Lillian will be doing a short presentation on the art of color in quilting, with a brief history of hand marbling, and a description of the dyeing process. This will be fol-lowed by a trunk show of her fabrics. Her workshop will be held the following day. It will demonstrate how color can be used to transform simple quilt patterns into exceptional projects. Please join her for a day of fun! Lillian is a New York City ―transplant‖, relocating from White Plains to San Jose in 1989 to continue her work as a technical marketing executive for IBM. She is a mathematician and computer science ―geek‖ by profession and a watercolor artist through her lifelong love of color, actually selling a few of her pieces. She has never lost her New York ―accent‖, and has family there whom she visits regularly. She has been hand-marbling and hand-dyeing fabrics for almost 10 years, originally for her daughter and friends. When the de-mand outstripped her small output, she de-cided to turn this into a retirement activity and now has many local and Internet customers for her fabrics. Piecing, appliqué and embroi-dery are fairly recent ventures. She is an ad-venturous quilter, trying new techniques (not necessarily those which are taught) with some very good and some very disastrous results. However, she says that it‘s the fun getting to a result that counts! Lillian lives in Laguna Niguel, in a house on top of a hill where she can look out at the mountains and evening lights. She has the company of two wonderful dogs – Daisy, a plott hound, and Scamp, a border collie. (You can see their pictures on the first page of her website www.elegantexpressions-

DECEMBER FEST December 8, 2009
On December 8, 2009, the Surfside Quilters Guild will be hosting December Fest! This is an exciting op-portunity to show appreciation to all members for their contributions to the successful start of the Guild. After a shortened regular meeting, members and guests will be able to enjoy festive food while having the oppor-
tunity to participate in several fundraising activities. The organizing committee has started their work and will be asking for members to join them in preparing this festive event - our major fundraiser for the year
ahead. The committee is being led by Barbara Seidel, Event Coordinator. Helped by Bev Weibel ~ Hospi-
tality, Joann Bishop ~ Publicity, Marge Johnson ~ Fundraising, Kathy Bellamy ~ Facility.
Look for more information in future newsletters.
By the time this newsletter is circulated I will have been inspired and refreshed from my first Empty Spools/Asilomar experience in Pacific Grove, CA. After years of hearing raves and seeing results from this quilting retreat, I took the plunge with Jan Hirth. Workshops are such a treat in many ways. We learn from the instructor, but so much can be gleaned from our fellow students. The fun and new
friends are such a bonus.
Our guild workshops are a real bargain. I take advantage of as many as possible. You meet your fellow members as well as learn
new techniques and tips.
The Suzanne Stanton reunion was sew fun. It was nostalgic to listen to her lecture and then to see so many examples from her classes at Show & Tell. This month we are treated to Lillian Gordon and her exciting use of color and expert long arm quilting. Lillian uses fun colors in her thread work and quilt tops. She is sew generous with
her talents and time.
The general meetings seem to run so smoothly, largely due to all the wonderful volunteers. Please consider adding your name to the list. Serving on committees enables us to make new friendships and
strengthen old ones. Let me know your special interests and skills.

STASHBUSTERS FOR PHILANTHROPY
Meeting on Monday, Sep. 28, from 10 am to 4 pm at A Time To Sew. You are welcome to join in this fun friendship group. This month we will learn how to do the ultimate ―scrappy‖ quilt - entitled ―It Just Doesn‘t Matter‖. Bring strips of all sorts of fabric and any left-over blocks from other quilt projects. We will show you how to make interesting blocks – sew-and-cut method, which will go into quilts for philanthropy. We can also continue on current projects. Bring sewing machine and supplies, an item to put into the friend-
ship salad, and any show-and-tell projects.
In August, we donated 20 items toward San Clemente Presbyterian Church‘s mission to Mexico. They promised to send us pictures of their trip and to show us the people whose lives we impacted. Thank you
to all who contributed.
We meet the fourth Monday of the month, from 10 am to 4 pm at A Time To Sew. If you‘d like to be put
on the E-vite list, contact Monica Shafer or Julie Vlahos.

OCTOBER WORKSHOP with Odette Osantowski - ―Let’s Go Sailing‖
With Odette‘s expert tips these paper pieced blocks are a great
learning project for beginners and a chance to fine tune the tech-
niques of more advanced piecers.
Odette has been quilting since 2002, joined BCQG in 2004 and is a charter member of Surfside Quilters Guild. She especially en-joys designing original blocks—her favorite part of quilt making is
the freedom to be creative.
See Carol Mayer at the Workshop table to sign up for the class to
make this summertime quilt.

