LIMERICKJAZZ HISTORY OF THE JAZZ SCENE IN LIMERICK

A LONG time ago, in an underground cellar in a quiet part of town, Limerick Jazz had its genesis. The 1988 occasion was a memorable one, Honor Heffernan and Louis Stewart were in town and it was cool for cats in what was then The Granary Bar “Honor Heffernan and Louis Stewart were huge names then and this is one of the biggest jazz gigs ever in Limerick. Jazz was not happening then”.John Daly, a percussionist, was the man who arranged that gig with Len McCarthy, an experi-enced Sax player who came up from Cork to back the gig. John, who teaches at the Peter Dee Acad-emy of Music recalls, “the interest in jazz for me was always there. You just got the odd jazz gig in Limerick then and we said we’d try to get some-thing steadier going. I’d made myself known to musicians such as Louis Stewart and Len McCarthy and Paddy O’Sullvan and we got that gig going. Len, Paddy and myself were the original three and Limerick Jazz really started from that Granary gig. Guitarist Ray Fitzgerald is another musician who has been a real inspiration over the years”.The Pink Elephant is another name with reso-nance from the past. It was while playing there that John Daly met up with Evan Morrissey, who

was recording a jazz gig for his own library pur-poses. As we know, all great clubs demand a stairs entry. It’s about the excitement of going un-dergound or that of seeking heaven. Upstairs in Dolan’s, its chill room of stone walls, candlelight, terrace and essentially, superb acoustics, now houses Limerick Jazz and its musical strains.

GOING UNDERGROUND“Jazz was almost underground in Limerick in the 1980s,” recalls Tony Rodgers, one of the first com-mittee members. “The local quartet, led by Bryan Meehan, was playing in pubs like Costellos and The Granary and backing guests like Richie Buckley and Len McCarthy, playing mostly for a pittance or whatever could be collected at the door. Originally founded by Bryan Meehan, John Daly, Evan Mor-rissey and Paul O’Sullivan, the Limerick Jazz Soci-ety elected a formal committee in 1992, including myself as secretary. And within a few years we had approached the Arts Council successfully for funding, in 1995 receiving the paltry sum of 1,000 pounds but setting the precedent in being the first jazz society to receive such funding. Jazz, a four letter word, was becoming respectable”.

FRI25th The alto saxophonist PERICO SAMBEAT is regarded as one of the great Spanish

jazz musicians. He has earned a huge reputation for his extraordinary career both inside and outside of Spain. Over twenty albums as a leader and more than a hundred as a sideman have highlighted his work with greats like Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwin-kel, Tete Montoliu, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and many others.

Over 20 years of professional experience has earned him an international reputation. With a strong classi-cal base, he began his studies of modern music in the Taller de Musics in Barcelona, where he had teach-ers like Zé Eduardo. In 1991 he moved to New York where he joined the New School. There he played with masters such as Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb and Joe Chambers.

His prolific career has led to participation in festivals and programmes world-wide, and to recording albums including Uptown Dance with Mike Mossman and David Kikoski (released on EGT); Passages with Gerardo Nuñez (Resistencia); Friendship with Brad Meldhau, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jeff Ballard (ACT); Fla-menco Big Band with Miguel Poveda, Javier Colina and others (Universal-Verve); Dance Guaná, CMS Trio’s third album with Javier Colina and Marc Miralta; Ballads with his quartet (Borja Barrueta, Bernardo Sassetti and again Colina); and Elastic, a quintet with Jeff Ballard, Eric Legnini, Andre Fernandes and Thomas Bramerie. “An impressive demonstration of the straight-ahead bop piano lineage.” The Irish Times

As jazz settles into its second century, the rude health of the piano trio worldwide belies the notion that the creative seam of acoustic piano, bass and drums has been mined to exhaustion, and Ire-land has its own high achievers. Described by The Irish Times as a textbook example of the ongoing vitality of the tradition, PHIL WARE’s trio has set a new benchmark for the piano trio here. Born in England but a Dubliner since 2000, Ware’s contribution to the Irish jazz resurgence has been generous to a fault, his tasteful and always supportive playing a leitmotif of many leading groups. As with so many pianists, he has a special affinity for singers, but his pen-chant for melody is best appreciated when he performs with stalwarts bass-ist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady and their hallmark deep groove. First among these equals is Ware, swinging hard with the instrument’s full potential, from its gentle intimacy to its orchestral sweep, captured beneath his hands. Stride for stride, a piano trio from Ireland worthy of the genre’s illustrious history. www.improvisedmusic.ie

THE JOST PROJECT SEPTET The music of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Donovan, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, and others…PAUL JOST is an eclectic artist who is a singer, musician, arranger and com-poser. Originally a drummer, over the years his musical talents extended to guitar and harmonica, but it’s his voice that truly makes him a stan-dout. His vocals are so soulful that music critic Buster Maxwell wrote... “he nearly single-handedly reclaims the male voice as a valid and critically important jazz instrument.” Paul has been performing worldwide in recent years and is proud to have a regular date at the famed Jazz Club in New York, 55 Bar. He was recently commissioned to re-imagine Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” album as jazz and he headlined at the Exit 0 Jazz Festival presenting this music to cheers in the crowds. Reaching new audiences for jazz is the goal of The Jost Project, the band launched by vibraphonist Tony Miceli and bassist Kevin MacConnell, in which Paul is vocalist and arranger. Their CD, ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ (Dot Time Records), has received very positive reviews. In Jazz in Europe, a critic wrote... “The Jost Project is without a doubt one of the most creative bands I have heard for years and vocalist Paul Jost one of the best male jazz vocalists since Mark Murphy.”

