Lightning and voltage surges endangerpeople and assets.

Lightning and voltage surges en-danger people and assets.Lightning strikes Germany aroundtwo million times a year, and thatfigure is rising. Discharges occurin both rural and densely popu-lated areas, endangering people, buildings and technical equipment.Hundreds of millions of euros of

damage is done each year, espe-cially as a result of electricalsurges. That is because electricaldevices – some of which are ex-tremely sensitive – are nowadayspart of everyday life. Such equip-ment is especially vulnerable tovoltage surges and needs protect-ing just as much as buildings do.

1,500,000,000More than 1.5 billion lightningevents each year worldwide.

100More than 100 lightning strikes oc-cur every second worldwide.

30,000° C300 km/s30,000 degrees Celsius is thetemperature of the air in the pathof the lightning, which dischargesat a speed of 300 kilometres persecond.

Our everyday lives are shaped by the availability of modern controlequipment, yet it is constantly at risk.

Intelligent controllers, high-powercomputers, data centres – com-puters, automation and telecom-munications systems performmany important jobs in both theprivate and the professional world. Our lives are totally reliant on tech-nological support, and hundreds ofbillions of euros is spent each yearbuilding up that support.Vital computer-assisted systemssuch as fire alarms, as well as in-dustrial plants fitted with modern

automation equipment, are highlysensitive and extremely vulnerableto electrical surges.Just one lightning strike nearby, oran electrical failure in the powersupply, and modern control equip-ment is destroyed. The economicconsequences can be devastating:plant standstill, heavy losses onaccount of production downtime, data loss, repairs and systemfaults can potentially drive a com-pany to bankruptcy.

230 V 24 V 5 V 2.5 V

Greater performance, greater susceptibility to interferenceHighly developed modern electric-al equipment is becoming evermore sensitive. Or to put it anotherway, as voltage ratings drop, sotoo does electrical stability. Elec-tronic valves in the 1950s oper-ated at a remarkably high ratedvoltage of 230 V, but as transist-ors arrived in the 1960s thisdropped to 24 V. Integrated cir-cuits came in around 1980, andthey worked at just 5 V. Moderncomputers use 2.5 V – in otherwords, just one per cent of the ori-ginal voltage, which makes themmany times more susceptible toelectrical interference. Coupledwith all this, the number of deviceshas grown hugely. So effectiveprotection against surges has be-come much more important than itused to be.

Direct lightning strikes, nearby lightning and switching operations.Three causes of damage.

Three causes of damageTransient surges can be causedby three things:•Direct lightning strikes•Lightning striking nearby•Switching operationsEquipment and systems can beprotected against all three.

What are transient high-energysurges?Transient voltage surges are short-term peaks in voltage lasting forjust a few millionths of a second. They can be many times higherthan the mains voltage, and are

caused by switching operationsand by lightning. It is not just directstrikes that are dangerous, butalso the much more frequent hitsthat occur in the vicinity of build-ings.

1 Air termination and down conductor systems

Direct lightning strikes with energy of up to 200,000 A are reliably re-ceived by air termination devices and conducted into an earthing systemthrough the arrester system.

3 Equipotential bonding systems

These form the interface between external and internal lightning protec-tion. They ensure that dangerous potential differences do not comeabout in the building.

2 Earthing systems

If the conducted lightning current reaches the earthing system, then ap-proximately 50 per cent of the energy is passed into the ground, whilethe other half is distributed via the equipotential bonding system.

1 Tough stuff:Air termination and down conductor systems

OBO air termination and downconductor systems offer a widerange of solutions for almostevery scenario, whether in partsof biogas plants that are at risk ofexplosion, in highly sensitivephotovoltaic systems, or atpower plants.

With around 1,500 differentproducts in a range of different

materials, OBO always has a suit-able system on offer. OBO light-ning protection components offertested quality. They comply withIEC 62305 (VDE 0185-305) andhave been tested in accordancewith the IEC 62561 (VDE 0185-561) series of international andEuropean testing standards. Airtermination devices receive light-ning strikes on roofs. Chimneys,

antenna masts, ventilation pipes, domed skylights and similar at-tachments that protrude from theroof are protected using separatelypositioned and insulated intercept-or rods. These interceptor rods areconnected together by what isknown as interceptor cables, sothat the lightning current can throwaway down specific channels.