The thanks we offer you, Nancy, are most sincere. [I still don‘t believe you ever actually sleep! Del]

MONTHLY MINI
―Pumpkin Pillow‖ Nancy Bloyer, your SQG Secre-tary, made the September mini from a pattern called ―Thoughtful Pillow‖ by Deborah Busby in Holi-day Crafts magazine 2008. This felted-wool pillow is pumpkin sized, it‘s hand appliquéd mes-sage is a warm seasonal accent as Thanksgiving approaches.
Nancy tells us, ―I began quilting some 20+ years ago when a friend asked me to go to a quilt-ing class at a quaint quilt shop in Orchards, Washington. Within a few years I was invited to meet with a small group of women who
hand quilted on a traditional frame. I finished my first machine-pieced quilt (hand quilted by the group) in
1993 and I have been trying different quilting techniques ever since. After learning to hand appliqué I found
my joy in the handwork of Hawaiian quilts, heirloom baby quilts, doll bed quilts and mini quilts for fund raisers.
Felted wool has been one of my newest explorations (once again fueled by a friend‘s invitation). The texture
and detail of handwork seem to be a natural for me… which is fine… and I am proud to say I have not ma-
chine appliquéd or quilted any one of my quilts!!‖
Margo Hertel was the winner of the Au-gust Monthly Mini, made
and donated by Mary Freedman and presented
by Sharon Milledge.
Every Monthly Mini adds money to our Treasury to help pay for speakers and
workshops.

Judy Dunlap is a newcomer to both California and Surfside Quilters Guild. Her husband of 30 years accepted a new job in Aliso Viejo, so they recently moved here from Baltimore and are now in the process of remodeling their new condo in Dana Point. .
Judy started quilting four years ago after a neighbor in Baltimore offered to help Judy make her first quilt - for her soon-to-be-married daughter. Since then, quilting has become a real passion for her. She especially loves to make baby quilts and appliqué baby clothes for the offspring of family and friends.
The way Judy found out about Surfside Quilters Guild is a poignant story. Shortly after her arrival in Southern California, she was on her way to ―A Time to Sew‖ for the Block of the Month group meet-ing, when she received a call from her son in Cincinnati. Her daughter-in-law had just given birth the week before to a baby boy. Little Landen was born at 26 weeks, so he only weighed 2 lb. 4 oz. Her son said that things were not looking good for Landen at that point. Judy knew she couldn‘t get back home to support the family, but her son reassured her they would let her know any news. She continued on to the store, where she was holding it together until a fellow quilter guessed something was very wrong and asked Judy if
INTRODUCING A MEMBER OF THE GUILD:
she was okay. When Judy started to share her bad news, she began to cry. This angel friend listened and com-forted her, as Judy relayed that she was new in the area and didn‘t know anyone, and how hard it was being so very far away from family at this time. The ―angel‖ told Judy about Surfside and suggested that she join the guild, where she could make instant friends with the common interest of quilting. Happy endings are always best, whether in quilts or in life, Judy‘s grandbaby pulled through the danger he was in and is now thriving.
If you see Judy, you‘ll recognize her by her great big smile. Say HELLO! Reported by Marcia Faulter-sack

A regular and very special guest at our meetings is ―Flair‖ a Guide Dog
in training who is accompanied by his ‗mommy‘ Nancy Bloyer.
It is hard not to reach out and give Flair a rub around the ears, but he
must not be spoiled, so we should just say hello. We hope she will be
a success in her Guide Dog career.
QUILTING ONLINE The Internet has become so much a part of the quilting com-munity that it is hard to resist so much information at our fin-gertips. Please let me know what sites or blogs you find in-formative or helpful or just plain fun and I will list them in this
column. Del [email protected]
Moda has an original idea on presenting their fabric lines. Look for jelly rolls, dessert rolls, honey buns, etc., all precut fabrics: http://
www.modabakeshop.com/
I think all of Moda‘s designers have blogs with tips and patterns and tutorials. I like that of Vanessa Christenson who also talks about
her busy life, family and quilt making experiences:
http://www.vanessachristenson.com/ The Quilter‘s Hall of Fame has a website and a blog with informa-tion about the organization and its home at the Marion Webster house in Marion, Indiana. http://www.quiltershalloffame.net/ http://thequiltershalloffame.blogspot.com/ Here is a site that has interviews with quilters, discussions about products, different blogs and sites to visit and is just an all around window into art quilting around the world: www.subversivestitch.blogspot.com And I have to mention again the Studio Art Quilt Associates site: www.SAQA.com which offers a continuous slide program of quilts made by the professional members and much more. This year is their twentieth anniversary so there are many spe-cial exhibits. See the info in ―Places to Go...‖ on Page 10 for info about their online auction coming up on Sep. 10th.
