  • EXALTED RULER MESSAGE

    Happy New Year everyone!

This last year was certainly not a normal year. There were trying times for everyone. I am hopeful that this next year will be a better one.

It is hard to believe that with the arrival of January, there are only three more months left as a term of office for many of our officers. In February we will be electing officers for the 2021/2022 year. The elected officers will take office on April 1, 2021. Watch for more information on this process in the February Newsletter.

December was a busy month for our charities. In December, our Veteran’s Committee, chaired by Dick Wilson, coordinated the distribution of gifts to our veterans in the various Assisted Living Homes. The committee members were invited to join DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) in the “Wreaths Across America” program. Members spent time on Saturday, December 19, placing 2,010 wreaths on veteran’s graves at Tonaquint and the St. George cemeteries.

The Community Activities Committee, chaired by Lynn Murray, provided Christmas Food Baskets for families in need. They collected can goods and purchased hams and bag of potatoes to be delivered to these families. In addition, she set up an Angel tree and distributed Christmas gifts for children of families in need. I want extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed their time or donations to the Angel Tree and Veterans Tree.

Let’s not forget our Boy Scout Troop #0509. I want to thank them for the festive decoration at the front of the lodge. The decorations were beautiful and brightened our spirits as we entered the lodge.

  • Boy Scout Troop 0509 Announcements

Troop 0509 will be holding a fundraiser at Cafe Zupas on January 12. Our fundraising efforts have been largely curtailed this year due to Covid concerns, so we are asking for your help. In order to participate in the fundraiser, eat at Cafe Zupas on January 12 between 5-9 p.m. and tell them you are there to support our troop. You can dine in or pick up. If you order online please enter the code FUNDRAISER25 at checkout to ensure we are credited with your order. Thank you in advance for your support.

The Boy Scout slogan, do a good turn daily, has been tough for our boys to adhere to in these days of covid and social distancing. That being the case, we are looking for Elks members that could use a little help. Our Scouts love to serve others and are looking for opportunities to do just that. If you need assistance with yard work such as leaf removal or wood stacking please call Jennifer Harris at 435-319-5166 to set up an appointment for our Scouts to come out. Many hands make light work!

Finally, we would like to thank the Elks for their continued support. Despite the struggles of the last year our Troop is strong and active and our Scouts are excited about the future and what it will bring.

    Sponsor a Clubroom Chair

Your Board of Directors has been planning to replace the Clubroom chairs for some time. The problem is finding quality chairs that won’t have to be replaced again in a year or two. We finally found them; These chairs have lasted for 10 years at the 1880 Grille in Mesquite Nevada, however, the dilemma is the price. they cost $500 each.

This is where you come in…would you be willing to sponsor a Clubroom Chair? For your $500 donation your name will be on a plaque in the Clubroom to acknowledge your generous gift.

If you are willing to sponsor a chair, please write a check to St. George Elks Lodge and in the memo line write “Clubroom Chair.”

  • I would like to thank all of our members for making our Angel Tree a GREAT SUCCESS again this year. Your support, the

wonderful gifts, money, and food donations made it evident that Dixie Elks Lodge members really do care and share with those less fortunate. Without your generosity, many children in our Community would not have had any presents or food for Christmas.

Your hard work and dedication made us honored and proud to be associated with Dixie Elks Lodge # 1743. A big thanks to PER Tim Murray, Leading Knight Bob Matteson, and Elaine Heger Gubler for all their help and to Santa Clara Elementary and Crimson View Elementary schools for all the food and canned goods donated for the food boxes.

Lyn Murray PER, Community Activities and Angel Tree Coordinator

    Veteran’s corner

To start 2021, we want to thank our members for your time and donations. During 2020, we reached out to eight retirement and care homes. We supplied them with candy bars

(several times), coloring and word search books, CD and DVD Players, socks, and more. December was busy. The Veterans Christmas Tree had 185 stars from seven homes. Gift requests

included Diet Coke, world peace, and bananas. Thank you, for taking stars and/or donating generously to cover additional stars we shopped for ‘til we dropped. That shopping experience will last until next Christmas. Thanks to Evelyn who helped shop and wrapped everything, and thanks to the committee members who helped deliver gifts.

