Schools Receive STOP THE BLEED Training and Kits

Last February, the Georgia Trauma Committee, made up of trauma professionals from across the state, lobbied state lawmakers to get funding to administer the nationwide Stop the Bleed program in public school systems across Georgia. They received the $1 million funding in March 2017, which allowed them to buy 29,000 kits to be distributed to 2000 schools. The kits, which contain tourniquets and wound-packing materials, are meant to render immediate medical aid to bleeding victims at the scene of emergencies. The kits and training, which is provided free-of-charge by Memorial Health, are already in the hands of at least 22 SCCPSS school Emergency Response teams, Savannah police, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport police, Chatham Emergency Services, and Savannah Fire. And for good reason — a person can die of blood loss in as little as five minutes. Pooler was the 21st school Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to complete the training and receive their 12 free kits. Both the training and kits are provided for free, but schools cannot receive the kits without the training. During the recent 30-minute training session at Pooler Elementary, a small team from the Memorial Medical’s pediatric trauma program demonstrated the proper use of the tourniquet and gauze to the Emergency Response Team. The Pooler Elementary staffers practiced using the apparatuses on themselves and with foam pool noodles, meant to simulate injured limbs. The kits include gloves, shears to cut clothing, four yards of compressed gauze, wound dressing materials, a roll of tape and a tourniquet. At least 10-15, school staff members are trained to use the kits during the program — which is essentially identical to the training first responders received earlier this year. After the training, the school receives 12 free kits. Lisa Wilson, district lead nurse, encourages the remaining schools to sign up for this valuable service by having the school nurse contact her. A Show of Hands: Hand Casts by 4th Grade Students from the Savannah Chatham County Public

Schools on Exhibit

March 1-30, 2018

Morrison Community Gallery

By Harry DeLorme, Senior Curator of Education

Visitors to the Jepson Center have been amazed by an installation of 3,200 plaster hand casts by

each 4th-grade student in the Savannah Chatham Public Schools. March is Youth Art Month, and

Telfair Museums celebrates the work of these students who came to the Jepson Center this past

fall to see the exhibition Rodin: The Human Experience and make a copy of their hand. In addition

to discussing the work of Rodin and sculpture in the permanent collection, students learned about

the casting process used to create works in plaster and bronze. Each student made a cast with a

substance called Alginate, which was donated by Brasseler, USA.

Telfair Museums Studio Manager Kip Bradley created an ingenious shelving system to display the

3,200 plaster hands. All fourth grade students and their families will have an opportunity to visit

the Jepson Center free of charge to see their “hand” iwork on Saturday, March 25, 2018, from 1

p.m. – 4 p.m. The SCCPSS and Telfair Museums would like to thank all of the generous donors who

made this major education program possible!