As a group leader, sideman, and recording artist, he has performed with numerous top musicians includ-

ing David Liebman, Jimmy Bruno, Ken Peplowski, John Swana, Larry McKenna, and many others. “Miceli’s vibes playing is nothing short of phenomenal, as he moves effortlessly from fiery virtuoso runs to gentle, legato improvisations on the ballads.”

RICHIE BUCKLEYWith his unique style and vir-tuoso technique, Richie Buckley, a self-taught saxophone player, is internationally recognised as one of Ireland’s leading jazz per-formers.

He has been described as “extraordinary” (Irish Times, 2001), “something of a genius... [with] a world reputa-tion amongst saxophonists” (Irish Times,1999) and a musician whose “playing manages to be simultane-ously passionate and gentle, romantic and elegiac.” (Sunday Independent, 2001)

“Linley has been a part of the Irish music scene for over twenty years and since then he has juggled a career as a trumpet player with being a BBC Jazz Broadcaster and an educator with Making Music Workshop.”

There have been many career highlights in the past with significant per-formances or recordings with Paul Brady, Van Morrison, Foy Vance, Elean-or McEvoy, Jacqui Dankworth, ASIWYFA, Oppenheimer and Gareth Dunlop to name a few, but he is working just as hard as ever these days and is celebrating success with his own recent album Taylor Made with his quartet which features Johnny Taylor piano, Dan Bodwell bass and Dominic Mullen drums.

In the last few months Linley has recorded a new album with the McHughs band DANAMEILANA 6 which has considerable radio play in Ireland as a whole leading to the band opening for Van at the Dunluce Festival in June, and then playing with Van on New Year’s Eve at the Harp Bar Belfast, a gig none of us will ever forget! He has just recorded his latest album with his Dublin based Quartet, IN TRANSITION, which was released at the Brilliant Corners Festival 26 March 2014. To crown an amazing period of work, Linley was asked to play with Snow Patrol at a charity fundraiser for Alzheimers at the Limelight on 30 December 2014 “...and it was one hell of a night!”.

JAZZ TRAIL

For the Limerick Jazz Festival in 2015, a music show for children, STOMPING IN WONDERLAND , will take place on Saturday 26th September at 10.30am at Ormston House. Stomping In Won-derland is an interactive performance for and with children aged 0-7, and bigger people!

2015 is the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland, and some of the songs in the show are based on the fantastic and enduring Alice in Wonderland story. Ruti Lachs, who performs the show, has written many songs aimed at the 0 to 7 age group, but also musically attractive to older children and adults. Children join in, waving their trunks like an elephant (Elemouse), stomping in imaginary woods, swimming in imagi-nary lakes, playing triangles and tam-

bourines and shakers (Happy Happy Wednesday), jumping and twirling and dancing. And then collapsing to the floor for some peaceful songs (Centi-pede), before jumping up again (Jump) and turning into a magical creature that creates breakfast (Breakfast Fairies). Children will get to sing, dance, and play, and stomp about a lot!

Ruti has a Cheshire cat, a dormouse, and some teddy friends, and she shows the children some very inter-esting musical instruments, including one that sounds like an elephant! and one that sounds like a mouse! It’s very exciting, and all action. This is a bril-liant show that the children will love. And the bigger people can also enjoy joining in the stomping, happy fun! 10.30am | Free

GALWAY YOUTH ORCHESTRA is the longest established community orches-tra in the West of Ireland and is also amongst the longest running orches-tras in the country. It has grown and flourished since 1982 and celebrated 30 years of young people playing together in 2012.

The idea of creating an ensemble which would perform under the banner of the Galway Youth Orchestra started with a young Cork graduate, Maire Ni Dhuibhir in Spiddal and developed initially by gathering players from school orchestras in Galway City, Loughrea and Tuam. Very quickly this orchestra developed an identity of its own and since then the G.Y.O. has been shaped and developed by a number of conductors and hundreds of young players.

Founded in 1982 Galway Youth Orchestra has over 140 Musi-cians who are organised into Junior Orchestra, Intermedi-ate Orchestra, Senior Orches-tra and Galway Youth Jazz Or-chestra. JOHN FLEMMING who is a founding member is also Musical Director for the band.
