Hello Friends! Welcome. Mid November begins our early winter interim, a unique session that allows students to experiment with new mediums, pursue their own projects during dedicated open studio in every department, or take unique classes not offered at other times of the year. Some students use this time to make holiday gifts for their loved ones, or give themselves the gift of time to be creative. This year, things are significantly shifting at Lillstreet. We’ve offered several new classes, remodeled the glass and textiles classrooms, and developed the teambuilding and special events department. The gallery has expanded its selection to support more artists in a variety of mediums while showcasing works through compelling and thoughtful exhibitions. Through partnerships and local events, we have connected with Chicagoans more than ever before. In November and December, we invite you to our weekly jewelry trunk shows where you can connect with local artists and collect their one-of-a-kind pieces. On November 30th, we hope you celebrate with us at our inaugural Student and Faculty Art Fair during our 37th Annual Holiday Party. CLAY FOR THE LONGEST NIGHT(5 weeKs)

Use clay to explore the meaning of the year’s longest night, when, in the northern hemisphere, increasing darkness changes to increasing light. Consider how people around the world have marked the significance of the winter solstice and shape a special object for personal use. We will use these objects in our own celebration during the final class.

Focusing on the integration of handbuilding and wheel throwing, this class will help develop new techniques and reinforce current skills. Starting at the wheel participants will learn methods of altering such as darting, slab building, and faceting to create engaging pieces. By adding, subtracting, and manipulating parts the student will be able to explore their own formal aesthetic.

LAMP-MAkING(4 weeKs)

The focus of this class will be to learn to make handbuilt wall sconces and hanging lamps using slabs and cardboard templates. Application of glass and/or mica as well as wiring will also be taught as students complete their lamps. Basic handbuilding skills necessary.

We will explore various painted and carved tile traditions. Students will design, model, press and glaze tiles creating multiples and one-of-a-kind pieces as well.

SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA(4 weeKs)

Weekly demonstrations for this class will concentrate on the best forms to highlight the soda slips and capture the soda atmosphere as you make pots for the soda kiln. Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results. You will learn that the use of glazes is also different from Cone 10, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. Prerequisite: at least one year of experience working with clay or instructor’s permission.

SCULPTING FROM LIFE(4 weeKs)

Working from a model, learn to sculpt or improve upon your figure sculpting. Students will learn a step-by-step approach to sculpting the human head. Emphasis will be placed on, the planes of the face, facial anatomy and expression. We will also explore finishing techniques and preparing your sculpture for kiln firing. All levels are welcome.

worKsHoPs HOLIDAY BIRD ORNAMENTS(1 DAy)

In this holiday themed workshop, students will get to create bird shaped ornaments and glaze them in all colors of the rainbow. We will be using terra cotta clay to build the simple birds forms and after they are built, students will be able to decorate the ornaments with a variety of designs and colors. The ornaments will make great gifts and bring a homemade touch to any one’s holiday decor. Fun for all ages.

HOLIDAY MUGS(1DAy)

In this workshop students will be able to create a one of kind ceramic mug great for the cold winter months. Using terra cotta slabs of clay students will build the cup form and add handles. After the basic mug form is created, the possibilities for decoration are endless. We can add names to personalize the mugs, draw winter themed images or just paint the mugs in different colors. Add a packet of cocoa and these mugs will make the perfect gift.

This multilevel class explores the three-dimensional possibilities of hard waxes for carving and soft waxes for modeling. This workshop is focused on creating unique chains and findings through the technique of reticulation, taking the surface of the metal to its melting point to create an organic texture. Learn to create beautiful bracelets from a single piece of metal using hammering and forming processes. For the first bracelet, simple forging techniques will result in an elegant, linear bangle. FABRICATING WITH TIN(4 weeKs)

Each week we will learn a new component of fabricating jewelry with tin and other metals. Using the hydraulic press in this multi-step process you’ll make uniquely shaped dies, cut and press tin and then use the tin to make finished pieces. GLASS BEADMAKING, FUSING & CASTING EXPLORE SEVERAL DIFFERENT GLASS TECHNIQUES SUCH AS BEADMAKING, FUSING, KILN CASTING AND SCULPTURE. GLASS BEAD OPEN STUDIO Work on projects and improve skills outside of class in our highly recommended open studio. Punch cards are available for students enrolled in a class at the reduced cost of $60 (5 sessions for $12 each); current students may also purchase single sessions for $14 each. Punch cards are also available for those not enrolled in a class for $85 (5 sessions for $17each). Glass and mandrels are available for sale; tools will be available for use. A monitor will be on hand to answer questions but not instruct. Punch cards may be purchased at the front desk.

GLASS FUSING OPEN STUDIOWork on projects outside of class in open studio exclusively for fusing. This time is for students who have taken at least two 4 or 5 week fusing classes in the past 6 months. The fee is $25 and includes one 8 ½ x 11 box to fill, the use of tools, firings and scrap glass. An extra $18 will be charged for each additional 8 ½ x 11 box filled. There is a variety of sheet glass for sale in the studio. A monitor is on hand to help answer questions but not to instruct. You must sign up online or in person at least one week prior to your session and pre-pay the OS fee of $25. Permission from the instructor is required.

Design and construct simple glass bars composed of tack-fused strips of sheet glass.