The Veterans Committee donated to Wreathes Across America and were invited to lay wreaths on December 19, a very moving experience. Thank you to the members who participated.

We sent six more packages to Utah National Guard members in Afghanistan. We sent books, puzzle books, games and the always-popular foot powder. We will mail a final six cartons in January.

A special thanks to the LOE who gave us so much support in 2020. They gave generously to the Afghanistan project, and in lieu of exchanging gifts at their Christmas dinner donated 254 pairs of socks for our local veterans. The LOE doesn’t do things in a small way. We look forward to working with them in 2021, thank you for your loyalty

In 2021 we hope to have some fun fundraisers and a bar-b-que for our veteran members and visitors from the local homes. Stay healthy, and remember to reach out to our veterans with care and respect.

Dick Wilson, Chairperson Veterans Committee 435-773-6974

  • Happy New Year Everyone! Let’s all hope this new year grants us good health and a way to return to life as we once

knew it (or some semblance thereof). I know that I won’t be taking little freedoms and choices for granted, as we work our way toward a virus inclusive normal. I believe we have all learned from this experience and we can continue in the charitable spirit that Elkdom instills in us.

Speaking of charitable spirit, at our holiday get-together our Ladies of Elks donated over 250 pairs of socks for our veterans. We chose to donate socks in lieu of a gift exchange and it was a huge success. Kudos to our Ladies! Dick and Evelyn Wilson will see that the socks are distributed along with the gifts from the Veterans Angel Tree.

Thanks to everyone who stopped to shop at our Christmas Boutique, and a HUGE thank you to those that just gave a donation to help us out. Since our fundraising has been curtailed, your support is very much appreciated. Also, we still have a few cookbooks for sale. If you missed out and would like to purchase one, please contact Kaye Petersen or one of your LOE officers.

Best wishes for a happy and safe New Year!

    Lynne Pappas, LOE President ———————————————————————————————————

The Ladies of Elks would like to thank all who donated items, worked our event, purchased items, or donated money.

In spite of all the obstacles we have had this past 10 months, our Christmas Boutique raised over $1100.00 for our LOE local charities. We could not have done it without you. You are all the best! Thank you again for your support.

DeDe Sittre, Committee Chairman Perk Matteson, Committee Co-Chairman —————————————————————————————————————————

The Ladies of Elks have been busy fulfilling Christmas orders for our military veterans and others. One hundred eighty-one veterans were visited and each received a gift to show our appreciation.

A lovely Christmas dinner was served on December 8. Creative and fun games were played after the Ham dinner. Overall, A fun night for all who attended.

The Winter Luncheon will be served on January 16. Watch the newsletter for updates.

The LOE wishes members and their families a happy holiday season. Merry Christmas to all.

A few less than our normal number of bowlers, but I think the 53 who did show up to bowl had a really fun time. I know a few who did for sure. Dalton Smith and Lisa Jones were our high-money winners for the bowling part of the day. Will Hutchinson and Bill Echternkamp each did a fine job of rolling strikes to win a strike pot and I guess that wasn’t quite enough for Bill as he was also called for the Lucky 13 and won that pot also. Good day for those folks!

Some really good bowling went on also, and although it is no-tap, nine down can be a bit tricky at any time but not for these folks who each rolled a 300 game, Bob Dixon, Dalton Smith, Rod Engle, Matt Polatis, and Will Hutchinson who actually rolled two 300 games.

We have every variety of bowlers, not just those who roll the 300’s so come out and join us, pretty sure you’ll enjoy yourselves, as our new bowlers tend to become our regular bowlers and show up month after month once they start. As well as having a good time, you are supporting a scholarship fund by participating.

Our next Color Pin No-Tap tournament will be January 10. Remember to check in by 1:15 to give us time to get you on your lanes and everything ready to bowl at 2:00.
