INTRODUCTION
This report is the third annual presentation of light extinction data collected at the Experimental Lakes Area using a quantum sensor. As in the previous reports (Shearer, 1976; Shearer &DeClercq, 1976), a brief description of the scope of the measurements is presented, and the complete set of collected data for 1976 is given, both in tables and in graphs.
The equipment and methodology were basically unchanged from that described in the previous reports. The cosine-corrected sensor (Licor 1925) is designed to measure quanta in only the region of the spectrum b:twee~ 400.and ~2D m~ (Biggs et al., 1971). The units recorded are mlcroelnstelns m sec-to
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Twelve separate lake basins were surveyed during the ice-free season of 1976. The light extinction data was collected in conjunction with primary production measurements (DeCl ercq et al., 1977) on these
• basins, some of which were undergoing experimental manipulations (Schindler and Fee, 1974). Locations of the basins (Nos. 223, 224, 226NE, 226SW, 227, 230, 239, 261, 302N, 302S, 303, 304) can be found, along with some morphometric and geographic information, in volume 28(2) of the Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada (1971).
Light extinction was measured in most of the basins at approximately bi-weekly intervals. Oligotrophic basins were occasionally monitored less frequently, while several of the experimental basins were cOl\1l1only done at weekly i ntervals. On a few occasions, extinction profiles were taken two or more times on the same day.
Whenever possible, light readings were taken under clear skyconditions, or under uniform cloud cover. Some profiles were made, under changing skies using a deck cell for reference. The great majority of readings were taken during the morning hours, the times being given in the Appendi ces.
In Appendix I, the light measured at each depth, expressed as a percentage of the surface value, is listed for each profile. Mean extinction coefficients for the profiled depth intervals are also given. The same data are plotted in Appendix II. In both appendices, the data are grouped according to lake basin and listed chronologically within each group.
