Class Activity & Group Work Go over homework questions/answers Group work: Ernest Hemingway uses many literary devices in his short stories. Some of these are

subtle and some are more obvious. In your groups, you will be assigned a literary device and it will be your job to explain how this device is used in the story. You will have the entire period today to prepare and next class, you will present this to the class. Remember, you are teaching the class about your device. You must use evidence from the story and your learning to explain. You may also want to do some outside research to support your thoughts as well.

Group 1: Theme-Communication: How is communication a major theme of the story? How do the characters the characters communicate or NOT communicate? Give specific evidence. Group 2: Theme- Selfishness and Manipulation: How are each of the characters selfish? How do they try to manipulate each other? Give specific evidence.Group 3: Theme- Choices: What choices do the characters have to make? How do they feel about these choices? Give specific evidence. Group 4: Motif- Alcohol: How is alcohol and drinking brought up in the story? What purpose does the alcohol and drinking serve in the novel? Give specific evidence.Group 5: Motif- The Word “operation”. Why does the man use the word operation, instead of saying what it really is? What do the characters say about the “operation”?Group 6: Symbolism: Hills and the color White- What do these symbolize in the story?
