other races in both cities along with the upcoming Run for the Son 5K run in Port Lavaca.

“I run on my own, and

I enter different races to see where I’m at as far as racing goes,” Cardona said.

Preparing and competing in the various runs is a way for Cardona to stay fit and healthy. He appreciates the adrenaline rush during a race, he said, but the act of running is one of love and hate.

“It’s hard to explain. It’s a stress reliever, and it helps me be in shape, but when you get into the higher miles, it’s not really enjoyable,” Cardona said with a laugh.

Cardona has kept up his motivation to run and compete with the support from his girlfriend and parents. His mother, Sara, is also a committed runner, he said. Cardona expressed his appreciation for them being by his side, cheering him on during races and pushing to his fullest potential.

For the New York City marathon, Cardona hopes to finish in 3 hours and 30 minutes and has his sights set on Houston and Boston.

“But, I need to see how this first one goes,” Cardona said. “Desiree (Garza) said do this first one and see how you feel. I want to do the marathon in Houston, and I would love to qualify for the Boston marathon, but it would be difficult and would have to run a 3 hour 5 minute marathon to qualify.”

For now, preparing for New York City is his priority, and

he appreciates all the support he can get. He also thanked his employer in Corpus Christi who paid his entry fee of around $250.

“Any kind of support is greatly appreciated—and not just for the charity either,” Cardona said. “Just people saying good luck or that they’re praying for me in my training and for the race is greatly appreciated.”

Karl said of the jalapeno-eating contest. “No ghost chilies, just jalapenos. It was a big hit, and everybody liked it.”

“We put so many in a cup and see how many they can eat at a time,” he said. “It is funny. I feel sorry for them. They have plenty of water to chase them down.”

The festival also includes a hot dog-eating contest.

“They’re given 10 hot dogs with a bun, and they have so many minutes to see how many they can eat. The kids like to do it as well. It’s just a lot of fun, and it brings their families out to watch them.”

About 300 people have said they will attend, Karl said.

“Since it’s been close to 10 years since the last festival, it’s really hard to say, but we hope

for 500 to 600 the first year,” said Scotty Jones, financial director for the City.

The City brought back Iguana Fest in an effort to add more events to the local calendar, Jones said.

“The City has been working to add other fun events for the community and tourists alike. I heard about the Iguana Fest, and knew a lot of people remembered it and wanted it back,” Jones said.

Jones, who is a regular at the restaurant, thought there is no better time than the present to put new life into the festival.

“I would look at the walls of The Iguana Grill and marvel at the old signs of the Iguana Fest. After working the Flip Flop Festival for a few years, I was ready for a new adventure and wanted to bring a great

memory and a dream of Justin Karl’s back to life. This event already has a great following in the community so why not?,” she said.

Jones wanted to keep Iguana Fest in its original location.

“The location of downtown is where all the original Iguana Fests were, also referred to as ‘Iguana Park,’ which is located

behind The Green Iguana Grill. I wanted Justin (Karl) to be closely connected to the vision of Iguana Fest as he in fact was the founder. I told him to send me as many pictures as he could. This festival is a group effort of City and (Port Lavaca) Chamber (of Commerce) and the gracious businesses that have helped support it,” Jones said.

“I wanted to see it resurrected because it’s a lot of fun,” Karl said.

Both Karl and Jones agree that fun is what is on the menu at Iguana Fest.

“We hope everyone has enough fun that they will want, beg for it each year to come back,” Jones said.
