I 'm the shortest one in nearly every picture in which I appear. It's not that I'm that short (about three inches below average), but I am surrounded by taller people. Consequently, Zacchaeus has always been a particular favorite of mine. I certainly would have tried to get higher to see Jesus, too. Maybe Zacchaeus and I would have shared a branch. But Zacchaeus inspires me for another reason. When Jesus, whom Zacchaeus knew only by reputation, called to him, his response was immediate. He came down to stand in front of Jesus. In their society, tax collectors were considered traitors and ostracized by all. In the process of working for the Romans, Zacchaeus strengthened Caesar's influence and likely charged more than he should have to support a wealthy lifestyle when most Jews lived in poverty. Seeing Zacchaeus in the tree, Jesus seized the opportunity to bring conversion to a sinner. Instead of judgment or bitterness from a stranger, Jesus offered him words of welcome. Zacchaeus heard the invitation (literal and spiritual) in Jesus' statement-"I must stay at your house"-and "received him with joy." When Jesus enters our house, we find the strength to turn from sin. The effect of Jesus' presence on Zacchaeus was immediate. As they stood together, he turned from his sin and promised to care for the poor and make restitution for anything he stole. Let us hurry to receive Jesus into our hearts and turn away from our sin as well. Staying untilMass is overDo I need to stay until the very end of Mass? The shortconcluding rites feel anticlimactic after Communion.

The Mass is intended to contain "aconscious, active, and full participationof the faithful, ...fervent with faith, hope and charity" (General Instructionof the Roman Missal, 18). At Mass, thefaithful form one body, a holy people,to "give thanks to God and offer theunblemished sacrificial Victim not onlyby means of the hands of the Priestbut also together" (GIRM 95). This isachieved through "their deep religioussense and their charity toward brothersand sisters who participate with them"(GIRM 95). Thus, reverence for God atMass includes a proper respect for thepeople worshipping with you. Remaininguntil the recessional concludes-as wellas arriving on time-is a sign of thisreverence. It respects not only God and

Dear Jesus, even the times we have sinned can be offered toyou, as soon as we are sorry. It makes you very happy when werepent, and it brings us joy when we run to you for forgiveness.Thank you for your mercy, 0 Lord! Amen.

your neighbors in the pew but also theministers (ordained or lay), ushers, andeveryone present.

After the faithful partake in theEucharist, there isa communal period ofsilenceto allow for personal prayer. Also, apsalm, canticle of praise,or hymn may beoffered and sung (GIRM 88, 164). "There isno prayer more agreeable to God, or moreprofitable to the soul, than that whichis made during the thanksgiving afterCommunion," wrote St.Alphonsus in TheHoly Eucharist. While an early departureor late arrival at Massmay be, at times, unavoidable, it is preferable to celebrateMassin its entirety, in heart, mind, soul...and body!

NO PROP 106A FATALLY FLAWED MEASURE

Prop 106 would allow Colorado doctors to write a suicide prescription for a consenting person who has been diagnosed with aterminal illness who the doctor believes has six months or less to live. But as 9 NEWS in Denver points out, the measure "requiresthe patient to self-administer the drug to end their own life." That's why it's called Assisted Suicide. A doctor is required to writethe prescription, but then patients are on their own. No doctor or trained professional will prepare or administer the deadlymedicine. And no professional is required to be there when the patient dies. That's just one major flaw •••

REFLECTING ON OUR FAITH

Toward the end of his own life Saint John Paul II was a livingwitness to the meaning of suffering. Here is one of the manybeautiful reflections he offered:

"But in general it can be said that almost always the individual enterssuffering with a typically human protest and with the question 'why'.He asks the meaning of his suffering and seeks an answer to thisquestion on the human level. Certainly he often puts this questionto God, and to Christ. Furthermore, he cannot help noticing that theone to whom he puts the question is himself suffering and wishesto answer him from the Cross, from the heart of his own suffering.Nevertheless, it often takes time, even a long time, for this answer tobegin to be interiorly perceived. For Christ does not answer directlyand he does not answer in the abstract this human questioning aboutthe meaning of suffering. Man hears Christ's saving answer as hehimself gradually becomes a sharer in the sufferings of Christ."

On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, SI. John Paul II

DISCUSSING WITH REASON

Your friends and family will likely be unaware of the specifics andramifications of this bill. Please think about and discuss the following points:

The American Medical Association holds that "physician-assisted suicide isfundamentally incompatible with the physician's role as healer."

We all know that doctors can make mistakes. The fact is that patients can

outlive their prognosis by months or even decades. The opinion of a licensed mental health professional is not required for

those pursuing physician-assisted suicide

Long-term treatments for those with chronic illnesses, the elderly, disabled

and the poor will be branded as unnecessary economic burdens. This

could lead to coercion to commit suicide because of cost.

The long term implications for insurance are unknown. Cases are

documented where insurance has covered assisted-suicide but not other

life-prolonging treatments prescribed by doctors. The prescription typically requires a person to swallow 100 lethal pills that

can be picked up at a pharmacy or mailed to private homes.
