2. Introduction: Combi Cut Out

The Combi Cut Out is a transformer protection isolator that combines both a drop out surge arrester and fuse carrier expulsion link into one.

SURGE ARRESTER

The Surge Arrester is housed in the Combi Unit. It protects both the fuse and transformer from over voltages. In the event of surge arrester failure, the Combi Unit isolates that particular phase of the transformer, thereby eliminating further over voltage to that phase transformer. This provides a fail safe system to protect the transformer

FUSE CARRIER

The Fuse Carrier operates to isolate the overloaded or faulty transformer. The subsequent phase is isolated when the current drawn through the fuse element exceeds the rating thereof.

FUNCTION

The Combi Unit is designed to protect distribution transformers from lightning and over voltage, and to isolate faulty transformers. The Combi Unit offers effective protection to transformers ranging in size from 16kva to 1mva. On medium voltage networks ranging from: 3.3kv, 6.6kv, 12kv, 24kv up to 36kv.

RATINGS

Ÿ Operating voltages - 12kv, 24kv and 36kvŸ Continuous current ratings 100AŸ Load break current on base 7AŸ 4ka breaking capacity for 12kv, 24kv and 36kv

(greater fault levels available on request)Ÿ Creeping (coastal applications)

4. Combi Unit Advantages

Convenient to maintainŸ Replace a surge arrester in 3 minutes Ÿ The Combi Unit provides enhanced safety during surge arrester maintenance

No customer outage during maintenanceŸ Traditionally, surge arrester maintenance required scheduled outage, and may have taken weeks to arrangeŸ The Combi Unit allows immediate on-the-spot surge arrester replacement

100% ensured transformer surge protectionWhen the surge arrester blows, it isolates the phase and ensures that no further surges damage the transformer until a replacement is installed. The user cannot turn the power on until a new surge arrester is installed. This is known as Unique Surge Arrester Alert.

The conventional surge arrester replacement can take an electrical utility between 1 - 4 hours.Recover time lost during the standard surge arrester replacement procedure:Ÿ Phone customer to arrange a planned outage (24 - 48 hours before maintenance)Ÿ Drive to site (5 - 30 minutes)Ÿ Install portable earth kits (5 minutes)Ÿ Get ladder and unload vehicle (5 - 10 minutes)Ÿ Put on FAS kit (5 - 10 minutes)Ÿ Get toolbox and put on gloves (5 - 10 minutes)Ÿ Remove old surge arrester (20 - 30 minutes)Ÿ Remove portable earth kits (5 minutes)Ÿ Remove FAS kit (5 minutes)Ÿ Finalise safety checks, and drive back to substation (20 minutes)Ÿ Phone control and inform them that power is to be switched on (5 minutes)Ÿ Close the links and restore power

Replace surge arresters with a hot stickIt is much safer and more cost effective to replace a surge arrester from the ground level.

Nuisance fusing eliminatedThe Combi Unit must be installed within 1m of the transformer and ensures that the fuse and surge arrester are connected in parallel. The fuse must not be placed into the surge arrester holder or vice versa, as they vary in length.

Firewall Bracket (universal)The Firewall is used for line surge protection and is available in voltages up to 36kv. The Firewall bracket is universal and can house various brands of surge arrest manufacturers (Maclean, Cooper, ABB, Siemens, and Areva / Tridelta).

Surge ArresterThe surge arrester housed in the Firewall unit protects the overhead line from over voltages. In the event of a surge arrester failure, the surge arrester drops out, signalling replacement.

The Firewall Bracket unit becomes part of that line infrastructure for a 20 - 30 year period. During its lifespan it will house many surge arresters, thereby eliminating further outages and facilitate surge arrester maintenance.

It is advisable to install Firewall Brackets in areas with higher lightning activity, where surge arrester replacement is more frequent, and in industries where shutdown is an issue, as well as in cities and high customer density.

FunctionThe Firewall is designed to protect overhead lines from voltage and enables the utility to populate the line without concern for outages (maintenance) at a later stage for replacement. Firewalls have also been used at the transformer for easier surge arrester replacement, instead of conventional surge arrester systems.

RatingsŸ Operating voltages range from 12kv, 24kv, and 36kvŸ Universal bracket housing various brands of surge arresters

The most common voltages are from 3.3kv, 6.6kv, 12kv and 24kv which fit into the drop out surge arrester Firewall bracket.

The drop out surge arrester is the safest surge arrester system, with a no recorded injuries to replace the surge arrester with a telescopic link stick.

1) Safest surge arrester in the worldTechnician cannot get injured by replacing the surge arrester from the ground.

2) Visual indicationThe drop out surge arrester will drop out only when the surge arrester expires. Not every time there is a lightning storm.

3) Reduce fault findingShould a surge arrester malfunction and SEF (Sensitive Earth Fault), the surge arrester can easily be pulled out via a hot stick or telescopic link.

4) Improve customer serviceReduce surge arrester replacement time from minutes and hours to seconds.

5) Improve probability of replacementEskom studies indicate that drop out surge arresters are 4 times more likely to be replaced than fixed types.

1) Install Arresters at strategic poles on poorly insulated lines

2) Install Arresters as Firewalls to assist Surge Arresters placed at the transformer. Commonly placed one pole away from a critical transformer placement in order to assist surge arresters at the transformer Combi Unit.

3) Install Arresters at poles that are consistently struck by lightning causing split poles and line damage.

4) Install Arresters at the end of the overhead line, where voltage doubling occurs and where underground cable must be protected against voltage refraction and damage.

5) Install Arresters at points on overhead lines that are supposedly protected by high masts but where equipment loss remains high. 6) Install Arresters to prevent poor performing lines from causing ARCs and “tripping” on the overhead lines.

7) Install Arresters rather than conventional arresters to avoid outages and to improve customer service.
