Lighting Europe
LightingEurope is an industry association representing 31 leading European lighting manufacturers and national lighting associations. The Lighting Industry Association is a founding member
LightingEurope members employ over 100,000 people in Europe and represent an annual turnover estimated to exceed 20 billion euros.

Standardised Quality Criteria
evaluate performance claims from different manufacturers it is important:
• to compare a standardised set of quality criteria;• that are measured in compliance with the appropriate standard.

IEC/PAS Performance Requirements
recently published• IEC/PAS 62717 – LED modules for general lighting;• IEC/PAS 62722 – LED luminaires for general lighting.
PAS stands for Public Available Specification

Quality Criteria Initial & Maintained
scope• initial & maintained claims of LED luminaires;• to establish confidence in the product data provided;• acceptance or rejection of quality over life is out of the scope!
Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours
technicaldefinitions
measurement methods

10.000 20.000 30.000 40.000 60.0000
Page 13
Quality Criteria Mentioned In The IEC/PAS
1) rated input power (in W);2) rated luminous flux (in lm);3) LED luminaire efficacy (in lm/W);
4) luminous intensity distribution;
5) Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT in K);6) rated Colour Rendering Index (CRI); 7) rated chromaticity co-ordinate values (initial and maintained);8) maintained luminous flux
Performance claims are always measured at a specific ambient temperature (tq).
Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours.

Photometric Code
six digit photometric code displays important ‘quality of light’ parameters
• initial CRI value of 84 – code 8;• initial CCT value of 3000K – code 30;• initial spread of chromaticity co-ordinates within a 3-step MacAdam
ellipse – code 3;• maintained spread of chromaticity co-ordinates within a 5-step
MacAdam ellipse – code 5;• maintained luminous flux of 91% – code 9.
Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours.

lumen maintenance (LxBy) • gradual light degradation of LED’s over time.
2 constraints• catastrophic failures of individual LED’s are not taken into account;• no validated way to translate lumen maintenance of LED’s into lumen
maintenance of LED luminaire.
lumen maintenance LED’s ≠ lumen maintenance LED luminaire; metric seems less appropriate to assess LED luminaires
performance!
Lumen Maintenance Claims

Luminaire Life Claims
Page 20
Luminaire Life Claims
Following IEC recommended lifetime metrics
lumen maintenance (LxFy) • gradual light degradation of all relevant components;• abrupt failures of individual LED’s & critical components.
abrupt failures (L0Cy) • of the complete luminaire.
Specified at: ambient temperature, # burning hours & # switches per day.

Example L70F50
life time (hrs) where light output≥70% for 50% of the population.
Example L0C10
life time (hrs) where light output is 0% for 10% of the population.

Remember not to mix up ‘Apples & Pears’
Fair comparison of initial performance of different LED luminaires:1. ask for product specifications measured against an appropriate
standard (e.g. IEC/PAS performance requirements).
When considering performance over time of a LED luminaire:2. forget about LM-80/TM-21 lumen maintenance data of LED’s used in
a luminaire;3. look for luminaire life based on ‘lumen maintenance’ & ‘abrupt
failures’ of the complete LED luminaire or system.