1. Lightning protection• Comprehensive: from roof cable holder to

cross clamp• Diverse materials: such as ten different types

of terminals• Intelligent installation features: pluggable in-

terceptor rod systems such as Fangfix

2. Insulated lightning protection (GRP)• Pre-assembled sets• Adjustable holders• Weatherproof

3. Insulated arresting with the isCon® system• Outstanding installation properties:

2 Conducting lightning current safely into the ground:Earthing systems

Earthing systems conduct light-ning current into the ground. They also act as links to protect-ive devices such as surge protec-tion equipment, whose protectiondevices do not trip until theearthing system signals them todo so.

A range of different earthing sys-

tems are available, depending onthe building. OBO has the rightsystems for lightning protectionearthing as described in IEC62305 (VDE 0185-305), and forfoundation earthing as laid downin DIN18014.

OBO has the right standard-com-pliant, long-lasting earthing system

for every application • Tested components compliant

3 Dependable protection against voltage differences:Equipotential bonding systems

Equipotential bonding systemsensure the safe distribution oflightning energy, but they alsoprotect people and electricalequipment against electric shockin a building in the event of othertypes of voltage overloads. In the event of a lightning strike, approximately 50 per cent of thelightning’s energy is carried intothe earthing system. The remain-ing 50 per cent is distributedaround the equipotential bondingsystem (internal lightning protec-tion). This can lead to dangerous

sparking. Electrical power and ITequipment requires particularlycareful protection.

An equipotential bonding systemmust be installed in every buildingaccording to IEC 60364 (VDE0100-534) / IEC 62305 (VDE0185-305), and it is also a require-ment in every new installation oralteration. Operators of commer-cial properties are obliged to in-stall one by the Ordinance on In-dustrial Safety and Health. OBOsupplies standard-compliant sys-

tems. Looped equipotential bond-ing and the inclusion of naturalmetal building parts such as rein-forcement steel and metal facadesprovide optimum protectionagainst potential differences andinductive coupling.

4 Effective protection:Surge protection systems for power equipment

Voltage surges are caused by dir-ect and indirect lightning strikes, and by switching operationswithin power networks. That iswhy surge protection guards notonly against lightning, but alsoagainst other power line interfer-ence.

Surge protection equipment en-sures that power lines undervoltage are properly equipotentiallybonded. It responds before the in-sulation in electrical and electronicappliances can be irreparablydamaged by surges.

Tested safetyAll of OBO’s surge protectionequipment is tested in compliancewith the standards in our own BETTest Centre, and comes with afive-year guarantee. A whole seriesof national and international testsymbols testify to the quality of ourproducts.

4 Protecting sensitive devices: Surge protection systems for telecommu-nications and data equipment

Similar to power equipment, tele-communications and data tech-nology is extremely sensitive tovoltage surges. Nowadays, busi-nesses and private householdsare dependent on fast, reliabledata transmission through net-works in order to communicate.

It is therefore important to protecttelecommunications systems anddata centres against surges.  OBO surge protection equipmentensures that telecommunicationsand data lines under voltage are

properly equipotentially bonded. Itresponds before the insulation inelectrical and electronic appli-ances is irreparably damaged bysurges.

1. Surge protection for data equipment• Transmission at up to 10 GBit• Pluggable protection devices for all common

interfaces• High-quality aluminium cases with adapters

2. Surge protection for ICA equipment• Protection devices for multi-core systems• Installed widths of 8 to 17.5 mm• Extremely large frequency bandwidths of up

to 100 MHz

3. Surge protection for telecommunicationsequipment• Easy installation• Low protection level, high conductivity• Broadband-compatible

Where we develop and test the products ofthe future

The BET Test CentreLightning is on the menu at OBOBettermann’s own test centre. Thelightning protection experts heretest lightning and surge protectioncomponents, lightning protectionstructures and surge protectionsystems. Scientific studies are alsoconducted to investigate the effectof lightning events.

High-end equipmentThe BET Test Centre has a test ge-nerator that can conduct lightningcurrent tests at up to 200 kA, anda hybrid generator for surgevoltage tests at up to 20 kV. Bothgenerators were developed in con-junction with Soest University ofApplied Sciences.

Standard-compliant testingTop of the agenda at the testcentre is the expert testing ofOBO’s transient and lightning pro-tection. This includes testing newlydeveloped products, modifying ex-isting products and comparinglightning protection components, surge protection equipment andlightning arresters. Surge arrestersand all of our protective equipmentfor data and telecommunicationslines are tested in accordance withIEC and national standards.
