An Uphill Battle

Lighting is the single most difficult thing to do on a movie set. Every facet of production

revolves around lighting. Things like costumes, set design, camera movement, film stock, lens type, etc. are influenced by

how the scene is lit.

The Lighting Team

Director of Photography- In charge of the look and feel of the lighting scheme as well as acting boss for the electric crew, camera crew, and grip crew.

Gaffer- Chief lighting technician. The DP’s second hand man.

Best Boy- Gaffer’s second in command. Deals with a lot of management things.

Third Electric- Equipment prep., placement.

All members of the lighting team are going to be well versed in the following:

What angle is it coming from?

How bright is it?

It’s intensity

How bright is it compared to other lights?

Lighting contrast

What color is it?

Lighting/Film Style

Two types depending on indoor and outdoor use.

Each dictates a specific color temperature

Indoor we refer to as Tungsten

Outdoor we refer to as Daylight

Color Temperature

Named so because of the color a object turns when heat is increasingly added.

Tungsten - 3200 degrees Kelvin

Daylight - 5600 degrees Kelvin

Most BasicThree Point Lighting

Key- Brightest;casts primary shadows

Placed off camera axis; high enough to avoid nose shadow

Fill- Fills shadows made my key without creating new shadows

Backlight-Produce highlights on hair or shoulders.
