervised the building of the Panama Canal. He is the author of scholarly articles ap-pearing in the Indiana Magazine of History, Pacifi c Northwest Quarterly, Colorado Magazine, and North Carolina Libraries. He has also served on the faculties of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Mt. St. Mary’s College in Maryland, and been a Taft Teaching Fellow at the University of Cincinnati. In the political arena, Dr. Griffi n has been a city councilman, a candidate for statewide political of-fi ce, and the manager of a U.S Congressional cam-paign. He also coached men’s and women’s college tennis for 8 years and in 1985 was voted the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year. Dr. Griffi n and his wife, Penni Griffi n, Assistant Professor of Social Work at Limestone, have four children - Megan, Rebecca, Kathleen, and Shawn - and 8 grandchildren.

Head Coach • Eighth SeasonCorey Fox

Corey Fox was named head coach of the Limestone College women’s basketball program in January 2004, taking over for longtime coach Dennis Bloomer midway during the 2003-04 season. Prior to his hiring, Fox served as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team for two full seasons. That season he compiled a 2-12 record. Entering the 2010-11 campaign, Fox has compiled a 74-134 overall record in 7 ½ seasons at the helm of the Saints. During his tenure he has steadily turned the women’s basketball program around, going from a 4-22 overall record in his fi rst full year to posting winning records in two of the last three seasons, including a program record 17-11 mark in 2009-10. Following his fi rst full season, Fox guided Limestone to a 12-17 record, tripling the

program’s win total from the year before and leading the team to more wins in one season than it had had over the three previous campaigns. The Saints reached double-digit victories for the second consecutive season as they posted a 10-19 record during the 2006-07 season, marking the fi rst time since the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons that feat had been accomplished. In 2007-08, Fox and Limestone delivered a 16-15 record, snapping a string of six straight losing seasons and fell one win shy of tying the program record for victories in a season. Two years later, after a 13-15 record the following season, the Saints put together one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. In 2009-10, the Saints fi nished with a 17-11 overall record and a 15-7 mark in Conference Carolinas play, earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Last season’s win total matched the 2000-01 squad with the most in program history while the 11 losses were the fewest by a Limestone women’s basketball team in school history. The .607 winning percentage was also a program best while the 15-7 mark in conference play equaled the all-time mark set by the 2000-01 team. It was also the program’s best fi nish since becoming an NCAA Division II member. As a player, Fox played just one season for the Saints men’s basketball team during the 2000-01 season but holds a number of single season and career records. After playing two seasons for Danville Area Community College and one season at Western Illinois, he set Top-10 single season marks for Limestone with 395 points (5th), 187 assists (1st), 67 three-pointers (4th), an 83.2% free throw percentage (5th) and a 44.4% mark from three-point range (2nd). His free throw and three-point percentage marks are both second on the all-time list while he ranks fi fth in Saints history in assists.

This is accomplished by primarily utilizing free-weight, ground based and multi-joint explosive exercises. Limestone’s strength and conditioning program is one of the premier programs in NCAA Division II. The department is housed in the Walt Griffi n Center, a 3,900-square foot weight training facility. All 22 of the College’s varsity teams train at the facility. More than $100,000 has been spent on new equipment and facility upgrades since 2005. Within Conference Carolinas, Limestone is the only program with two full-time strength and condition-ing coaches in Curt Lamb and Lance Farmer. They have no other coaching responsibilities, making them available for individual assistance for any athlete throughout the year. Lamb is certifi ed through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a level one club coach through the United States Weightlifting Association (USWA). He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from Iowa State and a master’s degree from Central Missouri State. Limestone

One of the premier Division II athletic programs in the nation, the Limestone College Athletics Department of-fers student-athletes more than just the opportunity to be successful on the fi eld. The program’s fl exibility, combined with Limestone’s smaller on-campus enrollment, offers the student-athlete an unparalleled opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics, so much so that many students are members of multiple teams. Much like the College itself, the athletics program has a rich and storied history that is peppered with a great deal of success and leadership. Established in 1972, Lime-stone athletics competed as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) until 1997. The Saints experienced great success during that 25-year period, culminating with a National Championship by the 1984 men’s golf team. They also claimed their second na-tional title that year as a member of that golf team claimed an individual title. Beginning in 1991, Limestone earned membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. In 1998, it began competing for NCAA Championships with membership in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference, currently known as Conference Carolinas. The Saints have remained in the league that gave them their fi rst championship opportunity at the NCAA level and currently have 18 of their 22 teams competing within the Conference. Of the four sports that are not a part of the conference, none is offered by Conference Carolinas as an offi cial sport. Men’s and women’s swimming compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference while both fi eld hock-ey and wrestling are independents. Limestone College’s athletics program has a history of helping to pave the way for new sports in the Southern part of the United States. In 1990, Mike Cerino joined the Saints as head coach of the fi rst men’s lacrosse program in the State of South Carolina while the swimming programs are the only Division II ones in the State and are among the few within the Carolinas. In 2009, Limestone once again led the way with a pair of programs not often seen in this part of the country. The fi eld hockey program began play that season, making them the southern-most fi eld hockey program among all three divisions of the NCAA. They were joined later that athletic season as the men’s volleyball program took the court in the spring of 2010. One of fi ve schools within Conference Carolinas to offer the sport, the Saints will soon be a part of the only Division II only men’s volleyball conference in the country as the league will qualify for an NCAA automatic bid in 2014. Throught out the years, 12 of Limestone’s 22 teams have been nationally ranked, including both pro-grams in golf, lacrosse, swimming and tennis. One of those programs, baseball, came into existence at the hand of a Hall-of-Famer in 1987. Major League Baseball 300-game winner and two-time Cy Young award winner Gaylord Perry started the program and served as the fi rst head coach in team history for the fi rst three years. More than 140 Limestone student-athletes have earned All-American status and a number have gar-nered Academic All-American honors while the athletic program itself has earned high praise. Following the 2008-09 season, Limestone placed 52nd out of 290 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup standings for Division II. That marked the highest fi nish for the program and the third straight season that the Saints had improved their ranking.

Page 31: Limestone College 2010-11 Women's Basketball Media Guide

Limestone College was established in 1845 by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son, Dr. William Curtis, both of whom were distinguished scholars born and educated in England. Limestone was the fi rst women’s college in South Carolina and one of the fi rst in the United States. In the late 1960’s, Limestone be-came fully coeducational. The campus is a unique combination history and

progress, with ten of our campus buildings included on the National register of Historic Places. Since 1991, Limestone has completed renovations of several of its historic campus structures. Among these are the Montgomery Classroom Building, Ebert Residence Hall, Carroll Fine Arts Building, Hamrick Hall of Science, Eunice Ford Residence Hall, Dixie Lodge Student Center, Granberry Art Building and, most recently, the Winnie Davis Hall of History. While the College’s ties to the past are visible in the many historic structures, these renovated facilities, along with the Walt Griffi n Center, now house the modern technology nec-essary to maintain Limestone’s reputation as an outstanding liberal arts college. A non-denominational Christian college, Limestone is an accredited, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts institution chartered by the State of South Carolina. Our programs lead to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Associate of Science or Associate of Arts Degree. Today, Limestone College enrolls approximately 850 students in its day program and approximately 2,500 in the Extended Campus, which includes various sites throughout South Carolina and Internet courses.
