A cocoa farming project is underway in Lihir with

partnership between the:

• Division of Primary Industry-Lihir, • Newcrest- Lihir Gold Operation, • Nimarmar LLG, • Lihir Sustainable Development Plan and• Cocoa Coconut Industry in NIP.• PNG Cocoa Board

Aim: To revive agriculture and promote economic growth

in the local communities of Lihir Island by providing an alternative and sustainable source of income for each household.

To establish relationship with:• CCI,• PNGCB and• NIPG,

And to promote Cocoa Farming on Lihir Island and NIP to supply Mondelez International-Asia Pacific.

It is important that growers get recognition for the sweat equity they put in but equally important is the fact that they are the primary producers and owners of the product. To maintain interest we all need to ensure that we maintain service support to them, open up markets technical services to improve and maintain quality in the field in processing cocoa.

Network between the NIP Team and the Lihir Team has been successful and a way forward has been drafted by the Team.

To meet the demand of Mondelez International, Lihir has to connect with the Whole of New Ireland to have the quantity required and needed resources to have the quality cocoa produce.
