This grandiose epic is one of Khachaturian’s most famous works, featuring the ever popular Adagio, and has been considered one of the greatest ballets in the Bolshoi repertoire since the 1960s. Yuri Grigorovich’s powerful and athletic production with spectacular choreography and scenery remains the most critically acclaimed version of all.

Marius Petipa’s version of the ballet was part of the Bolshoi’s repertoire until the beginning of the 20th century. In 2007 Alexei Ratmansky and Yuri Burlaka presented a new choreographic version, which stands out as the most sumptuous of all. Thrilling suspense is at the core of this lavish exotic fable, an amazing production complete with pirates, kidnapping, a shipwreck, and a record 120 dancers on stage.

The Bolshoi Ballet is the quintessential ballet company, presenting work of astounding skill, daring and bravura performed by the world’s greatest dancers.

Cursed at birth by the evil fairy Carabosse, Princess Aurora descends into a deep slumber on the day of her 16th birthday. Only the kiss of a prince will awaken her. With glorious music by Tchaikowsky based on Charles Perrault’s classic fairy tale, Marius Petipa’s masterpiece is one of the most popular and accomplished choreographic works in the classical repertoire. The new version by Yuri Grigorovich will captivate the whole family during the Christmas season.

Inspired by the famous jewellers of New York’s Fifth Avenue, this triptych is a tribute to women, and to the cities of Paris, New York and St Petersburg using music by three great composers for each act. Choreographed in 1967 in New York City, this ballet, with its jewel-like costumes, celebrates the elegance, aesthetic and style of choreographer George Balanchine. Emeralds was conceived as a poetic tribute to the French romantic school and Rubies to the American tradition of Broadway musicals, while Diamonds honours the virtuosity of classical Russian dancers.

In 1923, in a seaside town in the south of the Soviet Union, where trade and the mafia are flourishing, Boris falls in love with Rita – a cabaret dancer at The Golden Age, and the girlfriend of the local gangster. The Golden Age is a refreshing satire created for the Bolshoi by Yuri Grigorovich. Audiences will be fascinated by this original and delightful ballet with its jazz and cabaret musical parodies, frantic pace, passionate intrigue and variety of dance styles.

Lucien, a young provincial and budding composer, sets out to conquer the Parisian scene in search of glory. His success soon blinds him, and he betrays his friends and his love. Lost Illusions is a sumptuous new ballet, created in Moscow in 2011 by Alexei Ratmansky with dramaturgical advice by French actor, writer and director Guillaume Gallienne. This stylised adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s novel features thwarted love, ambition and disillusionment, with 19th century Paris as its backdrop.

Irish Actress and Director Fiona Shaw makes her Met directing debut as the great Anna Netrebko opens her third consecutive Met season in her company debut as Tatiana, the naive heroine from Pushkin’s classic novel. Deborah Warner’s new production of Tchaikovsky’s romantic tragedy Eugene Onegin is conducted by Valery Gergiev. Mariusz Kwiecien portrays the self-confident title character, in a much-admired interpretation he has sung in many of the world’s leading opera houses.

William Kentridge’s dazzlingly innovative production of Shostakovich’s shocking, unconventional surrealist opera about a beleaguered Russian official and his runaway nose returns to the Met for the first time since its sold-out 2010 premiere. Pavel Smelkov conducts a cast led by Paulo Szot as the hapless Kovalyov, with Andrey Popov as the menacing Police Inspector and Alexander Lewis as Kovalyov’s peripatetic nose.

Alexander Borodin’s epic Prince Igor has its first Met performances since 1917 in a new production staged by noted Russian opera director Dmitri Tcherniakov in his Met debut. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the lush score, famous for its celebrated “Polovtsian Dances,” and Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title role of a 12th-century Russian hero. The cast also includes Oksana Dyka in her Met debut as Yaroslavna, Igor’s emotionally fragile second wife.

Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play The Habit of Art, with Richard Griffiths and Alex Jennings, returns as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. The National Theatre’s original stage production of War Horse, broadcast live from London’s West End.

Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has become an international smash hit, capturing the imagination of four million people around the world.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. Philosopher Slavoj Zizek and filmmaker Sophie Fiennes use their interpretation of moving pictures to present a compelling cinematic journey into the heart of ideology – the dreams that shape our collective beliefs and practices. Sometimes you simply can’t get to those blockbuster art exhibitions at major galleries around the world, so we’re bringing them to you! This special live event explores the major Vermeer exhibition at The National Gallery in London which focuses on his art in relation to music. Art Historian Tim Marlow goes beyond the exhibition to tell the story of Vermeer’s life and work, including the much-loved painting The Girl with a Pearl Earring.

We’re thrilled to be screening this first ever live cinema broadcast from the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
